08.08.10 | Meant to have Mastodon-Leviathan in there too, ran out of room.
Oh and also BTBAM and Opeth, I suck at counting.
As you can see I mostly pick up what gets a lot of attention on here, but I need more.
I'd prefer metal that's not metalcore, black metal, or post-metal as much, but that's fine too. Rec away sputnik, thanks in advance. |

08.08.10 | The easiest way to get into metal would be listening to lots of Opeth and Melodic Death Metal. So for entry level melo-death I'd suggest Amon Amarth, Dark Tranquillity, At the Gates and Children of Bodom. Listen to everything AliW said in combination with these and you should have a good idea of what you do and don't like. I'd also add Pig Destroyer-Terrifyer (Grind) to his list. |

08.08.10 | Also judging by your list your off to a great start but you shouldn't give up on post-metal so easily you'll be missing out...a lot |

08.08.10 | You guys are all awesome, can't thank you enough. |

08.08.10 | salival I'm not giving up on post-metal, I just don't think post-metal will help me get into other metal that I don't like.
For example the song In Fiction off Panopticon is one of my favorite songs ever, but if it didn't have the vocals it could easily be considered just post-rock, and I think because of how much I like post-rock I would like post-metal a lot too.
But I want to get into some other metal for now and then when I listen to post-metal I'll enjoy it that much more. I've been meaning to pick up Precambrain and a Cult of Luna or Neurosis album for awhile now. |
iscarabaid
08.08.10 | I'm like you; I can't get into much metal.
Between the Buried and Me - Colors (I'm sure you've at least heard of this one)
Isis - Oceanic (in my opinion much much better than Panopticon)
The Ocean - Precambrian (amazing post-metal with a slight hardcore bent particularly on the first disc, and the second is more post-rock, so this album you might really like) |
iscarabaid
08.08.10 | oops, didn't read your comment, ignore the BTBAM recommendation lol. |
iscarabaid
08.08.10 | double oops didn't read your comment on Precambrian either o_o I personally don't think you should force yourself to like the metal genre unless you really want to...I myself can never get into krautrock no matter how much I want to...and I don't really have an interest in getting into metal that's not post-, and I don't think that makes me any less of a person. |
TMobotron
08.08.10 | @iscarabaid yeah in my first comment I mention I meant to put BTBAM on there, I love Colors. And yeah I think I'm gonna get Precambrian tonight actually, I've been putting it off for way too long.
So right now I'm gonna pick up
The Ocean-Precambrian
Death-Human
Atheist-Unquestionable Presence
Ulcerate-Everything is Fire
Amon Amarth-With Oden On Our Side
Blackguard-Profugus Mortis
I'll come back to a lot of what I missed here. I can't believe how much stuff I've heard that wasn't on the list. I really just made the list based on what I liked the most, and what I wanted the recs to be similar to. What I've heard that's not on my list:
Pelican
Megadeth
SOAD
Dream Theater
Poison the Well
NIN
Iron Maiden
Ulver (how could I forget that I fucking love this album)
Katatonia
Porcupine Tree
Karnivool
Cryptopsy
Rosetta
Botch
HORSE The Band
Animals as Leaders
So yeah, I missed a fucking lot. Although some of that I just didn't think of as metal (Pelican, Karnivool, Porcupine Tree, NIN, Dream Theater), some of it I didn't like (Cryptopsy, Megadeth) and some I liked but didn't want similar recs (Animals as Leaders, SOAD). |

