04.29.21 | This is one of the strangest lists so far and wow, those extended runners up are good - opinions? |
NorthernSkylark
04.29.21 | Needs S&G - Bridge over troubled water, VU - Sweet Jane and Vashti Bunyan - Diamond day. Otherwise, we’re good I think. |
DoofDoof
04.29.21 | 'Sweet Jane' is 1969? I hope so because it currently tops tomorrow's list ;)
I detest S&G for the most part unfortunately, sort of Elton John syndrome - find them cloying but I do like the occasional tune from them. Strongly dislike 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' though, but I get the appeal.
Vashti is blown out of the water by 8 in this list for me but again, I get that one and it's just a small details thing that I prefer the Perhacs album |
NorthernSkylark
04.29.21 | Sweet Jane is from the album loaded. It was released in 1970. |
NorthernSkylark
04.29.21 | I dislike Elton John and adore S&G. I don’t really see the connection there, but fair enough. 8 is beautiful too. I don’t know the last 2 entries...would I dig? |
DoofDoof
04.29.21 | Ah, I'm getting mixed up here yeah - I have 'Candy Says' in 69 but a google search says 'Sweet Jane' was released in '69 also...but I'm going by album release dates for the most part so an omission correctly identified :D |
DoofDoof
04.29.21 | The last two entries are intense let's just say that - religious epiphany stuff.
Both maybe an acquired taste but I'd say essential to give each at least one try.
The connection with S&G and Elton John for me is I can hear the talent but I find the way it's presented really unpleasant. I try not to dislike the people behind the music irrationally when I listen but something in the voices and maybe lyrics of some performers makes me cringe/dislike them - Elton, S&G, Chris Martin, etc
It might be an earnestness thing, esp with Chris Martin and S&G |

04.29.21 | The 70s is definitely the best decade for talent across the board.
4 is 1...possibly.
The Doors - Roadhouse Blues |
JKing92
04.29.21 | Black Sabbath - "Planet Caravan"
Derek and the Dominos - "Layla" |
DoofDoof
04.29.21 | Zak - The Doors maybe the most unfortunate band I’m probably not going to work down through the ‘60s, will probably stop at ‘69...maybe ‘68
JKing - ‘Planet Caravan’ is their greatest mellow tune 100%...couldn’t rank it higher than the t/t though |
CaliggyJack
04.29.21 | I count 4 album overlaps and one band overlap.
American Beauty is a damn good. Though I ended up choosing Workingman's Dead instead.
No Sweet Jane makes me sad :(
Is this your last one? |
DoofDoof
04.29.21 | Caliggy - '69 is one of my favourite years for music ;)
so that one is happening, '68 I have 10 songs I regard as classics, maybe a runner up or two but I'd need to revisit some albums to get more...and then further back it gets even more patchy
either Doof's world of music starts in '66 or '69 really, in terms of lots of things I like, but '69 definitely then we'll see - I do have my plans for the next series of lists per year lol - going to keep clogging up Sput for a few more weeks yet :D |
JKing92
04.29.21 | Jack is right. "Sweet Jane" is amazing, though I personally prefer "Who Loves the Sun." |
DoofDoof
04.29.21 | Yeah, not having a VU song on this list was more an oversight than anything...but then I'm quite happy obscure stuff like 8-10 made the cut |
Pheromone
04.29.21 | oh man i missed a lot of years |
NorthernSkylark
04.29.21 | Yeah you should prob have woken from your hibernation a handful of decades ago my little reptilian friend. |
wham49
04.29.21 | love the inclusion of 7 |
DoofDoof
04.29.21 | 7 is my favourite track from them so far - seems quite atypical for them? |
wham49
04.29.21 | My fave on the album is Box of Rain though |
DoofDoof
04.29.21 | will check again, album is good |
Yotimi
04.29.21 | 8 is an all timer for sure |
CaliggyJack
04.30.21 | Wham can sense when somebody mentions Grateful Dead. It's like a spider sense but for the Grateful Dead. |
