Umbrella Contest 2020 Round 9: Little Umbrellas

2 more out, 9 still in!
1Herbie Hancock
Head Hunters

1. Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is jazz! Swing, bebop, modal jazz, jazz fusion, free jazz, nu-jazz, jazz rap, jazzcore. Anything jazz, man! Even clarinet jazz!

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Tuesday night, so if you're late, you're out.

“Not Messing Around”

Country rocky soloing so far, okay. The organ in the background is pretty cool. Lots of electric guitar soloing, juxtaposed with acoustic backing. It weirdly makes me think of grunge too for some reason. This is pretty good, but I don’t love it or anything.

3.5/5 (Passed to next round)
3The Jayhawks
Hollywood Town Hall

“Waiting for the Sun”

“Sweet Home Alabama” piano? Okay, not quite. I’m 90% sure this guy is a Neil Young fan with those vocals. Honestly, this is very enjoyable. The guitar, drums, and piano all catch my ear. Bass? In the background unfortunately, but hey do I really expect great bass from a country song? Not the most original song ever, but quite good anyway.

3.6/5 (Passed to next round)

“Honey Don't”

I know The Beatles version of this haha, but this is automatically way cooler. Wow, this is abrasive and bassy, but still clearly country. This is amazing though, what the hell. Dissonant violin, smooth jazz, weird guitar shit. Tell me the entire album is this good.

4.5/5 (Passed to next round)

Lord(e)Po)))ts
“The Sinister Minister”

Slap bass? On MY country song? The banjo is cool, as is the harmonica. This is bizarre as hell, really. I guess this is all instrumental, which adds to it because it’s engaging without needing vocals. This would be an awesome TV show theme song for a comedy or something. Jazz fusion bluegrass, nice.

”Until Morale Improves, the Beatings Will Continue”

Very alt-rock so far. This is country music? I guess I'll call it “heavier 90s Americana.” As for the song itself, it’s easy on the ears, but nothing stands out about this for me other than maybe the grungy vocals and even those I’m not in love with.

3/5 (ELIMINATED!)

“Turn to Hate”

Post-punk country? Reminds me of the band, The Mekons, I was recommended once. Fear and Whiskey from 1985 was the album and I gave it a 2.5 haha. This is honestly crazy similar. It’s pleasant. It’s a meshing of genres that works fairly well, but it’s also not really for me at all (much like The Mekons.) I do like his voice though.

3.1/5 (ELIMINATED!)

Pangea
“Annie, Heart Thief of the Sea”

Well this sounds like it’s going to turn into a jaunty sing-a-long. Yup, it is. I was underwhelmed by Lighght, but this catches my ear more weirdly enough. Whoa, those backups is extra country. This sounds like it belongs in some len flared, high color-saturated commercial about salad dressing set on a hot summer day in a family’s backyard BBQ, if I’m being honest. I hate how specific that is, but wow does it encapsulate this song’s vibe perfectly. It’s kinda fun though.

3.3/5 (Passed to next round)

GhandhiLion
“Black Soul Choir”

Drums here rule, as does the banjo. I’m already enticed. The vocals are meh, but musically, this is neat. More post-punky country, but with tons of passion. So, I lied about the vocals, they’ve grown on me a lot. And that quiet clicky attention they gave to percussion worked really well, Not really a solo exactly, but? Whatever, this is cool as hell.

4.2/5 (Passed to next round)
10The Flying Burrito Brothers
The Gilded Palace of Sin

Ryus
“Christine's Tune”

This is like classic country right here, but with a rock pickup. It almost has a “60s British evasion” vibe to the vocals, but twangier. The steel guitar is really pretty and I like it’s juxtaposition to the regular distorted electric guitar. Actually, there's an acoustic guitar too. Three types of guitars, four if you count the bass guitar, damn.

3.9/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = 4.3/5 (Passed to next round)
11Nina Nastasia
The Blackened Air

“Ugly Face”

I already like her album Run to Ruin so this is a super safe choice. Her voice is gorgeous and the violin certainly makes me think of a prairie. Her music has this amazing ability to quietly build up without you realizing until it culminates. I need to check this album.

4.8/5 (ROUND WINNER, handicap (for others) of +.05 for the next round)
12The Woodbox Gang
Born with a Tail

NeroCorleone
“Debtor's Prison”

Kinda punky, and I like violin. Also very sing-a-longy. Reminds me of folk punk a lot, but more country, but it’s not like psychobilly or anything. Fun stuff, though not exactly something I’d seek out on my own.

3.5/5 (Passed to next round)
