Battle Of The Bands [Semi-Final 2]

Semi-final 2. Whew. That was last one got over 235 comments, with many people switching their votes. This made it very hard to count the votes correctly... in future, if you want to switch your vote, please tell me who you're switching from and too. This next round may be the most hotly contested yet... good luck choosing one. Here we go... The rules: - Each round there will be three bands - The band who receives the most votes (via comments) moves on to the next round. - Each round lasts 24 hours. - Only one vote each round per member. - There were preliminary rounds, these are quarter-finals, and next are the semi-finals, and finally the finals - In the event of a tie, a faceoff will occur between the disputed albums. - The final two will be an EPIC SHOWDOWN! So, let's get started: NOTE: The 'average sputnik rating' I get by adding all of the bands album ratings together and averaging them out.
1Radiohead

ROUND 10 WINNER -- Latest album: Right Place Right Time DVD / Average Sputnik rating: 3.73 / Radiohead is a British band with a very... ahem... 'different' sound. Actually, they have no true definable sound, as it changes from album to album. This is part of the allure of Radiohead - what the Hell are they gonna do next? Their first taste of success was from MTV's promotion of their single "Creep" off of their Pop/Rock debut album, Pablo Honey, and Radiohead initially went for a sound that drew inspiration from U2, 80's rock, and the new music of the 90's. Their second album, The Bends, met with huge acclaim and success, and defined a solid guitar rock sound for the band. It also moved away from much of the sound of the prior album. Their third release, OK Computer, caught everyone off guard - an epic alternative album, loaded with rollicking emotion, incredible instrumentation, with heaps of texture and dynamic as well as some electronica and trip-hop influences. For their next trick, they would explore these influences, mostly electronica and a kind of "Intelligent Techno", surprising everyone who was sure that this band had "no surprises" left. Their next albums were not guitar oriented albums at all, and sounded like nothing the band had ever produced before.
2Pink Floyd

ROUND 14 WINNER -- Latest album: Pulse DVD / Average Sputnik rating: 3.71 / Pink Floyd can safely be tagged as one of the most successful bands of all time, and even now, some forty years after their debut, they are still loved the world over. They were one of the most important and influentual British progressive rock acts of the seventies (along with Genesis and Yes), and were instrumental in defining the "Space Rock" subgenre of the progressive movement. Worldwide album sales are estimated between 175 and 200 million.
3Opeth

ROUND 18 (WILD CARD ROUND) WINNER -- Round 5, 2nd Place - Latest album: Burden / Average Sputnik score: 3.65 / Ask any metal fan in the world and they'll tell you there's no band quite like Opeth. Since 1990, Opeth (Stockholm, Sweden) has been writing some of the most unique and extreme progressive metal ever created. With roots spanning from death metal to jazz and 70's progressive, Opeth is an extreme act like no other. Mikael Akerfeldt's voice shifts between the most soothing clean singing ever heard and the most menacing death metal growls this side of the threshold of hell. With him and Peter Lindgren making up the guitar arsenal, their riffs flow with atmosphere as well as a beautiful acoustic side and blues-influenced metal solos. The rhythm section is near perfect with Mendez and Axenrot providing the clean, subtle basslines and jazz/Latin-influenced drums. Despite the unusual influences for a band such as this, Opeth blends their distinct influences into an undeniably progressive metal sound.
