This may be off Frankâs album, but Iâm really reccing this song for who wrote it: James Fauntleroy. This was the first Iâd heard of him, but he went on to co-write, produce, and star in some of my favorite projects from the last decade, including Kendrickâs To Pimp a Butterfly, JTâs 20/20 Vision, and Brunoâs 24k Magic. Despite his prolific status in the music industry, heâs all but unknown except in the most elite circles. So have a little music history lesson with this short-but-sweet bit of Stevie Wonder worship! |

05.02.21 | "Straight Edge"
The music's here is meh. Punk was doing a ton of interesting things in 1981 and this isn't one of them. The vocals are VERY mumbled too, so while it's supposed to be a messaged-driven song, you end up having to look up the lyrics for the most part to get the details. I swear, people like the idea of this song more than the actual song. Sure it started a movement in punk, but let's be super real: this song is on the Richard Nixon side of the drug war. This is Richard Nixon punk to a point where it even takes a shot at marijuana. Fuck it, D.A.R.E program punk.

05.06.21 | TBH if you guys would post links with your songs it'd be a lot harder for me to miss them
Otherwise it's like looking for a needle in a haystack |
ArsMoriendi
05.06.21 | "I'd Buy That for a Dollar"
Oh look it's Miguel Ferrer! Gross vocals, decent guitar. Not my thing, but it has some good elements.
2.9/5 |
DadKungFu
05.06.21 | I never understood Miguel Ferrer's appeal as a "cult" character actor. Like Harry Dean Stanton or Lance Henriksen I get but Miguel's always just been kind of there idk |
ArsMoriendi
05.06.21 | I just love him as Albert on Twin Peaks |
Divaman
05.06.21 | Yeah. Me too. |
ieatbabies795
05.06.21 | it was so tough to find even a decent song that wasnt a punk/hardcore track
but hey im glad i found a good track to toss in there |
Minushuman24
05.06.21 | The fact that I got a 2.9 on a MURF song from ars is a win for me |
zakalwe
05.06.21 | Elizabeth My Dear - Stone Roses
When I first heard this as a teen it was cool and rebellious.
Listening to it now as a middle aged bloke in his forties the thing still carries a menace and threat.
Canât knock a bit of Scarborough Fair either.

fogza
05.07.21 | 7. AM 300 TAG - Awesome because it's not punk or hardcore. The catch is it sounds like an interlude, or a dude recording an idea on his Dictaphone, as opposed to a song. 2.5 |
ArsMoriendi
05.07.21 | "AM 300 TAG"
The song wastes 8 seconds shaking a spray paint can. Now it's instrumental hip hop with a bit of a jazz feel. Something about the fade-out makes this seem like such a transitionary track. It's fine, but it doesn't make great use of the little time it has.
3/5 |
dedex
05.07.21 | 7. AM 300 TAG - lmaoooooooo that yt vid opens with "DEX MUSIC" đđđ it indeed sounds more like an interlude, but that's what you got with 59 seconds hip hop tunes. 3.2
also put some respek on Miguel, dude was super cool in Robocop, Hot Shots 2, and Traffic |
Trifolium
05.07.21 | I would have thought many interludes would make the list but apparently that wasn't what you all were thinking... Hmm... Also it's an INTRO!!!!! 𤊠HA! Fooled you! |
Divaman
05.07.21 | DJ Krush - 10 seconds of dead space before he even starts. And then ... yep, it IS an intro. 2.5 |
fogza
05.08.21 | 8. Auntie's Harp - this also sounds a bit interludey, but maybe a bit less so. 3 |
DadKungFu
05.08.21 | 7. DJ Krush - Yeah it feels like an intro and not a fleshed out song but it feels like it sets the stage for something potentially really good.
3.5
Flying Lotus - Beautifully produced little amuse-bouche of a track.
3.8 |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.08.21 | 1. Minutemen - Search: funk punk grooves yes very good funk punk koolboi vox not so good I should listen to this band 3.5
2. Minor Threat - Straight Edge: Maybe this is good I should listen to this band too but Minutemen are definitely coming first 3.2
3. Mannequin Pussy - Drunk I: This is fun and catchy and pretty solid, huge swag points for using 10 entire seconds of a 53 second song for absolutely nothing 3.7
4. Wire - Field Day for the Sundays: Heh yeah this is iconic. Never listened to it on its own before, so some of its succinctness kinda got swallowed by the rest of the album. But now this has changed. Very cool! 3.8
5. Adolescents - Self Destruct: I always forget that budgie punks. This is surprisingly solid, punk gang are doing okay for once 3.8
6. Murf - I'd Buy That for a Dollar: Yeah okay I could not pick this out of a crowd 3.1
7. Dj Krush - Am 300 Tag: Trip-hop is one of the least sub-60 sec genres ever probably but this still catches its groove and that has to count for SOMETHING. It does not hold it though because TIME. Hmmm. 3.5
8. Flying Lotus - Auntie's Harp: Haven't listened to LA in ages and always thought it was maybe his most overrated. This is a slick interlude loop and it is good 3.7
9. Naked City - Bonehead: Yeah ngl I'm kinda annoyed at this, probably one of my least favourite of Naked City's (memorable) grind tracks. The power chord approach was never the best look for them and I'd happily have thrown down a 5 for one of their flash-in-a-pan classics like NY Flat Top Box, Speedfreaks or Demon Sanctuary. This is still pretty good though 3.3 |
Divaman
05.08.21 | Flying Lotus - An interlude, but nice. 3.2 |
YoYoMancuso
05.08.21 | aight fellas we back
6. Murf 3.0
7. DJ Krush 3.5
8. Flying Lotus 3.5 |
ArsMoriendi
05.08.21 | "Auntie's Harp"
Very twinkly. It doesn't really have a beginning or end, so it feels like a transitionary track. Not bad, but I don't love it either.
3.2/5 |
fogza
05.08.21 | 9. Bonehead - Sounds like an acting class warm up set to music. Exactly as bad as you would think that sounds. 1 |

