ConsiderPhlebas 01.24.11	It's about repression. Culture imposes rules upon us and forbidden desires get repressed. In Freud's theory the Id is the part of us that wants to fuck and kill everything that moves. For Lacan, it's to do with language. When we take our place in the symbolic order (of language and culture) we are removed from 'the real' and are barred from it forever. This lack is where the unconscious is born.
