| Masochist's Favorite Album Discoveries Of 2009
2009 was a very good year for me musically. Lots of good albums released; lots of good albums discovered. This list, then, would be the best of all the albums I discovered last year that were NOT released last year. In order by favorite; first one's first. | 1 | | Porcupine Tree In Absentia
I got into 'Fear of a Blank Planet' first, but this was the album that got me into Porcupine Tree. Before last year, I had no PT albums; now I have five, and a new-found love of modern Progressive Rock. Thanks, Stephen Wilson! Favorite tracks: "Blackest Eyes," "Trains," "The Sound of Muzak," "Gravity Eyelids" | 2 | | Sigur Ros ( )
Pure beauty. Favorite tracks: "Untitled 1," "Untitled 3," "Untitled 8"...ooooh, that "Untitled 8!" | 3 | | Dredg El Cielo
This probably ties for #2. Sputnik psyched me up for this--I didn't even listen to it until I thought I could properly receive it because I wanted it to be an experience. Now I'm a Dredg fan ;-). Favorite tracks: "Same Ol' Road," "Sanzen," "Covalescent," "Whoa Is Me," "The Canyon Behind Her" | 4 | | Common Be
Mmmm...this, along with Mos Def's 'Black On Both Sides', really helped usher in a bit of a hip-hop discovery with me. I got a lot of good stuff out of it, but those two albums top the list. Favorite tracks: "Go!," "Testify," "Chi-City," "The Food," "Real People" | 5 | | Mute Math Mute Math
"Typical" has been in my library for long, long time, but it was only last year that I finally got the entire album. Simply put, just solid, feel-good rock. Favorite tracks: "Typical," "Chaos," "Stare at the Sun," "Break The Same," "Control" | 6 | | Mos Def Black On Both Sides
This album got me through some of the darker days of 2009...I'd drift away and spin this, then feel better. Doesn't hurt that it's really good rap, either ;-). Favorite tracks: "Love," "Speed Law," "Got," "Umi Says," "May-December" | 7 | | Dredg Catch Without Arms
This album works in the exact opposite way that 'El Cielo' does. I love it nearly as much; it definitely has one of my favorite (if not THE favorite) songs by the band in "Ode To The Sun," and it's ridiculously fun to drive to ;-). Favorite tracks: "Ode To The Sun," "Bug Eyes," "Catch Without Arms," "Sang Real," "Spitshine" | 8 | | Sleep Parade Things Can Always Change
This album's position is probably a direct result of my interest in Porcupine Tree, but it doesn't make it any less of an amazing album. Just thought it might be interesting to point out that 6 of the top 10 are either Progressive or have Progressive influences (yes, I'm including Mute Math in that). Favorite tracks: "Carry On," "Everyday," "Passengers," "Open Up," "Weeping Walls" | 9 | | Johnny Cash At San Quentin
Out of 350 ratings so far, this album is one of only five that have gotten full marks. 'Nuff said...(though to be honest, I've considered it for Sigur Ros). Favorite tracks: "I Don't Know Where I'm Bound," "Starksville City Jail," "San Quentin," "A Boy Named Sue" | 10 | | Cynic Traced In Air
When I don't know what to listen to, I listen to this. I just wish it were longer! Favorite tracks: "The Space For This," "Evolutionary Sleeper," "Integral Birth," "Adam's Murmur" | 11 | | Porcupine Tree Fear of a Blank Planet
The first modern Progressive album I paid attention to, and the one that got me interested in the genre in the first place. Favorite tracks: "Fear of a Blank Planet," Anesthetize," "Way Out Of Here," "Sleep Together" | 12 | | A Tribe Called Quest Midnight Marauders
Every time I hear this, it makes me think of how far hip-hop has fallen since these days. It's nowhere near as complex or emotional as it used to be...at least, not the mainstream stuff, anyways. I just wish more people nowadays would be willing to get into it. Favorite tracks: "Award Tour," "Electric Relaxation," "Clap Your Hands," "Oh My God" | 13 | | In Flames Colony
Right, enough with the deions, yeah? Just favorite tracks, then: "Embody The Invisible," "Ordinary Story," "Scorn," "Colony," "Resin" | 14 | | Mew Frengers
Favorite tracks: "Am I Wry? No," "156," "Her Voice Is Beyond Her Years," "She Spiders," "Comforting Sounds" | 15 | | Nightwish Wishmaster
Favorite tracks: "The Kinslayer," "Wanderlust," "Wishmaster," "Crownless," "Fantasmic" | 16 | | Iron Maiden Powerslave

