| Inverted Umbrella 2023-24 Results:
This was a lot of fun. The top 2 were well-deserved, but there can only be one winner! | 1 | | Family Music in a Doll's House
SlothcoreSam - Psychedelic Pop
âThe Chaseâ
I like the orchestral parts and the organ. Short but weird as hell. I like how it sped up at the end a lot.
4.7/5 | 2 | | Matia Bazar Tango
SlothcoreSam - Industrial/Synthpop
âEletrohoccâ
Kate Bush but synthy and Italian. The instrumentation is so interesting! Frantic, really! I love it!
5/5 (Sloth's heaviest lifter!) | 3 | | Jamiroquai A Funk Odyssey
SlothcoreSam - Funk
âLittle Lâ
Sexy! Only song I really know by him is âVirtual Insanityâ, but this is more intense. Maybe a bit Off the Wall Michael Jacksony for me though. Disco-funk when I go more for like I donât know. Itâs not bad at all though.
3.6/5 | 4 | | Fishmans Kuuchuu Camp
SlothcoreSamâ - Dream Pop
ăă€ăăŻă«ăŒăžăłă° (Night Cruising)â (by Fishmans from Kuuchuu Camp)
Cutsier than Long Season. Itâs dreamy for sure. I feel like this needs more to it. Itâs almost ambient in tone, but itâs quite pleasant too. Not my favorite.
3.5/5 | 5 | | Red Aunts #1 Chicken
SlothcoreSam - Indie Pop/Indie Rock
âFreakathonâ
Vey punky⊠and brief! Fun, but yeah couldâve been more.
3.9/5 | 6 | | Lamb Lamb
SlothcoreSam - Trip Hop
âGod Blessâ
Drum and bass trip hop, hmmm. Nice atmosphere so far. The bass and strings are cool for sure. Definitely a good song.
4/5 | 7 | | Six Finger Satellite Severe Exposure
SlothcoreSam - Noise Rock
âParlour Gamesâ
Algorithms have told me to listen to these guys, but every time I sample them I only kind of like it. This is abrasive and cool, but maybe lean too far into post punk? Itâs fun though. I wish it was noisier honestly. Not sure why Iâm ripping into this one extra hard, itâs good enough!
3.7/5 | 8 | | Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot Bonnie and Clyde
SlothcoreSam - Baroque Pop
âBonnie and Clydeâ
The vocals are kind of dull, but the weird backups are cool. I wish the orchestral strings werenât just background elements. They need to lead more. I find this one kind of lame, honestly. Lacks life.
2.8/5 (Sloth's feet dragger) | 9 | | Modulos Grandes Ă©xitos
SlothcoreSam - Progressive Pop/Rock
âTodo tiene su finâ
Spanish prog, ooh fancy. Very emotional. Itâs good enough, but not my favorite.
3.5/5 | 10 | | Poison Girls Real Woman
SlothcoreSam - Punk
âIdeologically Unsoundâ
Weird vocals, but the beeping instrumental is cool. A slower tempo? Unexpected! Pretty cool!
3.6/5 | 11 | | Zager and Evans Zager & Evans
Fogza - Psychedelic Pop
âOvertureâ
Cool strings, cool voice effects, cool everything. Itâs so swirly! Somehow this is trippie than most psych pop Iâve heard. It keeps running out of steam, but in a good way. Wild stuff.
4.7/5 | 12 | | Leaether Strip Solitary Confinement
Fogza - Industrial/Synthpop
âStrap Me Downâ
Very EBM vocals and beat. Cool. I could totally club to this. I like the percussion here a lot.
4.4/5 | 13 | | Ian Dury and the Blockheads Do It Yourself
Fogza - Funk
âHit Me with Your Rhythm Stickâ
Very poppy and new wave. Kindy corny for me. Itâs a meh from me.
3.2/5 | 14 | | Beach House Once Twice Melody
Fogza - Dream Pop
"New Romanceâ
Very âmodernâ indie pop vocally and atmospherically. Beach House kind of puts me to sleep, but letâs see. Eh, this is pretty bland.
