04.14.10 | Very few of the bands rec'd here describe themselves as emo. Saetia make it pretty clear in their liner notes that they're a hardcore band through and through. Pg.99 call themselves punk, although hardcore punk seems more accurate. Some of these bands have even made it clear that they despise the terms emo and screamo.
Porchular is right in a way, as Rites of Spring were one of the first bands to garner the term, but I think they tried to shed the tag.
Emo is Texas is the Reason, American Football, Cap n Jazz etc.
Screamo is a retarded term. |
ConsciousLife
04.15.10 | Ian Mackaye (in his Embrace days) on 'emo'.

04.15.10 | Pianos Become the Teeth - Old Pride
Joshua Fit For Battle - To Bring Our Own End
Touche Amore - ...To the Beat of a Dead Horse
Slightly got the rest haha.
And Conscious, emo is definitely the wrong term for most of theses, since modern screamo is so far removed from the roots of emo, but I don't think there is a better term than screamo, unless you want to go with "emotional hardcore," which seems pretty cyclical. |
SrightryEpic
04.15.10 | I think of Texas Is The Reason, Cap'n Jazz etc. as more indie/emo or Midwest emo or whatever you want to call it.
Then Rites of Spring, Shotmaker, Maximillian Colby etc. as emo.
And Saetia, Pg.99, Orchid etc. as screamo, regardless of what they choose to call themselves they still have that 'screamo' sound - it's like if I were to form a post-hardcore band and call myself screamo, it doesn't actually make it screamo. Besides screamo is still a better term than 'skramz'. |
ConsciousLife
04.15.10 | I just think that punk, punk rock, hardcore and metalcore cover all the bases perfectly well; mainly because a lot of bands who get called emo/screamo are so opposed to the terms. It seems...disrespectful, to describe someone's work in a way they hate, especially when it's so unnecessary. |
SrightryEpic
04.15.10 | Haha, I remember Love Lost But Not Forgotten getting super pissed about being called screamo. And I guess you have a point, but I mean it's not unecessary - otherwise there'd be no point in music genres to begin with and everything would simply be labelled 'music'. If someone's looking for a band that sounds like 'emo' or 'screamo' they don't want to have to wade through a bunch of punk or hardcore/metalcore bands. |
ConsciousLife
04.15.10 | I don't understand how Texas is the Reason and Saetia can usefully share the same term.
Saetia were a hardcore band and were proud of that fact. Their music is hardcore punk. Yes, they're a world away from Sick of it All, but Tool are a world away from Iron Maiden, and their still metal bands.
|
sniper
04.15.10 | It's not unnecessary though. These bands fall under a different category than other hardcore bands, and there is a noticeable difference in sound between bands like Envy and and a more traditional hardcore sound. We need a way to group them. Otherwise, people couldn't ask for recs of bands that sound similar, like this guy is doing. It would be counterproductive to go back to less specific terms like hardcore punk. |
SrightryEpic
04.15.10 | Well like I said, I describe Texas Is The Reason as more indie/emo or midwest emo and Saetia as screamo, so there's no mixup there. As far as Tool and Iron Maiden, well there's all this NWOBHM bullshit and progressive metal or rock or whatever you want to call it. You're right that screamo isn't far removed from hardcore though. |
sniper
04.15.10 | Idk, I hate my explanation, but I feel like now that we have the term it would be a step backwards to uncategorize the bands. |
ConsciousLife
04.15.10 | No it isn't. Overclassification is unhelpful and causes more confusion that anything. If people are actively looking for a specific type of hardcore then there are a world of people sites etc to talk to/visit. Genres exist, but obsessively seperating them into meaningless subgenres is fucking dumb.
Emo, in England at least, currently covers My Chemical Romance, Circle Takes The Square, a load of Deep Elm stuff, Texas is the Reason...
|
SrightryEpic
04.15.10 | Well people are stupid. I'm kind of curious how emo came to describe this lame pop-punky stuff however. How did that come about? |
ConsciousLife
04.15.10 | well...
Texas is > Jimmy Eat World > a few more bands > My Chemical Romance
genres bleed into one another after time, because they're so unwieldy and ill-defined |
ConsciousLife
04.15.10 | tbh I'm just old and bitter and set in my ways.
rec me some screamo and emo...
not skramz, though (which I still don't understand??) |
sniper
04.15.10 | Skramz = screamo. But i hate that term, just a way to separate true screamo from what most of the MTV kids think screamo is. |
ConsciousLife
04.15.10 | ah, I see |
sniper
04.15.10 | I still don't have a problem with the term screamo, by the way, but that's just because I find it helpful to find bands I like. |
ConsciousLife
04.15.10 | yeah, my last-but-one comment was serious man. Kinda accepted that you're right, and by kinda I mean I have. |
