03.11.21 | Oye! Let’s discuss the most discussed band of all time. |
Demon of the Fall
03.11.21 | Nice. I agree with your general estimation of 1 and 7. Lovely Kid A write up. Truly incomparable album for me, for many reasons. |
zakalwe
03.11.21 | You’ve made a right hash of this one tec pal |
neekafat
03.11.21 | I Might Be Wrong?????!? |
neekafat
03.11.21 | "I still think the sequence could be improved, but “Burn the Witch” is the opener in every permutation." yes yes |
DocSportello
03.11.21 | Bonkers good list. Do I agree with everything here? Will *any* person, bless his heart, who’s felt the obsession? But holy fuck is it nice to see “I Can’t” with a gold star. It’s not a great Radiohead song but I love it, and seeing that has somehow made my day. I’ve always told people (and believed) that In Rainbows is their best, but I totally flip-flop all the time with these records. Good to see Amnesiac so high. Your illustration of its personality made me chuckle.
I hope that some day we get some “official,” streamable live shows. A nice, polished Bonnaroo ‘06 (especially on vinyl) would rule.
Also fingers crossed for LP10. Even though it’d probably be the end |
letsgofishing
03.11.21 | Kid A feels like the nuclear bombs just dropped, but you're too fucking blurred out on narcotics to even care. |
Rik VII
03.11.21 | Logged in just for this list heheh ... Incidently, I re-listened to their whole discography (including every b-side) over the last weeks, so my opinions on them are pretty fresh right now. And man, do I feel exactly the same about The Bends.
That said, A Moon Shaped Pool has grown a lot over time. It doesn't really stick out at first, but there's so much detail in every single track (like the production job in Ful Stop, the way sounds and instruments move in and out of the soundscape there, it's just insane. Godrich really wanted to show off in that one). I've really grown to love that album. One of their most consistent for sure.
Can't decide whether In Rainbows or Kid A is my favorite anymore, absolutely impossible.
Anyway, great write-ups as always! |
Rowan5215
03.11.21 | no Idioteque in your Kid A top 3? that's bonkers
props for having Amnesiac high and Bends low as it fuckin should be |
bigguytoo9
03.12.21 | Somewhere i'm notttttttttttttttt scaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatterbrain |
JKing92
03.12.21 | I'm one of those weirdos who'd put their three '90s albums at the top:
#1: OK Computer
#2: Pablo Honey (yes, really)
#3: The Bends
Feel free to laugh at me now. |
Winesburgohio
03.12.21 | The Bends is their worst |
JohnnyoftheWell
03.12.21 | props for having Amnesiac high and Bends low as it fuckin should be [2]
AMSP is too high and Kid A ain't quite all that, but otherwise this is p much a perfect ranking. extra props for bashing HTTT, but get Scatterbrain tf out of that re-tracklist - one of the blandest tracks in the universe, would have been a dud on the Bends lol |
Rowan5215
03.12.21 | nah Scatterbrain is a vibe. then again the man is obviously mad keeping We Suck Young Blood and cutting Wolf at the Door |
tectactoe
03.12.21 | @Demon: Thanks buddy. KID A rep 👊🏼
@zak: Thanks...i think... 😅
@neeka: That’d be #5 probably. “You and Whose Army?” would be fourth.
@Doc: Thanks man, and I agree- “I Can’t” is way overlooked. Even if it is the end, one more album would be great.
@octagon: God bless 🙏🏼
@fishing: I can see that... |
ArsMoriendi
03.12.21 | Amnesiac's my favorite and I like that score for it
|
tectactoe
03.12.21 | @Rik: Thanks! Glad to have pulled you out of retirement 😃 And yeah, Goodrich is a god and the production on “Ful Stop” is incredible.
@Rowan: It’s a goodie!!! Probably would be my next choice. But I’d struggle to place it above any of the three I picked 😬
@JKing: But do you like the rest of the albums?
