Hair Raising Moments In Music

those moments that make you press the repeat button rinfinitely. you rknow the kind.
1Isis
So Did We

6:18 - 7:31. Never fails to capture my attention. Eerie haunting notes play
over one of the heaviest riffs ever written. I'd consider this passage to be
post metal's best ever.
2Godspeed You! Black Emperor
East Hastings

8:20 - 11:59. The legendary "The Sad Mafioso" movement. A heartbreaking
string of notes plays over a rhythmic snare, growing in pace until a
thunderous finale. Truly perfection.
3The Antlers
Epilogue

2:53 - 4:14. Peter Silberman is alone, and depressed. His voice shifts up an
octave or twelve for this passage, consisting of nothing more than a man
and his guitar. Stunning performance.
4Misery Signals
The Year Summer Ended In June

3:19 - 4:26. "Well I hope you know I tried to find those pictures Jordo..."
Jesse Zaraska belts out heartfelt pleas to see his friends again, long since
dead from a car crash. Add a mournful guitar lead and pounding drums, and
you've got one of metalcore's best ever passages.
5La Dispute
New Storms For Older Lovers

2:44 - 5:00. The tension has been building all song, and now it's time for
Jordan Dreyer to tell his rival how he really feels. He bitterly describes what
love is, over a chugging and slow-paced riff in the background. Almost
mesmerizing.
6Glassjaw
Two Tabs of Mescaline

2:22 - 3:01. The song seems to almost slow down, despite remaining at the
same pace. It's definitely an interesting experience, and one that is
highlighted by Daryl Palumbo's tortured and maniacal vocals. It also
happens to feature one of my favorite bass passages of all time. Perhaps
Glassjaw's most underrated song.
7Brand New
Limousine

1:50 - 2:50. A pure minute of heart-wrenching disaster. Jesse Lacey's
harsher vocals suddenly appear from where there was only a slight
whisper, and then one of Brand New's most memorable passages ever
takes place. "My beauty supreme, yeah you were right about me. But can I
get myself out from underneath this guilt that will crush me..." As
overwhelmingly praised as this album is, it's for a damn good reason.
8Defeater
A Wound and Scar

2:16 - 2:50. Maybe hardcore's most emotional passage, Defeater give us a
glimpse of just how painful war can be for those who lose loved ones. A
bleak and devastating vocal performance ("No hope, just folded flags")
highlights a simplistic drum fill and a palm muted guitar part compliments
the passage wonderfully. About as close to "pain" as one can come while
listening to music.
9Oceansize
Oscar Acceptance Speech

5:24 - 8:55. The song has ended, and strings play in the background. You
wait for the final note to hit...but it doesn't come. Interested, you sit back
in
awe as one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written fills your
eardrums. This was perhaps the most unexpected part of a song I've ever
heard, particularly for the length in which it takes place. You just won't
want it to end.
10Neutral Milk Hotel
Two-Headed Boy

3:07 - 4:26. Jeff Mangum's raspy and unpolished voice dominates this track
from start to finish. The ending section is when the song starts to get
slower and the instruments fade away, except for Jeff and one acoustic
guitar. This is my personal favorite part of the album, as it just feels so
soulful and stripped down to it's absolute barest point. Brilliance.