Favorite tracks: "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Cecilia," "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright," "The Boxer," "The Only Living Boy In New York" | 18 | | Vince Guaraldi Trio A Charlie Brown Christmas
Pure nostalgia. No, really, I can listen to this any time of year, and this is all I need for Christmas. Favorite tracks: "O Tannenbaum," "Linus & Lucy," "Christmastime Is Here (Instrumental)," "Greensleeves" | 19 | | At The Drive-In Relationship of Command
Favorite tracks: "Arcarsenal," "One-Armed Scissor," "Sleepwalk Capsules," "Invalide Letter Dept.," "Quarantined" | 20 | | The Notorious B.I.G. Ready To Die

Favorite tracks: "The King Of Carrot Flowers, Part 1," "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea," "Two-Headed Boy," "Oh Comely" | 24 | | Jeff Buckley Grace
Favorite tracks: "Grace," "So Real," "Hallelujah," "Eternal Life," "Dream Brother" | 25 | | Wu-Tang Clan Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Favorite tracks: "Bring Da Ruckas," "Shame On A Nigga," "C.R.E.A.M.," "Protect Ya Neck," | 26 | | Foo Fighters The Colour and the Shape
Favorite tracks: "Monkey Wrench," "Hey, Johnny Park!," "Wind Up," "My Hero," "Everlong" | 27 | | Mae Singularity
It's not 'The Everglow', but this is still a REALLY good album. Favorite tracks: "Brink of Disaster," "Crazy 8's," "Sometimes I Can't Make It Alone," "Sic Semper Tyrannis," "Release Me," "Telescopes" | 28 | | The Mars Volta De-Loused In The Comatorium
A great album, but I still like 'Francis The Mute' better. Favorite tracks: "Inertiatic ESP," "Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)," "Drunkship of Lanterns," "Eriatarka," "Cicatriz ESP" | 29 | | Common Like Water For Chocolate
Favorite tracks: "Cold Blooded," "The Light," "The Questions," "The 6fh Sense," "Nag Champa (Afrodisiac For The World)," "Geto Heaven Part Two" | 30 | | The Butterfly Effect Imago
Favorite tracks: "Aisles Of White," "A Slow Descent," "Reach," "Before They Knew," "Everybody Runs" | 31 | | Rachel Loy Love The Mess
Rachel Loy would be an underground singer/songwriter who I sort-of fell in love with last year. Good stuff; very uplifiting, even for a dude like me. Favorite tracks: "Overboard," "Big Sky," "Love The Mess," "Looking At Me," "Unscrew You" | 32 | | Good Old War Only Way To Be Alone
Because I'm a huge Days Away fan ;-). Favorite tracks: "Coney Island," "Just Another Day," "No Time," "Maybe Mine," "Stay By My Side" | 33 | | MewithoutYou Brother, Sister
Awesome album, but I'm still a slightly bigger fan of 'Catch For Us The Foxes'. Favorite tracks: "Wolf Am I! (and Shadow)," "Nice and Blue (Pt. 2)," "Orange Spider," "O, Porcupine," "In A Sweater Poorly Knit" | 34 | | Becoming The Archetype Dichotomy
Favorite tracks: "Mountain of Souls," "Dichotomy," "St. Anne's Lullaby," "How Great Thou Art" | 35 | | Slowdive Souvlaki
Favorite tracks: "Alison," "Machine Gun," "Here She Comes," "Altogether," "Country Rain" | |

02.05.10 | This was the list that was deleted that I mentioned in that "Sputnik" list. You might get why I was just a tad bit frustrated over it.
A little late to the "Best of '09" party, perhaps, but not done yet! | Deviant.
