| November Rec me Drum and Bass
I got into drum and bass for a few years in the 2010s, and I collected a few albums, and listened to many more, most of them not on sputnik. I am forgetting a bunch, but I will try to update the list as I uncover some other picks.
I am an American, and I have an incomplete understanding of the genre, please send recs in comments. Particularly interested in newer atmospheric jungle/drum and bass. | 1 | | Teebee Through The Eyes Of A Scorpion
My favorite dj/producer. If I'm ranking his discography, this is great but edged out slightly by 2 albums he did with producer K: 'The Deeper Side of Drum and Bass' and 'Black Science' | 2 | | DLR Seeing Sounds
Another favorite artist of mine, this one is on Dispatch Recordings | 3 | | Lenzman Looking At The Stars
I think this guy is buddies with Calibre? | 4 | | Photek Modus Operandi
Photek was a master producer even 25 years ago, now he does mostly film scores and commercial music | 5 | | Omni Trio Rogue Satellite
The first dnb album I ever listened to, not particularly special | 6 | | High Contrast Tough Guys Dont Dance
I own this album, but never really got into the Hospital records lineup too much. | 7 | | Various Artists Platinum Breakz, Vol. 4
Metalheadz - my favorite label | 8 | | Goldie Timeless
This album is a rite of passage, I guess? It still holds up | 9 | | Commix Call To Mind
This album is a classic, and also Commix' 'Generation' series of EPs from the past few years are sick. | 10 | | Calibre Shelflife 3
Calibre is just comforting to listen to. The dude is a recluse, and I respect his artistic integrity | 11 | | Nu:Tone Little Spaces
What a difference it makes when a producer pays attention to instrumentation. Nu:tone uses many traditional instruments such as guitar, upright bass, piano, and strings, and even though they seem to often be synthesized, the result is a balanced and clean mix where everything sits neatly in its right place, leaving room for guest vocalists to shine. Nu:tone also really knows how to construct a good break. This is a well put-together set of mostly uplifting liquid dnb tracks with a fresh, tasteful and modern style that doesn’t overdo things.
While some of the tracks have a similar sound, it’s always groovy and has enough variety that at 64 minutes it didn’t feel overly long for casual listening. Perfectly suitable for headphones, but ‘Little Spaces’ is probably best experienced on your home or car stereo.
3.5-4 | 12 | | Alix Perez 1984 | 13 | | Kasra Ski Mask
On these four dancefloor-ready tracks, Kasra takes cues from neurofunk while showing his versatility as a producer. There is some nice synthesis in the bass sounds, which are a heavy focus of this EP. The highlight for me is the funky ‘Miso.’ In total it’s great sampling of tracks to add to a DJ set, but I can’t help but feel I have heard this style executed before with a bit more flair.
3.5 | 14 | | Junior Varsity KM Taking Care of You (Bliss Out, Vol. 10) | 15 | | Nookie Beyond Blue | 16 | | LTJ Bukem Logical Progression
There are a lot of ways to experience this compilation. I'm not even sure I listened to the right record. I opted for the continuous vocal mix of 'Logical Progressions Level 1.' I have heard some of the tracks before on various mixes from around 1995-1996. The group of DJs and producers on this compilation originated the jazz and ambient-infused jungle sound on LTJ Bukem's own Good Looking Records around this time. The ambient sections of the album are quite nice, and generally occur in the track intros, so I would probably recommend listening track-by-track. | 17 | | Yung Lain Layers | 18 | | Richie Brains Who is Richie Brains? | 19 | | dBridge The Gemini Principle | 20 | | Blu Mar Ten Famous Lost Words | 21 | | Grooverider Mysteries Of Funk | 22 | | Coco Bryce Night on Earth | 23 | | Pizza Hotline LEVEL SELECT | 24 | | Jungle Fatigue Kru Jungle Fatigue Vol. 2 | 25 | | Forest Drive West Set Free
On this modern jungle EP Forest Drive West creates dark mystical ambient spaces with fine production, but we don't explore these spaces in a very subtle way. This makes the EP fall short of Photek levels of greatness, although there is plenty of that grayscale, almost filmographic aesthetic to go around. All together this is something exciting and different from a talented producer in several genres. | |

11.06.23 | Artemis - Elysian Fields / Desideradi (and his two other singles and his stuff under the Shogun moniker)
The Chameleon - Links / Just Close Your Eyes & Listen
Soichi Terada - Sumo Jungle Grandeur (novelty record but p killer as such)
Adam F - Colours
Junior Varsity KM - Taking Care Of You

for newer stuff:
Kasra - Ski Mask
Dreamweaver - Blue Garden
Kinoteki - Dawn of the Final Hour | stupidpuma89
11.06.23 | Thanks for the recs, will give Nu:Tone a spin nightbringer. Johnny, I have definitely listened to Colours (“Metropolis” is one of the best dnb tracks I’ve heard). Also I listened to the Dreamweaver album when it came out, not much else like it really, I would almost categorize it as drum n gaze, is that a thing?
I’m going to try to locate a the Dream Dolphin album

11.06.23 | If cello n' bass would be ok for you too, I strongly recommend
Guts Pie Earshot - Chapter 2 volume 1

It's having a lot of drum n bass aesthetics, but Cello melodies and punk influences added. It's awesome!
If you like experimental / avantgarde / noise stuff, Japanese weirdos Ruins are really great, virtuoso and completely crazy!

11.06.23 | Dream Dolphin is a YouTube-or-piracy deal unfortunately, distribution for the majority of her discog didn't survive the CD era (there are some flacs around though, I think including for that alb?) | GhandhiLion
11.06.23 | Check Na Vucca Do Lupu by Three Mile Pilot. Good drum and bass 👍 | ReefaJones
11.06.23 | LTJ Bukem - Logical Progression is an essential listen | stupidpuma89
11.06.23 | Donchivo, do I know you? In high school I played cello and was in a punk band, the Guts Pie Earshot track is wild, would like to see that live. | TheHamburgerman
11.06.23 | Blu Mar Ten
Just check that out, there's more to come but really just check that out | stupidpuma89
11.07.23 | I added some more recs to the list. Thanks to everyone who submitted. I left off some of the more hardcore recommendations, as I usually listen to dnb and psybient while I'm coding so I'm more digging the atmospheric jungle and liquid dnb stuff right now.
I'll leave my impressions over the course of November, but I probably won't score any of these unless I feel compelled. | Donchivo
11.07.23 | @stupidpuma: yeah man, I actually discovered them during a concert. They are an incredibly energetic live band!!
Hmmm I am not sure about punk bands and Cello from my high school times which is more than 20 years back, but I am actually from Germany... | nightbringer
11.07.23 | Glad nu:tone was positive! | Christbait
11.07.23 | Aside from listening to Venetian Snares like a decade and a half ago, I've rarely listened to DnB or DnB-adjacent stuff. But this Platinum Breakz album is fantastic. | stupidpuma89
11.08.23 | Yeah they go all out for that compilation series. Listening back, I'm remembering around 2011-2013 there were two artists in the "post dubstep" genre I was following, Om Unit and Reso, that started producing drum and bass and it blew my mind. For another list. | stupidpuma89
11.08.23 | @nightbringer - It's an enjoyable listen, and I will be returning to it. I like that it's got the positive liquid dnb vibe without going overboard. |
