| Pandora Vs. Last.fm: Agalloch
It's battle of the music streaming services! On one side we have Pandora, the popular service that's free with limitations, and bases its music recommendations on a database of song attributes known as the Music Genome Project. On the other, Last.fm, the older, free-er system that utilizes a human-powered social ranking method to recommend tracks. Which will provide better results for an Agalloch station? You decide. | 1 | | Pandora's 10 Picks | 2 | | Erik Wollo Guitar Nova
Interesting first pick from this Norwegian composer/guitarist, but Pandora must be doing something right, as an Agalloch fan I enjoyed this and gave it a thumbs up. | 3 | | Amorphis Eclipse
Not really seeing it... Amorphis has a much less BM/Folk sound, particularly on Eclipse which features a dose of middle-eastern influences you'd never hear on an Agalloch album. | 4 | | Hammerfall Masterpieces
Couldn't find this album on SM, maybe it's a compilation. The track wasn't too terrible, but not exactly reminiscent of Agalloch either. | 5 | | Opeth Still Life
Pandora makes an unhealthy habit of saturating my Agalloch station with Opeth. I love both bands, but they have very little in common if you ask me. | 6 | | Daylight Dies Dismantling Devotion
Another popular pairing from Pandora... I'm a fan of Daylight Dies and would more or less consider the recommendation to be valid given the overall atmosphere of certain tracks. | 7 | | Mourning Beloveth A Disease For The Ages
Didn't really care for this one. | 8 | | Dissection Storm Of The Light's Bane
Enjoyed it, thumbed it up, I think at this point I stopped paying attention to how similar the bands were and just considered whether or not the band sucked. | 9 | | Flametal The Elder
Pretty much some of the most badass, well, flamenco-metal out there, I can dig. | 10 | | Novembers Doom The Novella Reservoir
Never got into this band. Should I? | 11 | | Spokane Able Bodies
Hmmm... | 12 | | Last FM's Picks | 13 | | In The Woods... Strange In Stereo
They could have recommended a better album, but okay. | 14 | | Wyrd Huldrafolk
Meh | 15 | | Swallow The Sun New Moon
Meh | 16 | | Novembers Doom The Pale Haunt Departure
It's 4 degrees of separation! | 17 | | Novembre Classica
Love this album, but similar to Agalloch? Not quite. | 18 | | Daylight Dies Dismantling Devotion
Both services recommended this album within 10 skips. | 19 | | Ulver Perdition City
Agalloch, similar to 99% of music out there, has very little in common with Ulver. | 20 | | Ahab Call Of The Wretched Sea
Hmm... | 21 | | Negura Bunget Om
Sure, why not. | 22 | | Uaral Lamentos A Poema Muerto
I thought I had struck gold until cookie monster started mournfully croaking out vocals. What a shame, the music is glorious. | |

06.06.10 | Tried to separate the 10 picks with #1 and #12, but it looks kinda silly. Oh well. | Zion
06.06.10 | In the end, I think I preferred Pandora's selection, though not to an extreme degree. | megadeth101
06.06.10 | pandora is meh | Counterfeit
06.07.10 | last.fm cause i can integrate wif my sputniks. | Zion
06.07.10 | I use it because I have a Blackberry, and last.fm is only kinda-sorta not really supported. | Foxhound
06.07.10 | last.fm fur shur. | Maniac!
06.07.10 | this comment isnt exactly what you asked for...but ....
I prefer last.fm as a whole. I used pandora for a a year, thenused slacker radio. after i found last.fm, i never went back. for what i listen to the radios are perfect, and the unlimited skips are awesome. the added ability to connect with people with similar tastes makes it that much better imo.
anyway, just posting my opinion on the two, though that wasnt what you were asking ;) | Zion
06.07.10 | Muzik- I have used last.fm since forever, but decided to check out Pandora because I'm a geek and the idea of a Music Genome Project sounded right up my alley. I find the concept fascinating, but in the long run I think I still prefer last.fm. No skip limits, feels like a larger database of music, too. Not sure if that's a fact, but on Pandora I find myself groaning every time the same freakin Opeth track pops up. | Maniac!
06.07.10 | last.fm has a wider variety, and since the people tag it I believe that it is more accurate. with the genome it doesnt always work out. after reading the 'why we played this' it seemed like complete bogus. It is a great idea, but it needs a lot of work. | R6Rider
06.07.10 | I actually read every description.
Cool list. | Zoo
06.07.10 | Based on this selection, Last.fm clearly is more accurate. I've never used Pandora, but I've always been satisfied enough with Last.fm to never have a reason to use something else. | ninjuice
06.07.10 | How to Train Your Dragon ftw. Saw that twice and paid for 3D both times. | Dryden
06.09.10 | last.fm is the best | laughriot
09.26.11 | In the Woods is the most similar band to Agalloch that I've heard, except for the singing, which sounds like Life of Agony. | CptMcMilligan
03.15.12 | I'm a huge Agalloch fan and I know of a couple bands that are similar to them. Most notably Gallowbraid, and This White Mountain (who obviously take their name directly from Agalloch haha). | LunaticSoul
01.28.13 | OM is a go-to album if you have love for black metal with a lot of atmosphere. | foxxxythnksustnk
01.28.13 | 'Agalloch, similar to 99% of music out there, has very little in common with Ulver.'
lol | Aftertheascension
08.21.14 | Never tried out last fm personally pandora works great for post hardcore and classic rock. that's about it. | BMDrummer
08.21.14 | last.fm documents your music listening more than it allows you to stream | TheGreatQ
08.21.14 | I've never had a good experience with Pandora | BMDrummer
08.21.14 | they generally didn't play interesting stuff for me, plus i'd rather just jam a whole album by a band i want to check out | Aftertheascension
08.22.14 | The problem with pandora is that they keep playing the same bands all the time. They play Eyes Set To Kill a ton for post-hardcore, and Breaking Benjamin a ton if I choose the Heavy Metal option.
i'd rather just jam a whole album by a band i want to check out[2] |