2.5/5 | 15 | | Wolf Parade Apologies to the Queen Mary
Fogza - Indie Pop/Rock
âI'll Believe in Anythingâ
Well, I hate these vocals. This is like if you made Modest Mouseâs Isaac Brock 5 times more annoying. I dislike this so much, maybe for the same reason I donât like Neutral Milk Hotel? Nah this is worse than that. Please end soon my god this is endless.
1.5/5 (Fogza's feet dragger) | 16 | | Strange Days Strange Days [Music From The Motion Picture]
Fogza - Trip Hop
âFall in the Lightâ
Pretty stings, I like the long build to them too. I want it to explode at the end, but I donât think itâs heading there. Not bad though!
3.9/5 | 17 | | Gilla Band Most Normal
Fogza - Noise Rock
âThe Gumâ (by Gilla Band from Most Normal)
Wow, this is abrasive. What a risk, I respect it! Itâs trippy and industrial under all that noise. Kinda cool actually.
4.6/5 | 18 | | Joanna Newsom Ys
Fogza - Baroque Pop
âOnly Skinâ
I used to dislike her voice, but Iâve gotten used to it. The harp is pretty too. Sheâs like a cartoon ladybug. Itâs long, but Iâm actually fairly engaged. This song takes up â
of the entire playlist, you realize that right? Ooh okay the strings are doing cool shit now. Disney music for hipsters, but do I mind? Nah. Itâs nostalgic, while also being novel. Itâs also like a laobor of love. This ending wonderfully crowded. I canât explain it, but this is objectively good, like how could I rate this anything else?
5/5 (Fogza's heavy lifter) | 19 | | Jethro Tull Songs from the Wood
Fogza - Progressive pop/Rock
âThe Whistlerâ
This oneâs kinda cute. An Irish jig? Hmmm. Itâs prog enough, but itâs really primarily Celtic folk, which is a risky choice, honestly. Canât say I like this, but itâs not bad.
3/5 | 20 | | Future of the Left Travels With Myself And Another
Fogza - Punk
âDrink Nikeâ
By meaty. The bass is cool and the vocals rule. Not quite cheating, but I bet you noticed that I like Mclusky already! This is fun as hell.
4.3/5 | 21 | | Frank Zappa Zoot Allures

01.08.24 | If fogza's indie song was at least a 2.8,he would've won, but I'm glad Joanna Newsom could clean Wolf Parade out of my ears.
Matia Bazar rules hard woo, Serge Gainsbourg is cool but Bonnie and Clyde was NOT it
SlothcoreSam is our winner, so the next 2 albums I listen to will be HIS choice!
I will give each at least 1 listen, at least 3 listens if they're 2.5's or higher. The only stipulation is that the albums have to be under 3 hours each. So no Bull of Heaven ;) | pizzamachine
01.08.24 | I win :D | CugnoBrasso
01.08.24 | Lol Matia Bazar is one of my mother's favorite bands | fogza
01.08.24 | Congrats to sam, a worthy winner, and thanks to ars for running this, was a fun challenge. I knew something wasn't quite right with my final list, but I couldn't quite pin it down | AsleepInTheBack
01.08.24 | The shame i feel is immeasurable | SlothcoreSam
01.08.24 | Oh yeah, I went continental and it paid off.
Thanks Ass and the foggy South African for the game.
Now I just need to think of 2 albums for the Arseman to check.
One will be Gezan with Million Wish Collective - Anochi, my AOTY.
