Madbutcher3
07.31.20 | good list although obvs would put holdsworth on it and maybe some of the good hard rock lead guys like matthias jabs or something idk |
ReefaJones
07.31.20 | "where tf are eddie van halen & buckethead"

ReefaJones
07.31.20 | "Seriously? This is some old shit. Honestly, I wholeheartedly disagree with this list."
Ok Zoomer |

JustJoe.
07.31.20 | 3 is ❤️ |
Jots
07.31.20 | dunno who mine are but I feel like this sorta ballpark needs Marc Ribot, p underappreciated player generally |
Sharkattack
07.31.20 | The only person mentioned here that should be considered a top guitarist is Marc Ribot. |
Jots
07.31.20 | interesting Mike Dirnt profile pic too, didn’t know he was bulking |
Sharkattack
07.31.20 | Well and Hendrix. What’s he doing so low by the way? |
LeddSledd
07.31.20 | what the fuck is Brian May doing on this list??? |
ReefaJones
07.31.20 | @JDubb
Gales and Govan are post 83
@Sharkattack
There's no order to this list |
ReefaJones
07.31.20 | @LeddSledd
please explain |
LeddSledd
07.31.20 | @Reefa i have yet to understand the praise or adoration that people have for him. as far as i can tell he's a guitarist in a wildly popular band so that must mean he's one of the best of all time, or something |
LeddSledd
07.31.20 | Eric Gales and Guthrie Govan, that's who |
ReefaJones
07.31.20 | @LeddSledd
Bad Take tbh. May is awesome. Just so happens to have played in one of the most popular bands of all time
@JDubb
Probably the two greatest guitarists of our age |
Sinternet
07.31.20 | robert johnson and mississippi john hurt are honorable mentions i assume |
LeddSledd
07.31.20 | @Reefa he had like three really cool solos buuuuuut that's it. the rest on this list have dozens of shining examples of their guitar work |
ReefaJones
07.31.20 | @LeddSledd
agree to disagree |
Jots
07.31.20 | Brian May is a bit 🌽 I do declare yea |
porcupinetheater
07.31.20 | Technicality ain’t everything, list needs some tone-psycho representation
Gareth Liddiard
Thurston Moore & Lee Ranaldo
Nick Sadler
Not that they don’t got chops |

07.31.20 | Awesome list ReefaJones.
Happy to see; Al DiMeola/John McLaughlin/Fripp/Lifeson/Gilmour, in here.

08.01.20 | Jason Richardson
Tosin
Bucket
Vai
Jim Matheos |
evilford
08.01.20 | Warez da metul |
SitarHero
08.01.20 | Obvs Guthrie is the know it all. Dude is a walking guitar encyclopaedia. |
EoinCofa
08.01.20 | Speaking of Guthrie; where is Nick Johnston? I know, he’s still too young. Dude is an absolute beast! |
MillionDead
08.01.20 | Solid ass list. Was very excited to see Joe Pass mentioned. I think Wes Montgomery is definitely comparable to Django and Joe. I think Steve Vai is an obvious choice that’s missing. I’d probably add Luc Lemay, Glenn Branca, Thurston Moore, Lee Ronaldo, David Davidson, Blixa Bargeld, Rob Marten, Chuck Schuldiner, Paul Masvidal, Johan Wieth, Hasjarl from Deathspell Omega, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Kurt Ballou, Ted Greene and Sonny Sharrock off the top of my head. |
conesmoke
08.01.20 | Alanis Morissette |
MillionDead
08.01.20 | Duane Denison, Keiji Haino, Otomo Yoshihide, & Derek Bailey |
YoYoMancuso
08.01.20 | allan holdsworth |
ReefaJones
08.01.20 | Steve Vai is a great player but terrible song writer. I don't really care much for the shredder type |
Sunnyvale
08.01.20 | Cool list, love me some Mark Knopfler though |
EoinCofa
08.01.20 | @Reefa try Jared James Nichols |
bloc
08.01.20 | Your nicknames are gold |
alamo
08.01.20 | 1. buckethead
2. brian patrick carroll
3. death cube k |
MillionDead
08.01.20 | I mean Vai is far far more than just a shredder. I thought of him that way for a long time myself but I was wrong. I mean he came up working for and learning from Zappa himself.
Oh and Adam Rodgers and Julian Lage are some newer jazz guys that will go down as greats. Scott Hull from Pig Destroyer is like the most creative and prolific with his riffs of like anyone I’ve heard. |
Sharkattack
08.01.20 | Kid Congo Powers |
porcupinetheater
08.01.20 | Wait a dadgum segund, where’s Eddie Hazel |
farmerobama
08.01.20 | Damn that's a white list. What about B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson? |
MillionDead
08.01.20 | Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy, too. |
ReefaJones
08.01.20 | @farmerobama
I considered King but he ultimately didn't make it. These are just my picks and what I listen to. |
MillionDead
08.01.20 | Dr. Know from goddamn Bad Brains is one of my GOATS too. And I'm surprised no one's mentioned Prince yet. |
rockandmetaljunkie
08.01.20 | You only made that list cause you haven't heard me playing ;) |
ReefaJones
08.01.20 | Prince is great but certainly not "top 20 of all time" great |
MillionDead
08.01.20 | Have you heard Prince's SONGS? I think there's definitely an argument for him as a great. It's also hard to objectively qualify greatness cause certain people look for different things. |
ReefaJones
08.01.20 | Have I heard Prince's songs? What kind of question is that. Sign O' The Times is one of my favorite albums. Just because I didn't put someone in this list doesn't mean I don't like them or haven't heard them. There are a million guitarists out there. Just because they didn't make a top 20 doesn't mean they suck lol |
MillionDead
08.01.20 | lol A rhetorical question. That kind. I just mean that a lot the instrumentation, including the guitarwork, parts that he wrote, was perfect. |
nuklearmoose
08.02.20 | Jimmy Herring is a legend too. Gotta put Derek Trucks up there as well, I think he's very well rounded, and not just a Duane Allman clone, as he has a lot of world music influence/eastern style music |
wham49
08.03.20 | 1 is 1
Anybody Who disagrees will be directed to Beck’s Belero for clarification |
neekafat
08.03.20 | lol |
