Dewinged
09.06.20 | 1962, space themed? Ummmmmm... |
Dewinged
09.06.20 | I am gonna skip the 1962 handicap cause it's basically impossible but I'll get you smth spacey. |
bloodshy
09.06.20 | I'll be surprised if someone gets the 0.5 points. |
Sharkattack
09.06.20 | Ya is it cumulative if it’s before 1962? Like do you get .7? Or is it basically +.3? |
porcupinetheater
09.06.20 | Fucking badass theme damn |
bloodshy
09.06.20 | @sharkattack +0.5 altogether. if you want to think of it as 0.2 + 0.3, that works too
@porcupine thanks man |
porcupinetheater
09.06.20 | To Sun Ra or not to Sun Ra |
bloodshy
09.06.20 | sleep on it. it's been like 15 minutes |
budgie
09.06.20 | boop |
bloodshy
09.06.20 | budgie, you know exactly what i like |
Avagantamos
09.06.20 | gospel - the moon is a dead world
post-hardcore/screamo/prog rock band from NYC (2005) |
bloodshy
09.06.20 | gotta be band name or lyrical theme, sorry. album title is not allowed |
LeddSledd
09.06.20 | King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Infest the Rats' Nest (2019)
Thrash metal record from Australian genre-hoppers KGatLW. Lyrical themes include Elon Musk taking all the rich people to Mars and everyone else on Earth fucking dying of coronavirus or burning up in a spaceship in Venus' atmosphere. That's not a joke btw |
Avagantamos
09.06.20 | but the album you used as an example in slot 1 of the list is formatted the same way. the album title is the space reference in powerman 5000 - tonight the stars revolt |
Avagantamos
09.06.20 | also how would you know about the lyrical themes? most of the lyrics aren't found online |
LeddSledd
09.06.20 | https://genius.com/albums/Powerman-5000/Tonight-the-stars-revolt |
Avagantamos
09.06.20 | fair enough. I shall find something more fitting! |
SteakByrnes
09.06.20 | Gonna sleep on this and get back with a rec soon, glad you liked Souvenirs so much tho! |
Deez
09.06.20 | Cave in- jupiter
|
Trifolium
09.06.20 | Haha, nice theme! Let's see, which of the thousands of space themed albums am I going to choose... (... I wish!) |
Trifolium
09.06.20 | Gustav Holst - The Planets
An orchestral suite based on the planets that were known at the time (so no Pluto here). It's incredibly imaginative. From 1916. |
budgie
09.06.20 | trif i already recd that album (look above) |
LeddSledd
09.06.20 | wait a minute... 🤔 |
Trifolium
09.06.20 | Oh no!!!!!!! Great idea budgie hahahahahaha! It would definitely have been a winner.
In that case:
The Seatbelts - Cowboy Bebop
Amazing soundtrack from an amazing 90s animation series about a group of bounty hunters in space. Perfect perfect perfect also if you haven't seen the series go check it out it's incredible. |
budgie
09.06.20 | hmmmmmmm trif i think that one's been taken unfortunately |
Avagantamos
09.06.20 | deltron 3030 - deltron 3030
experimental/abstract hip hop with lots of lyrics about intergalactic wars, escaping on space shuttles, living on space stations, etc. |
Uzumaki
09.06.20 | Burnt By the Sun - Soundtrack to the Personal Revolution |
Sharkattack
09.06.20 | Oh man what a twist! Ima think for a bit. Got a few ideas... still don’t understand your taste...am scared... |
tyman128
09.06.20 | So I'm not sure how much of a stretch this is, but I'll give my argument for it:
Psychonaut - Unfold the God Man
1- the name is a play on Astronaut... so outer spacey
2- they use a lot of interstellar, outer space imagery throughout their songs with references to deities or complexity of origin... so I think that would work
Let me know because that's all that comes to the top of my head right now |
tyman128
09.06.20 | and I only just now realized you have that rated so disregard everything I just said |
tyman128
09.06.20 | You know what, Imma go with
Starset - Transmissions
Should be interesting to see what you think of it |
Divaman
09.06.20 | Hmm. There are a couple of different ways I could go on this one. Gonna have to think about it. |
Dewinged
09.06.20 | K, I am gonna go with smth very out of your comfort zone, but if space is what you want...
Pretty Maids - Future World (look at that fucking cover!)
