Surprise!

This list contains the five albums so far this year that have been shockingly good. I'd like to hear all of yours, as well. Hit me up, my nigga.
5As I Lay Dying
The Powerless Rise

What I thought was going to be another generic album from a very generic band turned out to be a very enjoyable listen. The vocals and songwriting have improved, while the music itself can be either beautiful and sweep you off of your feet or pummel you into next week. A great listen. 4/5.
4Fear Factory
Mechanize

With all the legal problems they've faced, the newly reformed friendship of Dino and Burton, and new band members, Fear Factory have released their best album since Demanufacture. A sonic assault on the ears, this album might not be groundbreaking nor original, but still seems to please. 4/5
3Deftones
Diamond Eyes

I understand it's really not that much of a shocker that the Deftones have released another solid album. That's not my point here. My point is that the Deftones, despite in-band controversy as well as the unfortunate medical condition of Chi, have once again changed how I have looked at and perceived music. I believe that the majority of my peers feel the same. 4.5/5
2Rosetta
A Determinism of Morality

I'm was formerly not a fan of post-metal, post-rock, or post-anything for that matter, but this release has opened my mind to bands such as Isis and the Ocean, as well to Rosetta's previous releases. It's an amazing multi-layered piece of art. 5/5
1The National
High Violet

As my tastes in music have indeed expanded, I've started to delve into the indie scene, and this is by far the best release I've found in the genre of late. The subtle but honest vocals of Matt Berninger combined with the bands beautiful arrangements were what drove me to them. 5/5.