08.08.10 | iscarabaid I know what you're saying, but that's how I was about all music for awhile. I didn't like screamo for the longest time, then CTTS clicked one day and now it's one of my favorite genres. I just love discovering new music and getting into a new genre makes everything so much more interesting and exciting.
If you posted on here with a rec and I didn't say I was gonna pick it up right now don't worry I'll listen to a lot of these as soon as possible. If you think I missed something that I need to get right now let me know and I'll consider changing my mind. |
salival13
08.08.10 | ^you should probably youtube an Ulcerate song before you commit especially if you're buying, that's pretty veteran fucking metal right there that I don't think you'd like at all presently (not to be elitist it's just a very dense and hard to get into record). Maybe try Dismember-Like an Everflowing Stream, that's a classic right there. |
TMobotron
08.08.10 | ^Hmm, I really enjoy a challenge with music, I'll give it a shot at least.
No I'm not buying, I download stuff and then buy what I like. I have a huge collection of CDs and records but it's all stuff I downloaded first. And I go to as many concerts as I can and buy shirts or some kind of merch whenever I go (I have waaaaaaay too many band shirts but love them all).
Not that I feel the need to defend myself but I just want to prevent a music morals debate from starting.
Thanks for all the help salival. I always wanted to listen to Amon Amarth do you think With Oden On Our Side is the right choice? |
salival13
08.08.10 | Yeah that would be my recommendation, I can't see you not enjoying it unlike some of their other records. Twilight of the thunder gods and Versus the world are also awesome. |
TMobotron
08.09.10 | Baphomet I'm listening to Blackguard right now and I am fucking blown away by these synths. They're some of the coolest folky synths I've ever heard, and even though they're always present-something which might seem gimmicky-it stays cool the whole time because they're always accomplishing something different.
One second they'll take the forefront as a nice folk melody, next they'll have an orchestral sound over heavy guitar strumming, next the synths are building on top of a metal riff, god damn they're cool.
I also like that there are multiple vocal stylings on the album. Sometimes with metal I get so tired of cookie monster by the time it's over, but they're keeping it real fresh with the 2 vocalists. |
FadeToBlack
08.09.10 | neurosis |
TMobotron
08.09.10 | Also i listened to some of that Human album by Death (I didn't try to get into the whole album, just wanted to get an idea of the sound), and it sounds so empty. Empty as in it feels like there's a lot more room for other instruments/sounds in it. I wish I had a better way of describing it.
It's not gonna turn me off of from the album, but I'm really curious, what causes that? I know it's from 1991 and the production wasn't the same, but what production techniques are employed to make an album like Blackwater Park sound like it's making full use of your speakers? Christ I hope this made any sense. |
FadeToBlack
08.09.10 | idk maybe because human was recorded in 1991 and blackwater park was recorded in 2001...? |
punanipery
08.09.10 | i know a lot of metal, but i won't rec you anything because metal sucks. |
TMobotron
08.09.10 | FadeToBlack yeah I know albums couldn't be produced the same back then, or at least quality production wasn't as readily available, but what I'm asking is what aspects of production are different between the two albums that would make it sound like that? What year the album was recorded wouldn't matter if it used the exact same production. |
Dryden
08.09.10 | metal is too good for that kid |
zarquan99
08.09.10 | props for 6 even though its barely metal. TAAB ftw. anyways I just listened to Kvelertak's new (and only) album and it kicked major ass. People are describing it as "black n' roll" so its not pure metal like your asking but its just kick ass.
|
zarquan99
08.09.10 | oh! You should also listen to Death's last 4 albums. Especially Symbolic imo. Really accessible and some of the best death metal there is. some more recs:
Shining: V - Halmstad (black)
Shining: VI - Klagopsalmer (black)
Discordance Axis: The Inalienable Dreamless (grind but i'd call it metal anyway)
In Flames: Whoracle (melodeath)
In Flames: Colony (melodeath)
The Black Dahlia Murder: Nocturnal (more accessible death metal but also really good)
In Flames - The Jester Race (melodeath)
Enslaved - Isa (black metal sorry, but its really good)
The Red Chord - Fused Together in Revolving Doors (Death/Grind/Hardcore)
At the Gates: Slaughter of the Soul (melodeath) |
TMobotron
08.09.10 | I seriously just picked up Kvelertak, yeahtoast on here posted a yt of one of their songs and it was fucking awesome. About to listen, pretty excited. I picked up Human by Death too, I think I'll just go forward from there if I like it. You have a favorite from what you listed? |
BigTuna
08.09.10 | Liquorworks - Nonsense (instrumental)
|
salival13
08.10.10 | Some released versions of Human do have that somewhat hollowed out production I have to listen to it at full volume for it be effective actually, try and find a remastered version. Symbolic sounds much better imo.
You really don't need three In Flames albums they're all pretty similar/consistent but I'd second Slaughter of the Soul out of zarquan's. They're good rec's but you've got way better melo-death and other essentials in these comments to listen to tbh. |
FadeToBlack
08.10.10 | there is no remaster. to be blunt, if 'bad' production bothers you dont bother listening to metal. |
TMobotron
08.10.10 | As I already said (with poor grammar I might add, but you get the point): "It's not gonna turn me off of from the album". And there's plenty of metal with good production so take that elitism elsewhere. |
FadeToBlack
08.10.10 | lol |
TMobotron
08.10.10 | Do you disagree? I don't want to sound like a dick but I feel like you could get pretty damn deep into metal even if you avoid metal with poor production.
It really doesn't bother me either way though, albums with that kind of production rule sometimes. I mean shit 2 is on here, and I'm a pretty big fan of Filosofem as well (which BTW recently jumped from a 4 to a 4.1). |
salival13
08.10.10 | Rate your music shows a 2008 [Remastered] release and it does sound better. Nobody said the production bothered us it's more like missed opportunity to make an already awesome album even better |