Just gotta think of another. | BitterJalapenoJr
01.08.24 | Congratulations Mr Sloth. | ffs
01.08.24 | rip me, dead from prog
v fun comp blessings to u | ArsMoriendi
01.08.24 | Haha yeah it was a fun one
Might do it again in 2026 or something lol
I will make Anochi my next listen! No rush on the 2nd one, take your time haha remember the sky is the limit and Bull of Heaven is in outer space | GhandhiLion
01.08.24 | Prog wins | SlothcoreSam
01.08.24 | Hope to see a running cometary or mini review for the album. Also read someone's great review of Anochi as a companion. | kildare
01.08.24 | Awesome to see the Leather Strip album on here. One of my favs. Glad you didn't hate it | SlothcoreSam
01.10.24 | One album down, here's the second, have you heard it before?
Various Artists - Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys
I just added it to the database

01.10.24 | Omg okay 2 hours and 37 minutes? Sure letâs go | fogza
01.10.24 | Should have let me win I would have picked mission of Burma and some 40 min album and you'd have been done with some spare change time | SlothcoreSam
01.10.24 | Lol, you said under 3 hours. Get your eye patch on, arrrrrrrrrrgh
At least it's a compilation. | ArsMoriendi
01.10.24 | Oh itâs allowed! I am jamming Eelâs Electro-Shock Blues though cuz I was ready for a new album yesterday and got impatient
Pirate album will be next though!!! | Demon of the Fall
01.11.24 | Only Skin is an easy 5/5 song, nice
God Bless was a great choice also, love that Lamb album
Night Cruising rules also
Drink Nike is a weird choice for that album, but okay cool
interesting looking game, even if I did miss every other round
congrats to Slothcore! | fogza
01.11.24 | "Drink Nike is a weird choice for that album, but okay cool"
Really? I just felt Drink Nike was in line with a streamlined punk dynamic but also has a choppy wonky guitar line and prominent bass in the verse which Ars usually likes (I considered Chin Music, Stand by your manatee and That damned fly), and I wanted short energetic songs to round out the list after 'Only Skin' | Demon of the Fall
01.11.24 | Arming Eritrea / Chin Music are just better songs imo and definitely have the same hard hitting energetic streamlined punk thing going on | fogza
01.11.24 | arming is a better song, but i wanted something in which the verses were thinner and transitioned into the muscular part of the song instead of the other way around, also arming is more of a build up kinda thing. I dig 'chin music' but 'drink nike' is definitely the better song imo | Demon of the Fall
01.11.24 | I see, hmm maybe... it seems you put a lot of thought into this defeat
conclusion: thinking is bad for you | fogza
01.11.24 | actually, i did well with my drink nike selection. i got kinda in my own head and changed my original choice for my indie and dream pop pick, but in retrospect I think I should have gone with my first two picks that I thought about a lot. I think my original indie pick would have won it for me *damn my lack of conviction* | ArsMoriendi
01.11.24 | What was your original indie pick? | fogza
01.11.24 | built to spill - Made-Up Dreams | ArsMoriendi
01.11.24 | Idk that song but if itâs anything like the other Built to Spill Iâve heard it wouldâve been at least a 3 | fogza
01.11.24 | yeah which would have been just enough to squeeze through. ultimately though the result was right because I think sam was more consistent anyway, only had one low | Demon of the Fall
01.11.24 | admittedly you had Joanna's 'Only Skin' tho, thus I'd let you win by default by having the greatest song ever written (only slight hyperbole here) as part of your repertoire
but obvs I don't make the rules | ArsMoriendi
01.18.24 | It's sea shanty time I guess! | ArsMoriendi
01.18.24 | Is this opening guy Tuvan throat singing? I thought these were sea shanties | ArsMoriendi
01.18.24 | @Slothcore: you should've recommended the sequel album, it has Tom Waits, Frank Zappa, Michael Stipe, Dr. John, Todd Rundgren, a Patti Smith/Johnny Depp duet, Michael Gira (lol?), and... Anjelica Huston???? what
I guess I'll settle for Nick Cave, Lou Reed, Sting, Akron/Family, Van Dyke Parks, and ...John C. Reilly, sure | SlothcoreSam
01.18.24 | The sequel is pretty good too, but still had it's highs and lows, so can get tedious. |