05.10.21 | 10. Coffee - The wrong side of cute. 2 |
dedex
05.10.21 | 8. Auntie's Harp - one of the best short FlyLo tracks. 3.8
9. Bonehead - first youtube comment: "this is what people who dont like metal think metal sounds like". Yes. It do be frantic. 3.0
10. Coffee - at first I thought fogza exaggerated but yeah some parts of this were cringe af. 2.5 |
fogza
05.10.21 | I NEVER exaggerate |
ArsMoriendi
05.10.21 | "Bonehead"
Is that Yamataka Eye? This is very animalistic like a caveman shouting over a harsh environment. Pretty neat. I guess I was already halfway there though because I like Boredoms.
3.9/5
"Coffee"
I know this one! Goofy, simple, and about drinking coffee. The beat isn't the most interesting, but the overall idea is charming in an awkward way.
4/5 |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.10.21 | ^yeh Zorn did all his naked city grind shit with Eye. Happy dayz |
DadKungFu
05.10.21 | Coffee - Started out charming but by the midway point I was just waiting for it to end which is pretty impressive for a song that's under a minute.
2.3 |
Divaman
05.10.21 | Jack Stauber - The secondary vocals in this are cringy. But it IS about coffee, so that's a plus. 2.7 |
nol
05.10.21 | Self Destruct - This is good, I guess. [2.9]
I'd buy that for a Dollar - I'd buy this for like 30 cents [2.5]
AM 300 Tag - Chill, jazzy little hip hop beat. I liek. [3.2]
Auntie's Harp - Lots to unpack here. The percussion is groovy, but overall this feels like something that does a better job stitching tracks together than as a piece on it's own. [3.5]
Bonehead - This isn't a song. My masochistic side finds it hilarious tho. [3.0]
Coffee - Cute & coffee-infused, there's some genuinely good pop sensibilities here. also pretty annoying, tho. [3.1]]

