Yotimi
07.18.11 | Our top 11 is eerily similar. The Field has grown on me immensely in the last month (went from a 2 to a 4.5) |

07.18.11 | But nice list..19 is on my top 1 for my favorite albums of all time. |
wabbit
07.18.11 | never heard of him I'll check it out.
I prefer the term electronica to electronic as essentially all the music we get is electronic but this genre of music is coming from electronics thus the a is added at the end like in tropicalia. But arguing of genre-tags is super dumb. |
Qualie
07.18.11 | I just think adding the A sounds corny, maybe it's just me. |
Qualie
07.18.11 | O and check out 2562- Fever. Very good Dubstep |

07.18.11 | Menomena? Hmm I haven't heard that specific album but I wouldn't call them "electronica" I guess I need to spin that shit already, I dl'ed it ages ago. Listened to Friend and Foe yesterday, albums slays
And big props for 13, that's probably my favourite electronic album of the limited that I've heard. |
wabbit
07.18.11 | friend or foe is a lot more indie than Monster. they are both so kick ass though.
check out 11 and 15 (esp 15) think you'll really like them. |

07.18.11 | List Titled: Electronica!

07.18.11 | "and I got pummeled for calling James Blake techno?"
Lol, calling Blake techno is pretty stupid
I don't know why people are arguing here, electronica means electronic music so there's nothing wrong here |
Deviant.
07.18.11 | Funny though, for someone who claimed that dubstep needed to be killed with a knife (I think that was how you put it int the thread for one of my dubstep lists) your hand's pretty far up Burial's skirt |

07.18.11 | I obviously didn't mean the whole genre. |

Rabbit - check out The Invisible Insurrection by Desolate and Clubroot (both his self titled and II-MMX) for Burial stuff
Emim - check out Nomad by Head Hunter and both Return II Space & Urban Ethics (2 separate EP's but together form an album) by Digital Mystikz for Pinch stuff |

It is difficult to see what your exact argument is, as essentially you are saying "Electronic music
is a silly descriptor, as all music has electronics involved in its production, but electronica
refers to music with electronic production features"
In the sense that I think you are getting at (ie electronica features electronic instrumentation
along like the likes of synthesizers), the term doesn't define clear boundaries, and interpretation
of whether a song or album falls under the genre can be entirely subjective. For example, does Enter
Shikari fall under electronica then? If the genre becomes too all-encapsulating, as your use of
electronica opens itself up to - then what use is it as a categorizing term? |

07.18.11 | Well, that one Skrillex review for instance
"Song X" is a standard electronica track.... means nothing whatsoever |
Liberi Fatali
07.18.11 | @Baphomet, as Dev said earlier there is no point arguing over use of electronica being used in place of electronic music.
My opposition to the term (and dev agrees with me on this I believe) is that it was bastardized and used as a marketing term during the 90s, so has a tainted history. And is still used by some people in the same sense as it was during the 90s, ie Fatboy Slim, Prodigy and the like are electronica. Using electronica in that sense is likely to give him a nervous tic.
But using it in lieu of electronic music is nothing to grumble about really, though I prefer use of electronic music given that it wasn't bastardized in the past like electronica was. |
wabbit
07.18.11 | oh sorry deivant ya I'll check that out.
@Liberi I see you're point and I agree (like "rock" has become synonymous with almost anything with a guitar) but I just really hate the need to codify art down into sub-sub-genres so I just stick to a wide overarching terms.
and Deviant only doesn't like it when people use it to make them sound like they know what they are talking about...I never pretend to know what I am talking about so I can say it. |
Deviant.
07.18.11 | "and Deviant only doesn't like it when people use it to make them sound like they know what they are talking about...I never pretend to know what I am talking about so I can say it"
Ha, I just think that if people are choosing to review something they don't really know anything about they should do their research
And just to follow on from Liberi, back in the day people (and artists) took offense to the term IDM (Intelligent Dance Music). It was never designed to say everything is "dumb" but as a way to separate from the more "simplified" dance music like house which was always generally a 4x4 beat and some synths. There stuff was always more complex, harder to crack, more thoughtful than out and out "dance" music. So as a result some people decided to re-name (or, re-tag) the term idm as electronica, which is equally as stupid because all that ever implied was it was "electronic music" |
Baphomet
07.18.11 | "Baphomet, as Dev said earlier there is no point arguing over use of electronica being used in place of electronic music. "
Haha, it's ok man I was just teasing Dev.

Liberi Fatali

07.19.11 | Couple of good tracks on 1 (Pyramid Song is my fave Radiohead song). It's my 4th or 5th favourite album of theirs though. Pulk/Pulling Doors reeks imo. It's not the style of it. I'm heaps, like, hip to it and shit. Just the weird vocals and lyrics about doors. I don't find it clever at all.
