10 albums i've bought recently, and what i think of them... | 1 | | Sylosis Casting Shadows
Heard about these guys through myspace, and liked the song on their profile, so when i saw the EP on sale, i thought "fuck it, why not?!" its nothing groundbreaking, just really good, solid, semi-melodic metal with some amazing guitarwork and great solos which dont dissappear into wanking territory. | 2 | | AFI The Art Of Drowning
I got re-introduced to these guys a coupla weeks ago, having only really listened to the odd song of theirs now and again in the last few years. Heard this whole album at a friend's place, and immediately went out to buy it, effectively halving my drinking money for the week (yeah, im a scummy, penniless student), but hell, it was worth it, not one single song strays below "amazing"!!! | 3 | | Billy Talent Billy Talent
So i had five pounds burning a whole in my pocket, and this was on offer for a fiver... Again, an impulse purchase, considering the only song i could remember hearing off it was "River Below", but i was pleasantly suprised. the vocals take some getting used to, but theres some really catchy stuff on here, and its a little bit different from your average modern pop-punk record. | 4 | | Opeth Damnation
Been looking for the double-album Opeth set for ages now, and managed to find it a while back, so i jumped at the chance to get it. I dunno, this one's really hard to get into, maybe its the lack of heavy parts (i expected there might be one or two, but no...), i dont know, but it just doesnt seem to go anywhere, and is really quite depressing. However, i daresay with a few more listens, it'll reveal a few secrets, as Opeth albums tend to do. I don't dislike this album at all, but its not quite sunk in yet... | 5 | | Opeth Deliverance
Now this is more like it!!! Heavy as fuck it's very self, the decreased amount of clean parts threw me off for a while, but this album gets better with every listen! Especially the title track, with those awesome drum parts! | 6 | | American Hi-Fi American Hi-Fi
Yeah, that's right, remember these guys? Big in 2001? yeah, well i heard "flavour of the weak" at a rock club (which for some reason plays almost exclusively emo and pop punk, but hey, its a night out!) and immediately thought, i really like this song actually, and got all nostalgic for the days when i was first getting into rock music. bought the album for about 6quid, and again, was presently suprised. nothing new or groundbreaking, but consistently catchy and memorable, like all good pop-rock should be! | 7 | | Mr. Bungle Mr Bungle
Being a massive fan of Faith No More, and having quite liked the Peeping Tom album, i've recently started to view Mike Patton as the genius most people insist he is, so it was only a matter of time i expanded on the mp3 of "my ass is on fire" that someone had sent me, and bought a bungle album. it's basically one hour long headfuck-at-the-circus, but at the same time really catchy, spooky, hilarious, and downright scary in equal measures. great album, and a listening experience in itself! | 8 | | Heavens Patent Pending
Similarly to my reasons for buying the bungle album, i'm a massive Alkaline Trio fan, and i'd quite liked the songs that had been released in advance from this, so buying it was a no-brainer. To be fair, i'd normally baulk at the thought of listening to anything that "sounds like interpol" (i hate that band), but maybe it's matt's voice, maybe its the twisted lyrics, or maybe its just a guilty pleasure, i dont know, but i think this is a great album, that'll stay in my cd player for some time. | 9 | | The Draft In A Million Pieces
I fucking LOVED Hot Water Music, so i was distraught when i found out that were breaking up, so much so that i completely missed the fact that three of them were forming a new band. when the news eventually did reach me, i immediately went on their myspace and had a listen, and despite being quite suprised at how much more melodic than HWM this is, i was impressed, a feeling which continued throughout my listening to the album. No its not HWM, but its still feck'n immense! | 10 | | Testament The Legacy
Trawling through the random files people had sent me over the years, i found an unlabelled thrash song which i immediately liked, and googling the lyrics, found that it was "burnt offerings" by testament. several months later, i found this album on the shelves of my local cd shop, and bought it right away. suffice to say, i honestly think this is the greatest thrash metal album of the 80s (and i've heard most of them)!!! | |

10.21.06 | The Opeth albums were gonna be a set of heavy/soft albums. Damnation was meant to be all soft while Deliverance was the heavy album. | Kyle
10.21.06 | Whoa, 2 of my friends are in Sylosis! They're a local band from my area, that's kinda wierd. | spoon_of_grimbo
10.21.06 | yeah i know about the idea behind the opeth albums, but it still struck me as weird, after being so used to the mixture of the two styles.
and Kyle, have you seen those guys live? i've been meaning to go see them soon. have a word in their ears and get them to come to coventry!!! | Oddsen
10.21.06 | I need 2 and 7. | Kyle
10.21.06 | Lol, yeah i've seen them play local bars and stuff, and even at my old school before they got so big.
Tbh, I don't really like them, but it's cool that they're getting some recognition these days. | TheMisterBungle
10.21.06 | YES MR. BUNGLE RULES!!!!
nice choice | MrKite
10.21.06 | whoa i never would have though you liked them^ | Zesty Mordant
10.21.06 | Whoa, I had no idea that there's a spinoff band of HWM. I have to hear this. | spoon_of_grimbo
10.21.06 | if you liked the last three HWM albums, particularly caution, then the chances are you'll like The Draft. personally i dont think theyre quite as good as HWM, but theyre still excellent!

11.23.06 | Billy Talent is a pretty awesome cd. Try Honesty is my favourite. | wakeupdead
11.27.06 | #3 is the only one that I own on here. An excellent CD. | sam_valley
11.29.06 | Have you heard Opeth's newest album Ghost Reveries? I havent but I really like the Grand Conjuration. | spoon_of_grimbo
12.31.06 | ghost reveries is an excellent album, but it's not their best, and the grand conjuration is probably the worst track on there, but then again, its the album that got me into opeth, so it's probably a good starting point. either that, "blackwater park" or "still life" anyway. |
