Keeping in tradition with Danish black metal (Luciation, Sexdrome, etc...) NyreDolk is a two man ensemble who practices an incredibly raw form of black metal with a noticeable punk swagger. Tides of Fire
Though the Cascadian black metal scene has long since wilted away, there are a few acts that have endured the changing of seasons; Boreal, Stellar Descent, and my personal favorite of this triumvirate, With the End in Mind. As their second full-length, the four years between the release of their records, Unraveling; Arising - a fantastic record in its own right - has clearly been well spent, and Tides of Fire easily stands as the project's best release thus far. Valuing atmosphere and tension moreso than raw aggression Tides of Fire is an immersive experience that at times transcends your typical listening experience. This is most noticeable in the third and closing track, "Returning, Reclaiming" which opens with folksy strumming and tribal percussion, leading into shoegazing swells and eventually releasing in a tumult of necrotic croaks, blasting drums, and atmospheric riffing. It's a track you close your eyes for just let wash over you as a sea of emotive black metal surrounds you. | | 5 |  | Old Nick
The Night Of The Ambush . . .
If you're someone who has their ear close to the ground in the black metal scene, chances are you've at least heard mutterings of this project Old Nick, who since their formation just this year, has made great waves throughout the black metal underground thanks to the combination of their extremely lighthearted approach to the genre which is matched by their genuine talent in crafted superb raw black metal hymns. The Night of the Ambush is their 2nd LP and 8th release of the year and despite the obscene amount of material adheres to the high standard set by their previous releases. Anchoring their raw black metal onslaught with whimsical synths and a surprisingly keen sense of melody, The Night of the Ambush... is harsh, triumphant, and oddly comical all at once. Despite their eccentricities however the quality of the music speaks for itself, and I'm hard-pressed to find another project in black metal that excels in such an array of staples and oddities the way Old Nick does. | |
