I have. I used to love it, but the drumming is extremely overrated. Just because you use double bass extensively doesn't necessarily make it a good drum track. He was decent but not that great |
AngelofDeath
09.21.10 | Pretty good list. Needs None so Vile, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, and Hellfire. |
Spec
09.21.10 | @East Hastings
If I was all about the double bass pedal there would be a shit load of Slipknot on the list.
The drumming on City Of Evil is great because Jimmy was able to bring a lot of technicality to their slightly dull rock sound. He didn't have a lot to work with yet somehow made the drums standout.
I don't mean songs like Beast And The Harlot, songs like Blinded in Chains if you listen closely, you hear incredible rhythmic patterns along with the double bass pedal. |
VicariousIntent
09.21.10 | I disagree hastings. I don't think Rev was necessarily a fantastic drummer, but City of Evil was definitely his best work. The way he used double bass in his fills was actually pretty smart. The guy had chops, but his ideas were pretty smart as well.
This is coming from someone who doesn't like A7X much at all, but I thought Rev was the best part of that band. |
East Hastings
09.22.10 | Ehh idk. I thought the drumming on City of Evil was showy, but in the way that didn't actually sound good. I thought his drumming on Waking the Fallen was a bit more restrained but offered more to the music than his own show of talent. And I know what you guys mean about the double bass fills in some of the songs on CoE, but that's basically all they were. He didn't incorporate much else into the overall sound |

But yet you have Lars Ulrich and The Rev... |
Spec
09.22.10 | Keith Moon was no doubt a tremendous drummer but I didn't think he could top the list. I'v found a lot of his fills to be a little bit unnecessary to be honest. The drummers job is still to be the backbone of the band, not to always try to be in the spotlight. I think a truly great drummer is able to exercise his skills and technicality, while not overshadowing the rest of the band.
You'll hate me for it but Jimmy Sullivan on City Of Evil is a very good example of that. |
Spec
09.22.10 | See what I mean?
I'm not a fan of metallica or Lars Ulrich myself but think about all the modern drummers that were influenced by his drumming and his band.

04.12.20 | I really like your list. Indeed, I liked it so much, I'm going to create an amazon playlist with all these records/albums. I suspect I'm a bit older than the target audience (51 in 2020). But, I've been cranking tunes and playing in bands for 40 years now, on and off. I went to music school (though I'm a lawyer now)--I think people arguing over what should or should not be on the list are largely missing the point. This is a great way to discovery drummer talent. I don't know every band mentioned. Despite massive cd and record collections, and years of listening, I've only heard about 60% of your list. That gives me a lead on 20 records that you think are terrific (and that others seem to agree are terrific).
I've got a few recommendations for you:
* Burning Airlines, Identikit. One of the most underrated records and drummers of all times. (the other record is terrific too).
* Poundcake, Aloha Via Satellites;
* Van Halen, VH I (or the 1984 hot for teacher stuff is pretty good too);
* James Brown, Live at the Appollo - incredible grooves from that drummer (clyde stubbens maybe?);
I think you're motivating me to make my own list of what I think every drummer should listen to/try before they die. I assume it's about 50-100 records in total.