@Wines: Can’t argue too much there bb
@Johnny: Thanks as always buddy (btw where’s that feature? 😉) but you know i cannot tolerate that KID A slander up in here!!!! And your Scatterbrained comment hurts, but then again I realize my choices from HttT are not the most popular choices.
@Rowan (again): THEMS THE BREAKS. But yeah Scatterbrained is great and Johnny should be either ashamed or burned at the stake. Perhaps both! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | Smdfdh |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | If johnny talks about radiohead one more time without being permabanned im swapping my vote for pheromone tbh |
tectactoe
03.12.21 | Ars: good man.
Pots: what’s making you cringe more, KOL at sixth or the fact that AMSP is above it? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | It's a joint effort |
ArsMoriendi
03.12.21 | Wait I just saw your HTTT retracking and you took off Backdrifts and kept We Suck Young Blood? wtf |
fogza
03.12.21 | I agree with 1 and 2. It's hard seeing HTTT languishing there at the bottom. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | Just noticed that to add insult to injury codex is ur top kol pick lmao |
JohnnyoftheWell
03.12.21 | Hey, Feral in the top 3 is strong karma |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | Not strong enough to forgive codex as 1 that's the most fucked up thing I've read all day and I saw the TI article |
tectactoe
03.12.21 | How can you love KOL and hate Codex simultaneously? This is a legitimate question. |
Pangea
03.12.21 | codex is a beauty, not quite my top pick of KoL, but it is up there
excellent list tec and great ranking. 1 is 1 for sure |
tectactoe
03.12.21 | Thanks Pang.
I guess I can see thinking Codex is sorta boring and lifeless if you vibe harder with KOL’s electronica vibes more. But its pared-down beauty is one of the things I like most about it.
Then again The National are one of my favorite bands so perhaps slow, sad-sack macabre-core is sorta my thing 🤷🏼♂️ |
Demon of the Fall
03.12.21 | OKC definitely hasn’t held up over time like Kid A has. In Rainbows has since overtaken it and one day I see Amnesiac doing the same, which is a bizarre thought to my much younger self.
It’s nice seeing more love for Amnesiac/TKOL and less for The Bends recently, maybe that’s just me but it appears to be a trend of sorts. |
Rowan5215
03.12.21 | TKOL was always fire it just took the more boring fans a while to catch up to it. it's cool tho |
Koris
03.12.21 | King of Limbs is underrated as hell, yeah |
tectactoe
03.12.21 | I think there’s a bit of operational exhaustion at work with OKC. I listened to that damn thing so much between, like, 2000 and 2006 that I burned myself out on it, and honestly would have put IN RAINBOWS and even AMNESIAC above it at one point. But as I’ve pumped the brakes on it recently and don’t listen to it nearly as often, every time I *do* decide to revisit it, it wholly delivers. I will say, though, that’s part of what makes KID A superior - I’ve never grown tired of that album, not for one second. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | Codex is a blemish on an otherwise near perfect album. Rh's piano ballads are always their worst songs and that is like the epitome of a boring radiohead piano ballad. Given what the rest of the album sounds like I'm not sure how its confusing that codex would be by far my least fav lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | Give up the ghost already serves a similar purpose of momentarily winding things down anyways, but is much better. Codex wedged in there just halts the momentum entirely. Song sucks ass |
tectactoe
03.12.21 | Well to be fair after that comment i reiterated that I could see not liking Codex if the rest of the album was 100% your vibe, which is basically what you just confirmed lol. We just happen to be diametrically opposed on reception to Radiohead’s piano ballads 😂
How do you feel about the live version of Like Spinning Plates? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | Oh sorry I didn't read the comments after that haha
I'll have to relisten and get back to you on that
But I have another opposing take for you to mull over:
Motion picture is the worst kid a song |
Pheromone
03.12.21 | where is jigsaw falling into place
motion picture is the best kid a song agreed pots |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | Yall basic |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | Awe |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | Ok the more I actually look at this list the more I realize that we have the most opposing radiohead tastes possible lmao