Metal, hard rock from Denmark (80s) |
Trifolium
09.06.20 | Hahahahahaha buuuuudggiiiiiieeeeeeeeeee ooommmggggggggg |
Trifolium
09.06.20 | Did you really rec Holst before? Because that one would totally be my pick yes yes yes. But you must have chosen that one too... |
Sniff
09.06.20 | Budgie out here cheating. Ban him! |
Trifolium
09.06.20 | Yes he's totally crazy cheating!!! |
Sniff
09.06.20 | so no earth crisis then? rip |
porcupinetheater
09.06.20 | Edit: For your convenience, Bloodshy, this was a false start suggestion. What was here before is naught but carrion. |
Sniff
09.06.20 | Just want to pick Sun Kil Moon but also you know. Don't want to do that anymore |
Sniff
09.06.20 | Aight I'm going out on a high note.
Artificial Brain - Infrared Horizon |
porcupinetheater
09.06.20 | Actually fuck it, scratch Suis la Lune, I’ll shoot my jazzy shot
The Comet is Coming - Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery |
bloodshy
09.06.20 | God damn this is going to be a labyrinth figuring out what you guys are actually recommending.... maybe I should read the comments backwards. I might not update after work, I'm probably passing out when I get home. |
bloodshy
09.06.20 | Also, Trifolium, I'll be using your first rec unless I hear otherwise. |
bloodshy
09.06.20 | I know what I would rec me. Can't believe I haven't rated any of this artist/band. |
tyman128
09.06.20 | alright, I'm making my official rec right here, this is it
SeeYouSpaceCowboy - The Correlation Between Entrance and Exit Wounds |
Colton
09.06.20 | “colton, maybe just respect other people's tastes and rec something that you think they might like instead of what you like”
Am I supposed to analyze all your ratings and deduce what your taste is before reccing something? Lol |
Trifolium
09.06.20 | We'll need to wait for budgie, he has to say whether he did indeed rec Holst first, or whether it was just a joke. |
Sharkattack
09.06.20 |
“Am I supposed to analyze all your ratings and deduce what your taste is before reccing something? Lol”
Yes that’s pretty much how every rec tournament goes unless stated otherwise. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.20 | Yea it's a rookie mistake to not rake through the host's ratings to see what they like lol |
Colton
09.06.20 | I guess I don’t really get the purpose of a recfest then. How is it fun for anyone else other than the host? |
SteakByrnes
09.06.20 | I mean you can rec whatever you want but if you want to win then maybe cater to their tastes while still stretching the boundaries and making them go out of their comfort zone. Sometimes it doesn't work but like whatever, it's not the end of the world lol |
LeddSledd
09.06.20 | Yeah that's what I've been doing. I haven't used anything other than his chart as a basis for my recs lol |
Sharkattack
09.06.20 | Parliament-Mothership Connection |
budgie
09.06.20 | trif is was most def a joke! |
Trifolium
09.06.20 | Hahahaha! I knew the second one was,
but the first one had me all confused 😵☘
But it wasn't weird to expect you actually recommended Holst budgie.
In that case: My entry is definitely Gustav Holst - The Planets. |
Uzumaki
09.06.20 | Can't wait to hear/read his reaction to Gustav Holst. It's a gorgeous suite and i had the pleasure of hearing it performed live years ago; loved every minute of it. |
Sniff
09.06.20 | Was gonna rec Holst but was too late |
Divaman
09.06.20 | For me, the fun of a recfest is trying to pick a song that matches the host's taste enough to not get me eliminated but doesn't make me feel like I need to take a shower after rec'ing it. Of course, after a few rounds, I usually just say eff it and rec something I like even if the host might not like it, which gets me eliminated. |
budgie
09.06.20 | you guys have fun? |
Divaman
09.06.20 | Loosely speaking. |
Divaman
09.06.20 | OK, here we go. I was going to rec you the first Walk the Moon LP, but nothing in your rating list suggested you have any interest in their style of indie pop. And if you were still offering a bonus for punk, I might have gone with The Space Robot Scientists' first album. I even loosely considered taking the smaller bonus and recing you a Jefferson Starship album. But in the end, my choice was: |
Divaman
09.06.20 | Zia (US) - Big Bang!
https://ziaspace.bandcamp.com/album/big-bang |
Divaman
09.06.20 | This was a good choice for this round, bloodshed, although I was hoping we went to Australia next. I feel like I have a rec I know for sure you'll like there. |
budgie
09.06.20 | how's your daughter diva |
Sniff
09.06.20 | ugh jefferson starship would've been a good pick too |
Trifolium
09.06.20 | Sorry Sniff!
