CONTINENTAL RECFEST S4R5

CONTINENTAL RECFEST SEASON FOUR, ROUND FIVE. FIGHT! ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ RECAP: Congratulations to tyman128 for winning round four, that's two in a row! Round four focused on Australia. Two contestants were eliminated, Avagantamos and Sharkattack. Thanks for participating in season four! Please take a seat in the spectator lounge and help yourself to the free all-you-can-eat ribs and homemade root beer! ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ IN ROUND FIVE, the theme is JAPAN. Just Japan. Earn an additional 0.4 EXTRA POINTS if the album is from an ALL-FEMALE BAND. That means two or more members in the band, none of which are male. Does that mean it's a good idea to recommend an all-female band? Dude, I have no idea, but that +04 points can go a long way. To be clear, this is an incentive to make a tough choice, so if you find yourself down a dark alley and see a Hello Kitty cosplayer snorting coke off Sailor Moon's backside... make a tough choice. ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ Most importantly, but not a requirement: im getting attacked here wtf. next time ill go through all of your high rankings and submit all the eligible ones at once so that you have to do more research

Some good black metal elements, even more than the post-hardcore elements, imo. I liked the variety and the quality song structures. Good production without being too polished.

This album was hard to get my hands on. I had to put together a playlist from Youtube and still I couldn't find the last two songs anywhere. Even so, I think I got a good enough idea of their sound to form a complete opinion of the album. It was a rockin', fun playthrough. The vocals reminded be of Shuntaro Okino (the Last Exile opening theme song), which is definitely a good thing. It was good on the first listen, but it was an experience that felt finished, and I didn't get anything else out of it from the second listen.

I thought I was going to have to 1.5 this after the first song, but luckily the sound changed drastically. Holy shit track #1 can die in a fire, that was rough. The vocals were basically oji-san Yakisoba who had too many drinks and started croaking out frog sounds at karaoke night to an instrumental track. The rest of the album went hard. Vocals were beatdown-style brutal and enjoyable. I liked the heavy feedback on the guitars being used intentionally and rhythmically in "Stray Dog." Very enjoyable album, but still left me wanting something more from it.

I can't even tell this is Japanese by listening. It's very modern and American-friendly. It's also very, very good. Toppest-notch production with some really fun sounds plugged in throughout the album. It's not overdone at all, so it just gives it a lot of flavor and keeps every song fresh. I can't tell for sure, but I think a majority of the drums were programmed, which doesn't bother me a bit... especially for this style of (progressive?) metalcore. The clean vocals were stunning, esp. in "Agony," and I could have gone for even more of that like, "Ooo." Then they brought down like, "Ooo!" so it sounded like, "Ooo!" ........."Ooo."

Did not like. The vocals made me wince in pain. They were so bad. Even the production was pretty poor, so the drums came through like a streetlight crashing into a windshield. CRASH CRASH CRASH! The only thing that had any value on this album for me was the true swanning guitarwork. It really got lost behind the car crash, though.

Doom metal band from Osaka
I'm always excited to check out doom, because I like it in theory... but the bands usually suck. Corrupted was good. I checked out what they had available on Spotify, and that material was garbage in comparison, so I'm glad this album was the rec, even if I had to go to YouTube for it. There was a lot of post- influence on the record, as in post-metal and post-rock. It gave the album plenty of breathing room to keep be involved the whole way through. Good stuff.

ALL CHIX NO DIX +0.4 points
I have conflicted feelings about this album. I really, really liked the vocals and the way the band interacted with one another vocally. It made it fun. One of the girls' voices almost had an addictive quality to it. The conflicted part of my feelings is toward the energy and flow of the album. I really don't have the capacity for this style of music in large quantities. It's a very demanding album. Very distracting and very draining. While this honestly is an objectively good quality, it left me drained, even after enjoying the songs.

Shoegaze band from Tokyo
This very overtly shoegaze band does justice to the genre. Sounds are foggy and glossy, guitar is repetitively catchy (but not overdone), and the vocals are crystalline clean. Nothing to complain about here.

+0.2 points from winning previous round
I didn't really love the vocals on this. And every time the songs started leading somewhere intriguing, hinting at something epic, they passed right by it: for example, "Glass Skin" @ 2:30, "Reiketsu Nariseba" @ 2:20. It essentially gave the album an underdeveloped feel. Besides that, the songs, even individually, didn't feel cohesive. It felt like the band members each played their own parts separately and didn't know what the songs would sound like when it was done. Which actually sounds kind of cool in concept. But it didn't translate here. No pun intended.