Life in a glasshouse is my least fav amnesiac track too lol |
Gyromania
03.12.21 | Exit music is so fucking overrated |
Pheromone
03.12.21 | Always knew you were a Pablo Honey lover pots |
Gyromania
03.12.21 | Pulk pull revolving door is the best amnesiac song too |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | Nah if there is one thing me and tec usually agree on its the book ends. Kid a is probably their best (its either that or in rainbows) and pablo is their worst. |
Gyromania
03.12.21 | Kid A and In Rainbows are def best yeah. Pablo and MSP are their worst |
Colton
03.12.21 | In Rainbows is a little overrated honestly. I feel like the “space rainbows” aesthetic makes it seem more interesting than it really is |
tectactoe
03.12.21 | ‘ Motion picture is the worst kid a song’
[tectactoe has left the chat.] |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | I dunno AMSP is a disaster but ill still take it over the bends |
Rowan5215
03.12.21 | High and Dry is the worst Radiohead song by fucking far. unbuttered milquetoast shit with a glass of room temp water |
GhandhiLion
03.12.21 | and it wears him ooout |
Feather
03.12.21 | sudowoodo is an all-around awful pokemon |
Feather
03.12.21 | list is about right, might flip flop Moon and Amnesiac and put In Rainbows Higher |
Demon of the Fall
03.12.21 | Kid A 5/5
In Rainbows 4.5/5
Ok Computer 4.3/5
Amnesiac 4.1/5
The King of Limbs 4/5
The Bends 3.6/5
Hail to the Thief 3.2/5
A Moon Shaped Pool 3/5
Pablo Honey 2/5
Maybe. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.12.21 | Sudowoodo is a tight pokemon |
tectactoe
03.13.21 | Sudo is all about dat dere defense.
Tbh I just like the character design and thought the fact that you had to squirt him with a water bottle to move him was cool 🤷🏼♂️
Demon: I dig it except for Moon, otherwise very acceptable and agreeable take.
Also Rowan who hurt you? |
Winesburgohio
03.13.21 | Kid A and Amnesiac emerged from the most fecund sessions in history i swear to god |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.13.21 | i like that he looks like tree but is rock |
Rowan5215
03.13.21 | tec my lovely fellow don't tell me you actually like that Keane-ass song Coldplay would be embarrassed to put on an album |
JohnnyoftheWell
03.13.21 | which one |
Pheromone
03.13.21 | > i like that he looks like tree but is rock
cracked me up |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.13.21 | High and Dry deffs has soft penis energy |
Rowan5215
03.13.21 | ok so I'm not just being a grumpy bastard itt @tec let's hear your favourite b-sides homie
I think Worrywort, Fog, Polyethylene, Paperbag Writer and 4 Minute Warning are up there with my favourite RH overall |
tectactoe
03.13.21 | This is too hard but I’ll try, Top 10 B Sides:
1. Down Is the New Up
2. These Are My Twisted Words
3. The Amazing Sounds of Orgy
4. How I Made My Millions
5. Up On the Ladder
6. The Butcher
7. Fog
8. Gagging Order
9. Spectre
10. Paperbag Writer
And Worrywort would be eleventh. Or could probably knock of their Spectre or Paperbag Writer depending on the day. |
Rowan5215
03.13.21 | don't really like Spectre but that's good shit otherwise
love Millions, should've been on the closer on OKC. don't @ me |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.13.21 | Ya spectre is bad. But at least u got butcher and these are my twisted words in there. Based on our disalignment im kinda shocked that Harry Patch song didn't make the cut cuz that's like my least fav rh song ever |
Feather
03.13.21 | @tec you are canceled for not having Last Flowers on that list |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.13.21 | Last flowers sucks |
Feather
03.13.21 | :( I have a soft spot for it. There was a great guitar tab for it back in the day and I still jam some of the chord progressions from it |
Rowan5215
03.13.21 | I really don't like how Thom sounds on Last Flowers lol. sounds like he's straining to even stay in that falsetto |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.13.21 | yeah i dunno it just goes nowhere and does nothing but yeah rh piano ballads do not often showcase what i personally consider to be the bands strengths at all
In Rainbows disc 2 is a mixed bag for me but Down Is The New Up is amazing, Up On the Ladder is good, Go Slowly is dec, Four Minute Warning is ok, and i lowkey honestly fucking love Bangers and Mash that song is fuckin jank in the best way |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.13.21 | Bangers + Mash sounds like it should have been on HTTT much more than In Rainbows tho |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.13.21 | "How do you feel about the live version of Like Spinning Plates?"
