1. i think young people be-little the importance of visual storytelling (which is ironic considering the state of affairs a decade ago)
2. passable action + romantic cliches interwoven with a science fiction epic? A pseudo-anthropological narrative as a backdrop is a pretty interesting way to frame the story. The thing is, people don't always need 5 layers of originality. If a formula works for women over the age of 40, then why is mixing that formula with another formula that works for males under the age of 18 such a shit idea? Apparently, it worked... |

Those old films were utterly based around physicality; telling stories through movement, lighting and imagery, whereas Avatar just pointed things out of the screen while all the actors told each other the plot every few minutes. In regards to Avatar, it was pretty obvious to guess that the movie was never going to be anything more than just a great visual spectacle, and not the savior of cinema that some people had it pegged as. And it succeeded at being a visual treat, and just being a fun but dumb movie. At the end of the day Cameron really is nothing more than a glorified action director, he's just always been smart enough to pile on enough exposition and set up so we care. He just dumbed it down considerably for Avatar |

Prestige would've definitely had more word of mouth hype, I mean he had just come off successfully reviving the batman movies. I mean sure, when Insomnia was out it was known as "the movie from the guy who directed Memento" but from memory, Memento wasn't that well known upon release and in the immediate years following. Its picked up a huge cult following only in the last 5 years or so, even though it got massive acclaim upon release. Well, in my part of the world anyway |
