My Favorite Lyricists

fuck bitches; get money
1Bob Dylan
Blood on the Tracks

Even though Dylan hasn't applied himself as a songwriter or lyricist for over
thirty years (time out of mind was ok i guess...) this Minnesota jew by way
of New York is the gold standard for lyrical quality.
2The Mountain Goats
Nothing for Juice

John Darnielle is more a wordsmith than a musician. His prose takes center
stage behind usually minimalist chords but they burn brighter alone, front
and center, than veiled behind a mist of instrumentation; naked and unobstructed for all to see.
3The National
Boxer

Matt Berninger's words cut with the precision of a surgical scalpel, pinpoint
and direct, stabbing at the most affected areas of the soul. Making his lyrics
even more immediate, his somewhat detached vocal style chimes like
church bells off in the distance, offering a makeshift salvation for those
searching for sanctuary.
4The Hold Steady
Stay Positive

Craig Finn is the American nerd Jesus Christ.
5Frank Turner
Love, Ire & Song

Punk aesthetics and acoustic guitars are nothing new, especially in this
post-Hot Water Music world, but when Frank speaks he demands your
attention. He is a lighthouse of positivism, directing the jaded and the
damned through the fog of every day life.
6Death Cab for Cutie
Transatlanticism

So what if every girl you knew in high school loved Death Cab. So what if
Ben Gibbard's tongue only spews sappy, overwrought emotional baggage.
He does it damn good. Too damn good.
