@help ya most of the users like terrible terrible post-hardcore. |
Inveigh
12.21.10 | for 5 have you ever listened to Sole and the Skyrider Band? check out the album by Plastique. also, since you like that and I know you like Aesop Rock, you should check out:
El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead
Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein |
SpottedTrout
12.21.10 | eternium knows whats up |
eternium
12.21.10 | Well, I haven't listened to that much post-punk but what I have listened to of it I didn't enjoy as much as I enjoy what post-hardcore and everything else I have. Four of my 5's are post-metal albums so obviously that's on top. |

12.21.10 | Post punk > post rock > post metal > post hardcore |
couldwinarabbit
12.21.10 | well as long as post-punk is first I'm happy. |
Slipping Away
12.21.10 | I 100% agree with these descriptions and the order. Can't say I care about post-rock or post-metal any more, that shit got old real fast. |
IanDavila
12.21.10 | post-punk, rock and metal are best! can you give me some post-punk essentials? |
McCopper
12.21.10 | ^That Joy division album.
Something by Nick Cave.Pick the one whose artwork you like most/has the highest rating/you listened to a song off and liked it
I like Iggy pop a lot aswell although most people hate many of his albums I recommend American caesar.
The cure - Disintegration |
Athom
12.21.10 | personally i think post-punk mostly sucks but when it's good it's really good |
Zanders
12.21.10 | Actually, let me revise that.
Post punk > post rock > post hardcore > post metal
What people generally call post metal is a little repetitive. |

12.21.10 | k. I'm not a super expert on the genre. I would ask porch more than me.
Lighter stuff-
Talking heads- fear of music
talking heads- remain in light
Interpol- turn on your bright lights
Devo- Q: are we not men A: we are devo
gang of four- Entertainment!
by lighter I am refering to the music being more upbeat. A fairly common theme is post punk is the juxtoposition of upbeat music (major chords lots of snare etc) with really depressing music
darker-
Joy Division- Closer
Joy Divsion- Unknown Pleasures
Wire- Pink Flag
Wipers- Youth of America
the cure- disintegration
Nick cave and the bad seeds- let love in
not post-punk but kinda
The National- Boxer
The National- Alligator
The Smiths- the smiths
the smiths- the queen is dead
Dismemberment Plan- Emergency & I |
couldwinarabbit
12.21.10 | this is mainly based on being easy to get into and is not a list of the best stuff. You would probably want to start with the not but kinda section then the lighter stuff. |
Athom
12.21.10 | the cure/the wipers/wire/dismemberment plan are not post punk in the slightest. christ dude |
Inveigh
12.21.10 | yeah Wipers are pretty much just punk to me |
couldwinarabbit
12.21.10 | the cure and wire are completely. Like behind the talking heads and joy division they would be the prime examples. dismemberment plan is more based on it, thus in the not so post-punk area. the wipers are more probably more punk than post-punk but that album in particular has a lot of post-punk elements. |
Athom
12.21.10 | pink flag is a straight up punk album and as much as you hate to admit it, the cure and the smiths are
new wave 80's brit-pop but just good examples of it. also the dismemberment plan share more in common
with late 80s and early 90s noise rock alternative bands its just done in a much much more pop
friendly sound while keeping the same structures. |
AnotherBrick
12.21.10 | fail |
couldwinarabbit
12.21.10 | the smiths are not post-punk nor is the dismemberment plan and I never said they were.
Pink flag is like 100% quintessential post-punk but genre wars are for people who have poor taste in music and justify it by saying that the shitty band they like is part of a niche genre so w/e. |
porch
12.21.10 | its not as if post punk has a fixed definition so this is a retarded argument
also wire are regarded as a definitive post punk band by lots of people, and not just because of pink flag |
Athom
12.21.10 | well i know no one that listens to post-punk irl and dont congregate on sites that cover it a lot all i can say is from what my ears tell me pink flag is a damn good punk album. but since porch has shown up and he actually listens to a bunch of this stuff i'll just defer to him. |
porch
12.21.10 | i mean i can definitely see why you would call pink flag a straight up punk album, its the later albums where they began to experiment a bit more with their sound that fit more into the post punk vibe
i don't really believe in fitting bands into little genre boxes anyway
|
Pyosisified
12.21.10 | "Like I said last night, if you hate on Isis then you must be musically retarded."
dumbest thing ive read all day |
couldwinarabbit
12.21.10 | ya that whole punk,post-punk,new wave,no wave, hardcore, post-hardcore kind of music is stupidly hard to classify. And then doing it for a whole band is even harder cause like fugazi went from straight up punk to post-hardcore.
But @Zander regardless of whether or not it is post-punk those are all great albums. |
eternium
12.21.10 | And then there's crust punk, power violence, grindcore, emo, d-beat, metalcore, youth crew, screamo, mathcore, etc. |
hellpickle
12.21.10 | That's like comparing completely different genres.. I mean, really. There's a punk scene background and then there's post-rock. |
Bitchfork
12.21.10 | "post-metal. My favourite metal genre, which isn't saying a lot. But it is less stupid and overdramatic then most metal and it's album art doesn't look like an 80's pinball machine"
that was just dumb. |
Mewcopa0
12.22.10 | sputnik is still the only site that ive heard the term "post-metal" |
couldwinarabbit
12.22.10 | And then there's crust punk, power violence, grindcore, emo, d-beat, metalcore, youth crew, screamo, mathcore, etc.
emo and power violence are not similar at all.
Emo and screamo are an offspring of post-hardcore. |
ShadowRemains

ShadowRemains
12.22.10 | also, don't make a genre list if you have to make things up to fill it (just don't make them at all would be the preference) |
couldwinarabbit
12.22.10 | ok metallica MoP is the best metal album ever. Don't argue cause you are wrong and people far smarter with better taste than you agree with me. You can say some stupid band from sweden is your favourite and that is cool but MoP is the best. And even it has stupid album art. Just look at Iron Maiden's discography. |
ShadowRemains