fogza
05.11.21 | 11. Generational Divide - It's ok, but something about the vocals bothers me. 3.3 |
ieatbabies795
05.11.21 | This still needs two more songs! Get in |
dedex
05.11.21 | 11. Generational Divide - yeah i really don't like these vocals. 2.4 |
DadKungFu
05.11.21 | Started out great, Travis is still a stellar drummer but yeah like everyone else said the vocals were pretty tired and the song itself didn't really go anywhere.
3 |
ArsMoriendi
05.11.21 | "Generational Divide"
I already don't like pop punk and this is bottom of the barrel pop punk.
1.5/5 |
JesperL
05.11.21 | okay let's go, curious to see if i'll rate anything above a like 3.5 tbh lol
1. yea this is p whatever, 2.3
2. still p whatever but at least it has more edge haha get it, 3.0
3. not their best lol why does a 50 sec song have a 15 sec fadeout idk kinda funny, 3.2
4. whatever yea, 2.5
5. whatever yea but with more energy, 2.7
6. lil better ig, 2.9
7. reminds me of an uneventful lift ride which is not a good thing but also better than a lift ride that gets too eventful ig, 2.3
8. see the above but the lift ride is in like a fancy new hotel with maybe a plant or two inside so yay, 3.0
9. well the lift ride just got pretty damn hellish lol, 2.5
10. jk actually this type of lift ride is worse oh no why is this hipster lift sales person trying to get me to buy his new strain of organic weed espresso get me out of here help, 1.5
11. new blink is like an obligatory 2- and this is one of the more annoying new blink songs lol rip, 1.6
sorry 4 being mean |
Feather
05.11.21 | Spiral by Pinegrove :-) |
SlothcoreSam
05.12.21 | 6. I'd buy that for a dollar. 4.3, love this messy, noisy hardcore punk. Vocals remind me of The Eradicator.
7. Am 300. 3.0. Great intro, or a theme song to a sleazy dark downtown 70s New York detective TV show.
8. Aunties Harp. 2.6 It's an interlude this time, great but wouldn't call it a song.
9. Bonehead. 2.9 This would make a great montage of someone in psychosis losing their shit. Or a porn soundtrack for grasshoppers fucking.
10. Coffee, 0.2. it's bedroom pop written by preteens who are allowed to drink their hipster parent's mocha once a week
11. Generational Divide. 3.0 This is actually Blink 182's best song in almost 20 years, and that's a statement from a sloth that listens to 90% punk, but not this poser sellout shit.
12. Fertalizer. 0.1 You know what Fertalizer is made from, that's what this song is.
13. Do what you want. N/A Hey do what you want, but don't do it around me............ So many quotable lines from this song! I tear down the building just to pass through the door. YA HAY! |
DadKungFu
05.12.21 | Fertilizer - Hmmm a passable Stevie Wonder ripoff with some whack-ass lyrics. I don't hate it
2.7 |
Divaman
05.12.21 | One more song needed. |
ArsMoriendi
05.12.21 | 2 I thought? |
Divaman
05.12.21 | No, look 4 comments above. Feather has recommended Spiral by Pinegrove. (He forgot to provide a link, though.) |
fogza
05.12.21 | 12. Fertilizer - As with the previous song, I'm impressed that lyrically this ties up a concept in such an economical way. This does, unfortunately, just sound like one line of a verse recorded over a telephone call, and the spiritual successor of OutKast's silliest hook lyric. 2.5 |

05.12.21 | 12. Fertilizer - didn't care about it :[ 2.5 |

7. Am 300 Tag - nice, classy noir vibes. reminds me a bit of portishead. 3.7
8. Auntie's Harp - nice chill vibes, far from my favourite flying lotus though. 3.2
9. Bonehead - lol. 1.0
10. Coffee - Annoying. 2.0
11. Generational Devide - no, blink you haven't become better. 2.0
12. Fertilizer - Frank is bringing the soul. 4.0 |

Divaman
05.13.21 | >You crazy Americans will all say Monty Python is your favourite show and then shit on the Lillies, I just know it
Oh Doof. Please don't soil the good name of Monty Python by trying to associate them with the Tiger Lillies. They don't have all that much in common, other than both being British. |

"Do What You Want"
Yup this is punk. This isn't bad or anything, but nothing about it really stands out in a sea of punk. These vocals remind me of Blink-182 a little, which is a bad thing, but the song, on the whole, isn't awful.

