| New York, New York
Was talking to a friend from Long Island, NY the other day. He had grown up seeing live the bands below. I had also been influenced by these bands in the early 1990's. Struck me that (after the temporary demise of 80's hard rock [e.g., Anthrax, Dream Theatre]) NY alternative and metal had a huge influence in the early 1990's - keeping metal alive through grunge and post-grunge. And then, around 1995/1996 - when nu-metal came around - focus shifted to the west coast - and several of these bands either broke up (e.g., White Zombie) or just shifted out of the public eye (e.g., Prong). Not listed in any specific order. | 1 | | Helmet Meantime
One of my all-time favorite 90's alternative bands. This album and Betty were monumental. Was awesome seeing their 30-30 concert. | 2 | | Type O Negative October Rust
Seeing Peter Steele live - twice - was a highlight of my college years. IMO, this was their best album ever. | 3 | | Biohazard Mata Leao
One of the few of these bands that stayed somewhat relevant during nu metal years. | 4 | | Orange 9mm Tragic | 5 | | White Zombie La Sexorcisto-Devil Music Vol. 1
Seems cliche now - but the Satanist schtick really struck for real on this album - and in subsequent album AstroCreep 2000. Made albums like Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil look like a joke. | 6 | | Life of Agony River Runs Red
A harrowing album for dark times. | 7 | | Prong Prove You Wrong
Along with Pantera, this band (and this album in particular) had huge influence on me. Unconditional and prove You Wrong are classic tracks, as was Snap Your Fingers, Snap your Neck on Cleansing. | 8 | | Sick of It All Built to Last
Didn't listen to this band a lot, but had some influence. | 9 | | Quicksand Slip
More influential in tone than most would have imagined. Slip is still standout to this day. And still kicking out great albums. | |

10.08.23 | Other than Candiria and Vision of Disorder; seems like NJ had better luck in the 2000's - with Ill Nino, God Forbid, and the Dillinger Escape Plan. | bellovddd
10.09.23 | the fact you got to see Pete Steele TWICE i will be forever jealous of. | JDubb
10.09.23 | I had a random friend at college who was into Type O. Can’t even remember this dude’s name - but he convinced me to see them at the masquerade - for the October Rust tour. TBH - hadn’t heard much of them b4 seeing them live. It was shock and awe, for me - a classic WTF did I just see moment. And how physically imposing Peter Steele was... My mind was fairly blown afterwards. | ArsMoriendi
10.09.23 | NY pride | Titan
10.09.23 | I saw Type O Negative live twice, both times at Jones Beach on Long Island. At best, they were ‘ok’. | Ryus

10.09.23 | Funny - but the list title - “NY, NY” comes from a snippet of a Frank Sinatra song. I’m generally referring to NYC though. But isn’t Long Island just a glorified suburb of NYC/Manhattan? At least that was my take from visiting both many moons ago…traffic into the city suggests so. | DadKungFu
10.09.23 | Prong is so underappreciated and forever jealous of seeing Type O [2] |