And me too Uzumaki, very curious! It's such an incredible piece yeah. Forever speaking to the imagination. |
Divaman
09.06.20 | She's good, budgie. We watched the wrestling ppv together last night. |
Minushuman24
09.06.20 | Aw, that is sick diva! AEW? |
Colton
09.06.20 | Diva literally admits to child kidnapping and you guys praise him for it? That’s messed up |
budgie
09.06.20 | we support diva unquestionably, in all things |
LeddSledd
09.06.20 | Child kidnapping is pretty based 😎 |
Divaman
09.06.20 | Yep. AEW. Don't tell her, but part of her birthday present next week is some AEW merch - an Orange Cassidy shirt and towel, and a Darby Allin shirt. |
Divaman
09.06.20 | Child kidnapping? I deny it wholeheartedly. Although I do with agree with Dave Atell's statement -- there's nothing like the expression on the face of a young child ... when you first take him out of your trunk. |
Colton
09.06.20 | AEW? How many times did she try to escape? |
Divaman
09.06.20 | I suspect she's older than you are, Colton, and I'm not that fast. If she'd wanted to escape, she would have been gone by the time I got out of my recliner. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.20 | The Contortionist - Exoplanet |
bloodshy
09.08.20 | @steakb contortionist is out, already fived one of their albums... would have been a good rec though.
i'm gonna check out the rest of the recs to make sure they are up to snuff and update the list. hopefully get some listening in tonight! |
bloodshy
09.08.20 | @deez, cave in - jupiter is out... left you a detailed reason in your shoutbox |
SteakByrnes
09.08.20 | Wait really that's a rule? It's vastly different to Clairvoyant, but I guess I'll find something else then |
bloodshy
09.08.20 | thanks, i appreciate it... i just dont want people using my fives and reccing the albums i haven't rated. it feels too easy. and there are a lot of those to choose from lol |
SteakByrnes
09.08.20 | You should still check it out regardless ;] |
Uzumaki
09.08.20 | Intrinsic and Language are better than Exoplanet IMO |
Deez
09.08.20 | ok (its called JUPITER FFS)
Nephlim modulation systems - Imperial letters of protection
2 Aliens from outta space on earth to spread truth. (Half of company flow) |
bloodshy
09.08.20 | i'm pretty sure i skimmed over exoplanet, but whenever i'm in the mood for contortionist, i always go back to clairvoyant. definitely need to listen to the whole thing though. i'll add it to my jukebox list |
SteakByrnes
09.08.20 | The Faceless - Planetary Duality |
bloodshy
09.08.20 | got it, just waiting on budgie and someone. unless budgie wants to steal trifolium's seat belts rec for real. |
bloodshy
09.08.20 | @TRIFOLIUM
Is there a specific recording you want me to listen to? I'm lost in space.
If you have a Spotify link, that would be ideal. All the albums look the same. |
Trifolium
09.08.20 | Hmm yes, I'm looking it up now. Don't know whether it's on Spotify, in that case I'll have to do some listening first... |
Trifolium
09.08.20 | Yesssss, it's on Spotify! I bought this version when I was 15 or so, it also has John Williams on it (Close Encounters and Star Wars) because he was majorly influenced by Holst. Of course you don't have to listen to those, I'm only reccing the The Planets part.
https://open.spotify.com/album/6Tyl0PfSo9hpB38SxbS3ao?nd=1&nd=1 |
bloodshy
09.08.20 | Thanks bud. I didn't want to do you a disservice by listening to a small town high school orchestra version or something. |
Trifolium
09.08.20 | Hahahaha yeah that's a great point. I've sometimes heard versions that I really didn't like at all, but I love this one!! Really curious what you think of it! |
porcupinetheater
09.09.20 | Still some album electoral holdouts, in the SPACE round, on Sputnikmusic.com. No brand consistency. |
Trifolium
09.09.20 | Pretty strange, agreed... |
bloodshy
09.09.20 | i'll message them, but if they don't come back, i'll figure something else out |
porcupinetheater
09.09.20 | Pick one of Budgie’s 3s. Full circle while we’re only halfway through the circle |
Divaman
09.09.20 | I mentioned it on the casual conversation list in a post to budgie, so I'm guessing he saw it, and hopefully someone did as well. |
Colton
09.09.20 | do you not support small town high school orchestras Bloodshy? |
someone
09.09.20 | Jim Sullivan - U.F.O.