05.18.21 | sir you have multiple Springsteen 5s |
fogza
05.18.21 | Who doesn't around these parts? |
Divaman
05.18.21 | By multiple you mean two, and yes, but only because they both absolutely deserved it.
Btw, apologies to those of you who rec'd those songs - I don't usually use language like "suck" out loud. I'm good with the concept that beauty is in the ear of the beholder. Or more honestly, I judge everyone's taste by how closely it matches my own, I assume that each of you does the same, and I'm fine with that.
(Note that on my own pick this month, there were a lot of questions about THOSE vocals, and I don't even entirely disagree with them -- I like the general style, but if you listen carefully enough, they kind of go out of sync with one another. But I didn't care, because under the limitations of the 1-minute format, it was the best I could come up with at the time.) |
fogza
05.18.21 | I'm totally psyched and ok with seeing my pick go down in flames. Although I'm gonna be bummed if Sam rates my track lower than 1 again, that was brutal. |
Divaman
05.18.21 | Yeah, those hurt. |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.18.21 | "they both absolutely deserved it"
okay but you don't rly have a leg to stand on here when it comes to highhorsing unmelodious singers who make a sound their own |
Divaman
05.18.21 | Sure I do. It depends on whether that sound of their own is bad enough to sterilize monkeys or not. Um, I mean it depends on how closely that sound of their own matches my own taste. |
fogza
05.18.21 | Melodiousness aside, I guess one could definitely call Bruce too earnest, but Matsuzaki's blank affect alien cuteness is more difficult for me to process |
Divaman
05.18.21 | I fully own that there are a lot of bands I like whose singers have questionable voices. I kind of like Geddy Lee, but getting there was liking drinking beer - it was an acquired taste. I fully understand why some people hate him. And if you've ever heard Larry Kirwan from Black 47, by any objective standards he's a horrible singer - he makes Springsteen sound like Pavarotti. But I like Black 47, and for me, his voice works for them. So if these guys like the Deerhoof Happy Days vocals and/or the screaming-like-my-genitals-are-on-fire hardcore vocals, I'm fine with that. But if they hate them, I'm fine with that, too.
|
Divaman
05.18.21 | Peppi Marchello of The Good Rats once said, talking about Meat Loaf, "That fat bastard -- he can't sing! He sounds like Pavarotti taking a shit!"

05.18.21 | "The Eyebright Bugler"
Is this the first song that isn't punk, metal, or a transition/intro. It's fluffy, light, and really pretty. I like how Deehoof can shift from being super weird to being super gorgeous. Good band, good song.

05.19.21 | 19. Music in My Mind Part 1 - Is this meant to mimic switching radio channels, or the intro check feature on your new stereo? Anyway, inoffensive library of the Jazz Liberatorz's favourite licks, but nary a song to be found. 2.5 |

Divaman
05.19.21 | Jazz Liberatorz - You guys know how I feel about jazz, so this one doesn't exactly have me quivering with excitement. Still, how much damage can they do in under a minute, right? - Yeah, this is just a bunch of soft jazz snippets. It's not painful, like some the entries this month. But it's also not a song. 2.0 |

05.20.21 | 20. JPEGMAFIA TYPE BEAT - I didn't really feel this but it did make me want context, so I listened to the album, and the album is a banger, and now I like this a bit better. 05.20.21 | Jazz Liberators - as per ushe, feels more like an interlude, but it's a nice interlude, inoffensive, but with some hints of personality 3.2
JPEGMAFIA - I don't mind it, it doesn't really do anything for me though or stand out as any kind of coherent piece of music other than as a showpiece for sheer abrasiveness 3.0 |

DadKungFu
05.23.21 | Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - Quite nice, actually, once again feels like an intro, but the elements all come together really well to the point that I don't really mind any sense of incompleteness. Bonus for strings that aren't just cheap hackwork.

ArsMoriendi
05.23.21 | "Music in My Mind Part 1"
Jazzy keys, funky bass, so far so good. Okay, now it's constantly changing. Is this an opening track? Regardless, it's not bad at all.
3.3/5
"JPEGMAFIA TYPE BEAT"
This is scary and abrasive, but also very original. This probably belongs as a Death Grips headliner or something. I actually was impressed by this.
3.6/5
"Fields, Woods, Time"
Pretty and chill so far. I like the strings and effects. This makes a good use of its limited time and feels full.
4/5
"Stel 1."
It's from 2003, but has very 90s indie vibes. Kinda generic honestly.
2.7/5
"AstrĂĄlnĂ Bytosti"
This feels pretty whole and is kinda interesting. Amateur vocals and some folky guitars. I think the fact there's 2 acoustic guitars makes it not boring, like there are some layers to it. I don't love it, but it's deff good.
