| Some Of The Best Covers I've Heard
This list is composed of 10 of my favorite covers of songs. The list is in no way comprehensive. There are plenty of great covers out there, this is just 10 that I enjoy. Similarly, this list is in no specific order. I was going to attempt to rank them in order, but lets be realistic, its just too hard sometimes to rank songs you love so much in some kind of order. | 1 | Jeff Buckley Hallelujah
Jeff Buckley has one of the most dynamic and powerful voices I have ever heard. His version of this song is the inspiration for this list and as such I felt deserved to have the honor of first mention. | 2 | Donavon Frankenreiter Fortunate Son
This take of Fortunate Son gave the song an entirely different feel. It brought an anthem of the 70's to the new millennium. He has a great voice and does a great job with this CCR cover. | 3 | Paul Simon Surfer Girl
A tribute to Brian Wilson included this amazing cover of Surfer Girl. Paul Simon's version of this song is passionate and brings a great dynamic to the song. | 4 | Barenaked Ladies God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
So this one is to give the list a more full feel. Christmas songs are covered by hundreds of artists across the globe (including a soon to be released Bob Dylan Christmas CD, an event I am both excited for and tentative to endorse). This cover brings the song a new feel. It is upbeat, entertaining, but keeps that wonderful Christmas spirit. Thought this could be an interesting addition to the list. Not to mention they really do have great voices and are always intriguing with their harmonies. | 5 | Ben Folds Golden Slumbers
So The Beatles are a band that I didn't think I would enjoy covers of. But this was the first of a decent number of covers that I have found myself enjoying (see number 9). Although Ben Folds doesn't break the mold of this song too much, he does do it great justice and as such, deserves a spot on this list. | 6 | Joe Cocker Feelin' Alright
So when it comes to just entertaining me, this song has always produced. Originally written by Dave Mason for Traffic, Feelin' Alright was made popular by Joe Cocker. This is also a favorite for the Japanese art of Karaoke. | 7 | Eric Clapton Layla
Yes, I know he wrote the song, but my cover reference is to his unplugged version. Being as it was written for and with Cream, it would seem to me that this is technically a cover. But I know that to many, its his song. Either way, its an awesome song, and in fact, its probably not even the best on the Unplugged album, but its still a great one, and one of his more, if not most, famous. So it definitely deserves a spot on this list. | 8 | Tony Bennett The Way You Look Tonight
So again, this song is just to give some diversity to the list, although I do still love this song. I first heard this song with my first serious girlfriend and it became out song. Ever since then it has stuck with me. Girls love it for dinner and to dance to. And yes, there are some other great versions out there, some even probably better, Sinatra for example, but this is the version that has stuck with me. | 9 | Various Artists 85% of the soundtrack to Across the Universe
Ok, so this one may cause some controversy, but I'm sorry, I think some of these covers are great. Most specifically, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, I Want to Hold Your Hand, With a Little Help From My Friends, I've Just Seen a Face, Something, Oh Darling, and most specifically Let It Be. Now I know The Beatles are in a class of their own. And I know there is no replacing what they could do. But man do these guys do a great job with some of their songs. They change tempos, keys, everything, and yet the songs still hit us hard with powerful vocals and the wonderful melodies only the Beatles could write. | 10 | John Mayer Bold As Love
John Mayer is an artist who I feel has finally come into his own with Continuum, and even more so with his Trio. This song is a great cover of a classic song. His guitar playing is amazing, something to be appreciated by all, whether or not you like the songs he plays. | |

How about these:
Deftones - Simple Man AND No Ordinary Love
Thrice - Send Me an Angel
Opeth - Would?
August Burns Red - Baby One More Time
Shadows Fall - Welcome to the Machine
I know, I know, they're all metal bands... but whatever..

09.11.09 | Interesting to see 4, it's actually one of my favourite Christmas covers. If you like that, I would suggest getting Sufjan Stevens Christmas EP's, there is some really good stuff on that. And every cover's list needs 1 so good job. |
