Songs About Addiction

Extremely bored, and since I don't start back at work until the 27th, I'm going to assault the Sputnik site with lists. If you don't like it, too bad. List is the 10 best songs about addiction, ranked.
10The Guess Who
Hang On to Your Life

It tells of the knowledge an addict has, the knowledge that you are hurting everyone you love, but you just can't stop no matter what. You'll leave everything behind just to get that one true fix.
9Depeche Mode
Clean

The trials and tribulations of giving up your one true love in life, despite how much that one true love will hurt you in the end. Drugs are like a scorned lover that continue to play with you, lead you to a false sense of security, and then slam you back to the ground with a loud thud.
8K's Choice
Not an Addict

The story of denial that an addict goes through, where the question of "Why?" is answered with "Why not?" Don't take literally, because answering a the question of "Why?" with "Why not?" will one day get you killed.
7A Perfect Circle
Gravity

The lyrics almost tell a story of the instant gratification that is the result of a foreign substance, but if you look a bit closer it tells the story of an addict who has lost touch with all reality.
6Third Eye Blind
God of Wine

The story of my life. The futility of drug addiction/alcoholism, as seen through the eyes of the desperate addict. Whenever an addict/alcoholic hits rock bottom, they go searching for a way out, most of the times looking to loved ones, and this portrays the horror and the never-ending cycle perfectly.
5The Velvet Underground
Heroin

While the lyrics portray the false sense of security that the drug gives someone, it also shows a delusional, sordid way of thinking that can either horrify someone or entice someone onto the wrong side of the "tracks."
4Deftones
Knife Prty

While some will say this song is open to many interpretations, I disagree. The euphemisms used for the needle are abound in Chino's lyrics, as it details the account of one dying next to their loved one in a "shooting gallery." Beautiful, but disturbing and haunting at the same time.
3Pink Floyd
Comfortably Numb

While the music itself is the real highlight, no one can deny the impact the lyrics may have on a drug addict. The feeling of being lost and in a haze is perfectly described.
2Neil Young
The Needle and the Damage Done

Besides being referenced in numerous other songs(most notably Thursday's "Understanding in a Car Crash"), this is probably the most note-worthy account of the struggles of watching a friend or yourself wither away as the result of heroin use.
1Alice in Chains
Nutshell

This one's pretty obvious. Song has a beautiful, haunting melody to it, and you can hear the pain in Layne's voice. The lyrics don't falter at all, neither, as they paint a portrait of the horror that is drug dependency.