a guy wrote an album about getting abducted by aliens and then disappears without a trace few year later |
Divaman
09.09.20 | Ok. Now if we can just get our favorite bird man to fly our way, we'll be good to go. |
bloodshy
09.09.20 | lol colton, i don't go anywhere near high schools, and not even for legal reasons. |
budgie
09.09.20 | am thinking rn |

09.11.20 | It's going to be hard for bloodshy to come back down to Earth after this group. |
porcupinetheater
09.11.20 | And the nail-biting tension continues rising |
Dewinged
09.11.20 | I'm going out in this round, almost on purpose, so no surprises |
porcupinetheater
09.11.20 | This is definitely my fuck it, let’s see what happens round agreed |
bloodshy
09.11.20 | sorry i'm not done with this yet... i've been almost done for three days, but i've been practically bedridden with a headache for the last two days. i'll see what i can get done now |
porcupinetheater
09.11.20 | This is just a cool thing for us. It’s a lot more effort and maintenance on your end. Take absolutely all the time you need, blood, and hope you’re feeling better. |
bloodshy
09.11.20 | I'm feeling good enough right now, thanks.
Not sure if you guys read the blurbs or not, but I tried to have fun with a couple of them. |
porcupinetheater
09.11.20 | Can’t be skipping any blurbs from the whiz/wise kid that brought us the thorough and educational Swancore list. |
Trifolium
09.11.20 | Dude I'm so loving your blurbs!!!!! Also the waiting makes this comp more fun actually haha, the hype is real and I'm very scared every time this thread is bumped. Love it!!! |
Uzumaki
09.11.20 | ^^^ same, really. I know I’m out this round tho. |
bloodshy
09.11.20 | The scores are lower all around this round, so everyone should be very afraid. |
someone
09.11.20 | you ask for niche criteria, you get hit or miss results |
Uzumaki
09.11.20 | Well, we tried our best... |
bloodshy
09.11.20 | very true, someone.
just trying to get everyone excited... results should be in within the hour. |

09.11.20 | The biggest surprise here for me was The Comet Is Coming... I fully expected to eliminate it, but it was awesome. |
Sniff
09.11.20 | It owns yes |
Sharkattack
09.11.20 | Kind of surprised I survived but also not at all because if you don’t like mothership connection you don’t wanna get funked up... or something... |
bloodshy
09.11.20 | lol shark, you've been playing it balls to the wall the whole time. |
Deez
09.11.20 | Glad you digged it man! |
porcupinetheater
09.11.20 | Stoked that you dug Comet, too. Definitely cool as fuck record, uses them jazz elements to wind up someplace astral that don't feel all that jazz |
bloodshy
09.11.20 | @deez, for sure, it was a listen i never would have experienced without the rec
@porcupine, yeah... i've been looking for some good jazz for quite a while. i like the instruments, but i'm not a fan of faux-improv jam sessions |
Uzumaki
09.11.20 | Death metal?!? |
bloodshy
09.11.20 | apparently no one else thinks it's death metal, but that's what i heard |

SteakByrnes
09.11.20 | owned |
porcupinetheater
09.11.20 | Can we retroactively apply a +0.5 thrash bonus for Ledd, and still unceremoniously boot him from the premises? |
LeddSledd
09.11.20 | don't patronize me >:[ |
bloodshy
09.11.20 | i wrote a weird blurb for it because it was nicer than the other stuff i would have said |
LeddSledd
09.11.20 | No biggie, some people are able to handle the greatness of King Gizz and others aren't :^) |
Divaman
09.11.20 | Personally, my favorites are "Nibiru" and "Plastic", but I like "Space Man" too. |
Trifolium
09.11.20 | Yipppeeeeee I lived!!!
