05.04.21 | So the thinking here is I've always felt a good way to judge how legendary a year is for music is check the debut albums - you tend to find years with loads of great new bands tends to be very strong overall. |

Boney - no, a rebranding or solo venture counts as a new artist...but I know what you mean. I'd also have to remove the Jenny Beth - but that feels very much a debut of a new thing. the Matt album less so but that's more due to the style than the idea.
So next year Purple Mountains will count

05.04.21 | Yeah, I can manage a 10 item list a day though - not too much research required on this series. Might need to check a few extra debut albums from the early 80s, always the time period with the most gaps in my listening.

05.04.21 | Interesting take Doof - I guess my feel is that any new band can count as a debut but a well-established act going solo doesn’t really unless it’s a substantial change in style/direction from previous works. Serpentine Prison while it doesn’t sound quite like any National album sounds pretty much exactly how anyone would expect a Berninger solo album to sound. Like technically it is a solo debut but it feels odd to call it one of the best debuts of the year - you do you though!
Purple Mountains is an edge case - it was basically a solo moniker for Berman and arguably could have been called a Silver Jews album without anybody questioning it. I guess these things can change with retrospect too - had Berman gone on to release a bunch more albums under the name it wouldn’t seem as odd to call it a debut. |
