This. That crowd have to make some small concessions, so not to appear indisputably sexist (or racist, or whatever). They can't go ahead and admit they dislike all female/black/gay characters. So they cite examples like Ripley, which are from classics that must surely predate all this modern virtue signalling, or examples safeguarded by the almighty canon, like Miles Morales.
I know for a fact that if Aliens came out now, they would tear Ripley to shreds, like they did with Rey in Star Wars. Same if in 2020 they decided to make Spiderman black. What's next?! The Hulk is trans?!?!! Iron Man is a vegan?!?!?!?!?!!!

If their gayness is mentioned only in passing, then it is a token gay character created to meet some diversity quota. Their gayness has no substance nor depth.