Thanks Gustav, I'll throw Jupiter on in your honour. |
tyman128
09.11.20 | I mean... I knew you were gonna like my rec but I had absolutely no clue that it would win
glad you enjoyed it that much! |
bloodshy
09.11.20 | my own personal rule is if something is a 4.5, i have plans to listen to it again. 4.0, i'll add it to my library in case i'm ever in the mood, but probably won't listen again. 3.5 or lower, it was maybe good for a single listen, but with all the amazing music out there, i'll probably avoid it. so this means 5 of these recs made it into my actual (large) rotation
do you guys have personal rules like that? it helps me stay organized so i can remember what to listen to again |
Dewinged
09.11.20 | "how does it feel being dead dewi???????"
Liberating! |
Trifolium
09.11.20 | I have the same system almost bloodshy, but my 'good enough to buy' threshold (I'm a CD man!) starts at 3.5. 5.0s are reserved for those ultra-special 4.5 with which I've built a special emotional connection over time.
So I think on average I rate a little lower than you do. A 3.0 is enjoyable, but I won't listen to it much (perhaps save for the odd track). |
LeddSledd
09.11.20 | @bloodshy idk, there are plenty of 3.5s and occasionally 3's that'll go into my rotation for whichever reason. music's too fluid for me to judge too much off of first impressions or a Sputnik score - typically two listens gives me a solid opinion on an album unless i felt really confident i got everything out of it that I could have on the first
plus you have more 4.5s than I do ratings in total, so i'll gander that you're a bit more liberal with the higher scores than I am |
bloodshy
09.11.20 | might be true. 2.5 for means it does nothing for me, or is neutral... 5 for me means it's perfect, or at least it has rounded up to a perfect score... so i think on average i might just be more easily pleased by music, rather than rate higher. it's tough to tell without getting in each others' heads though...
in general, i find most music good, especially what i seek out and actually listen to |
porcupinetheater
09.11.20 | I just 1 slam death and 5 everything else |
Divaman
09.11.20 | In the SOTD contest, if I rate a song 3.5 or higher, it means I'll buy it for my iPod. |
bloodshy
09.11.20 | jesus, how different! i think one of the problems is "superb" "excellent" and "great" all have the same value to me as far as words go. so i tend to ignore this and do my own mathematical approval. i think sputnik wants to really stretch your favorites into separate score brackets, but i refuse to do that. if anyone asked me from any of my 5's, "is that one of your favorite albums ever?" i could easily say yes. having said that, i could separate them all into three brackets, 4.8's, 4.9's, and true 5's |
Trifolium
09.11.20 | Yeah for sure. And if you think about it, 2.5 is called 'average', whereas the mean rating is 3.0. This has always been confusing to me. |
bloodshy
09.11.20 | it hurts my brain |
porcupinetheater
09.11.20 | Agreed, ratings are just kind of a gut thing. Popping a number on something feels kind of meaningless anyway, but it’s nice to have the collected library visible and aint no other way to do that here. Kind of gauge it on a “how’re the stomach butterflies doing” scale from dead to building a utopian society. |
LeddSledd
09.11.20 | it's not a perfect system for sure, but i like the organization of it and, like porcupine said, a collected library of what i've listened to. my previous method of keeping track of albums was whatever I saved on my Spotify lol. I like being able to quantify my enjoyment of something into a number, even if two albums that have a 3.5 might not be in the same level of enjoyment or quality to me - music is too fluid and dissimilar to have an actual concrete rating
@Trif that's weird to me too. the 1-10 scale works better but 1-5 is good for a music site like this. if it were just halves there would be an official 0.5 rating, but that's probably too tempting to abuse |
Divaman
09.11.20 | I think about like this, Tri. 2.5 is average, but my mean is a little higher than 3, because I'm good at guessing what albums I'll probably like, and I don't bother with albums I think I probably won't. So must of the albums I listen to and rec tend to be higher than 3's for me. The sample of stuff I listen to and rate skews higher than it would if you just gave me fifty random albums and asked me to rate them. |
bloodshy
09.11.20 | wait, do you consider "average" to be your average score, or an average-quality album? |
Divaman
09.11.20 | An average quality album. |
bloodshy
09.12.20 | interesting, me too |
budgie
09.12.20 | hey you leave diva alone |
Divaman
09.12.20 | I'm alone. |
bloodshy
09.12.20 | ... i didn't mean anything negative by it? just trying to compare how we all rate, digging a little to see if i can figure out the reasons |
Trifolium
09.12.20 | Yeah that sounds reasonable Diva. I also tend to evade the ones that I would hate the most. |