i just revisited it and it is good but i'm sure that it will come as no surprise that the album version is one of my fav songs on Amnesiac so an acoustic rendition never had a chance of winning out on the original for me |
Rowan5215
03.13.21 | Bangers + Mash is so stupid but it's one of their most fun dumb jams
I forgot about Ill Wind too, probably a top 3 song from those sessions |
Winesburgohio
03.13.21 | Worrywort tho |
tectactoe
03.13.21 | I was cold on Spectre for the longest time but at some point along the way it just clicked with me and I stopped viewing it in the context of the world’s worst film franchise and it sounds totally like something that could fit relatively well in the AMSP track list (which maybe explains why Pots hates it!!)
I do agree that LSP is one of AMNESIAC’s best (see list above) but I love the acoustic take on it, and how it sounds both so different and yet completely recognizable. But yeah the production is what makes the studio version so excellent and its absence is also apparent.
And Bangers + Rules. As does Worrywort (noted as my theoretical eleventh pick). So so many of the B sides I couldn’t list, like Talk Show Host, I Am a Wicked Child, Man of War, Ill Wind... Admittedly Radiohead just has too much solid material that any restrictive list is bound to omit a bunch of great stuff either way. |
Rowan5215
03.13.21 | hmm I ain't about that James Bond life but I think Star Wars has staked a solid claim for worst film franchise nowadays |
Rik VII
03.13.21 | "Admittedly Radiohead just has too much solid material that any restrictive list is bound to omit a bunch of great stuff either way."
Gotta rank their album cycles next then :P
Worrywort is fantastic, I love that one's soundscape. Sounds like some of Yorke's solo stuff, but better. I don't know any artist that matches their consistently high quality of b-sides, it's pretty insane. Not even Björk (although her Vespertine b-sides are probably my favorites ever). |
tectactoe
03.13.21 | As much as I love Bjork, too, I’d have to agree and give Radiohead the crown for most thoroughly great B sides collection. Or The Smiths, depending on how you define B sides and whether merely singles that never made it to full length albums count? Otherwise they’d definitely be in contention. |
onionbubs
03.13.21 | 8 n 6 need to be way higher and 2 should be way lower but props for amnesiac so high
and shoutout all the b side talk in the thread since a lot of those are incredible and have inspired many of my attempts at playlisting. fog/worrywort are my top |
tectactoe
03.13.21 | Glad to see all the love for both Fog and Worrywort. Didn’t realize they were so popular even among big Radiohead fans. Good shit.
I still do think The Amazing Sounds of Orgy is way underrated and/or overlooked though. If that had made the final track list for AMNESIAC, it might jump OKC on my list. |
HYPERVIOLET
03.13.21 | i cant stand radiohead aside from idioteque which i consider a masterpiece and creep is an alright bop |
tectactoe
03.14.21 | Interesting one-two punch there, not gonna lie. |
Demon of the Fall
03.14.21 | Interesting in that it’s one of their best songs coupled with one of their worst? |
tectactoe
03.14.21 | Not only that but also that the songs themselves are diametrically opposed. Like, he digs the two songs on the very extremes of Radiohead’s sound spectrum but hates everything in between lol. |
fogza
03.15.21 | I hate Radiohead apart from Like Spinning Plates, which is awesome, and Killer Cars is ok for when I'm doing laundry |
