06.24.22 | I checked a spaceghost thing and there was some interesting production on it btw |
Hyperion1001
06.24.22 | spaceghost is more or less responsible for cloud rap and the resurgence of the Memphis sound during the SoundCloud scene.
too bad he’s an actual crazy person who everyone hates now. |

06.24.22 | Based list |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.24.22 | Do people consider the type of cloud rap clouddead stake claim to and the type that clams casino and lil b stake claim to as distinct? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.24.22 | Like how there are two different subgenres called “glitch hop” ? |
GhandhiLion
06.24.22 | Is there a branch of cloud rap artists that are influenced by cLOUDDEAD and not clams / lil b / viper ? |
GhandhiLion
06.24.22 | Or can just be traced back to them. |
Hyperion1001
06.24.22 | honestly I don’t really make a distinction I think they’re cut from the same cloth, but guys like spaceghost and black kray pioneered the sound in the underground around 08-09 by my reckoning.
ive always considered that first A$AP rocky mixtape to be the point where it hit the true mainstream, and spaceghost and him had well publicized beef leading up to and after that album. there’s probably some rap blog article about it somewhere. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.24.22 | So how come you say spaceghost and black kray pioneered it if you view what clouddead did to be the same genre? Don’t know much about cloud rap and it’s interesting how different the sounds are so I’m genuinely curious about the history |
Ryus
06.24.22 | honestly i feel the opposite hype. i feel like clouddead is it's own thing without any real analogues in 2010s-present day hip hop |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.24.22 | “ Is there a branch of cloud rap artists that are influenced by cLOUDDEAD and not clams / lil b / viper ?”
Probably nearly exclusively more anticon shit 😂
But were the forefathers of the trappy kind of cloud rap even influenced by clouddead? Or is it coincidental. It’s a confusing legacy lol |
GhandhiLion
06.24.22 | From what I've read cLOUDDEAD are not cloud rap. If they are related to the genre then it's unlikely that they had any direct influence on the trap stuff. |
GhandhiLion
06.24.22 | What ryus said basically |
Hyperion1001
06.24.22 | i agree with that to an extent, it’s very different flavors of the same basic thing but I don’t really know what genres you would put them in if you want to make the distinction. that’s why genres are so weird because they’re good basic descriptors but do they really tell you what the album actually sounds like? I’ve never been so sure about that.
there’s no arguing that they sound very different though, it’s just all about how you want to signify it with a genre label.
if clouddead isn’t cloud rap then what is it? alternative hiphop? I genuinely don’t know. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.24.22 | @ghandhi Clouddead were referred to as cloud rap before all that other stuff existed and I remember it distinctly |
GhandhiLion
06.24.22 | Interesting. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.24.22 | “ Cloud rap initially came out of Atlanta, Houston, and Memphis during the late 2000s.[6] The term "cloud rap" is popularly used in reference to lo-fi, hazy rap.[3]
Elements of cloud rap, like lo-fi and dreamy atmospheres, can be heard as early as 2001 with cLOUDDEAD's self-titled album”
I’m getting the sense that clouddead was referred to as cloud rap until what cloudrap as we know it came to be, at which point clouddead was kind of relegated to a position of being a sort of proto-cloud rap that isn’t much connected to the latter format aside from being the first to really embrace “hazy lofi production” in a very generalized sense |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.24.22 | On an aside it’s funny how utterly dead and forgotten anticon and anything anticon related is. |
sr388
06.24.22 | my knowledge of cloud rap only went as far back as clams, that's really interesting |
GhandhiLion
06.24.22 | That's how I feel too @pots. I'll try looking for some early mentions of the term online |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.24.22 | I’m actually really curious if any of these early dudes would cite clouddead as an influence at all |
Hyperion1001
06.24.22 | honestly listen to ryus moreso than me, like I’m into the scene and like a lot of that stuff but I certainly wouldn’t call myself an expert or anything.
another bias is that I don’t really like clouddead all that much honestly. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.24.22 | Most of it and the rest of the anticon stuff has aged very poorly imo but boy was I hot on it as a young lad |
Hyperion1001
06.24.22 | still sad that antwon turned out to be a rapist cause I used to jam his stuff a lot back in the day.
fuck him tho. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.24.22 | Oh shit that’s news to me, gonna look that up. That sucks. |
Hyperion1001
06.24.22 | it killed off what was gonna be an amazing posse with secret circle, that was ugly mane, wiki, and Antwon. but when the allegations came out they ended it immediately. luckily I got to see them in NYC before it all blew up.
like I said, fuck him, like how hard is it not to rape. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
