Umbrella Contest 2020 Round 6: Umbrella Statue

2 more out, and 15 still in. (+ 1 out for inactivity, please don't be late guys!)
1The Olivia Tremor Control
Dusk at Cubist Castle

1. Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is rock. Rock 'n' roll, metal, punk, indie rock... etc. Just make sure it has a guitar, percussion, and that a reasonable person would call it rock music. If it doesn't have a regular guitar, it better be Lightning Bolt levels of "obvious rock."

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise, you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Tuesday night, so if you're late, you're out. My 2 least favorite recs will be eliminated each round.

***The winner of the competition can recommend me whatever 2 albums they want and I'll listen to them no matter the album as long as it's not impossible to find..***
2Forest Swords
Engravings

Pangea
“Anneka's Battle”

Nice rhythm so far. Very minimalistic so far. Really picks up in the last minute. This is pretty much just okayish background music.

3/5 (Passed to next round)
3Secede
Tryshasla

budgie
“Leraine”

More chillout music. Took almost two minutes before it felt like it reached anywhere. Yay aimless background music, my favorite! Maybe if this was like 3 minutes shorter, the score wouldn’t be so low.

2.5/5 (Passed to next round)
4Dan Deacon
Bromst

Sinternet
“Snookered”

Fun fact: the only Dan Deacon album I have rated is Meetle Mice, and I gave it a 1.5/5. This is considerably better than most of that album though. The percussion catches my ears and the bells are cool I suppose. Oh damn, after a long buildup, it got really weird in a good way, nice! Oh shit, now it’s glitching. Yeah, this works for me. Far from my favorite, but I like it!

3.8/5 (Passed to next round)
5Ursula's Cartridges
Honeymoon Travels

JustJoe.
“Through a Wormhole”

A minute in and it’s mostly just a soft beat with some ambient textures. Man if it weren’t for that mildly interesting beat, this song would’ve put me to sleep. See, like I can do repetitive, but repetitive, not catchy, AND slow? Wait, weird talking uhhhhh. Yeah that minute of talking didn’t make me like this more, thought it might for a second!

2.4/5 (ELIMINATED)
6The Chemical Brothers
Dig Your Own Hole

Uzumaki
“Elektrobank”

Don’t know what he’s saying, but I’m intrigued. Oh it’s building. This is pretty nice, if not a bit generic. It’s got good energy though. Maybe it would fit well in some 90s theme night at a club. Weird distorted guitar line? Big beat seems to more than occasionally mimic rock without actually having rock instrumentation which is cool I suppose. I’m a bit mixed on this if you couldn’t tell, but I overall like it more than dislike it by a decent margin.

3.4/5 (Passed to next round)
7Leon Vynehall
Nothing Is Still

Ryus
“Envelopes”

Slow start so far, but the backmasking is cool. Wait, that’s it? It never went anywhere. Goddamn, fucking ambient music. It can be cool in small doses, but I don’t get it at all in larger doses.

2.6/5 (Passed to next round)
8Louis Cole
Time

Lord(e)Po)))ts
“Weird Part of the Night”

Finally something you can dance to. That slow, big brain IDM and ambient shit is not for me. I much prefer this simple stuff honestly. His voice isn’t exactly pleasant, but everything else here works really well. Is it weird that I don’t find this song weird though? I feel like the lyrics imply that I’m supposed to. Regardless: This is dumb fun in a good way.

3.7/5 (Passed to next round)
9Tangerine Dream
Firestarter OST

Divaman
“Charly the Kid”

Oh god, this legitimately is the type of song that could only be written for an 80s soundtrack. Every cliche from the metallic rattles to those airy synths is here. This is hilariously dated. Blech.

2.2/5 (ELIMINATED)
10Weval
Easier

Trifolium
“Gimme Some”

Plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink. The energy is great, and pretty dancy, yeah. Like, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this, but it’s not exactly hitting me in a way that’d make me love it.

3.3/5 (Passed to next round)
11The Chemical Brothers
Come with Us

dedex
“Star Guitar”

This makes me think of 2000s video game music for some high energy game. Yet again, this makes for good dance music. Not the most unique thing I’ve ever heard, but it works.

3.5/5 (Passed to next round)
12Pendulum
Hold Your Colour

ReturnToRock
“Tarantula”

What is this, dubstep? Wikipedia says drum and bass, as if I know the difference. Very far from the kinda music I’m familiar with haha. Man, a few years ago I probably would’ve just written this off as absolute shit, but hearing it now, I kinda get it. It’s fast-paced, high energy, sweating in a dark club kinda music. I mean this isn’t something I could see myself seriously getting into, but I’ve heard much worse and in the right location, this would be a bop.

3/5 (Passed to next round)
13Elsiane
Hybrid

bgillesp
“Vaporous”

Is this the trip hop group with the mega weird vocalist? Looking back you picked a song from this exact album last time. Seriously though what’s with her voice? Does she have peanut butter stuck to the roof of her mouth or something? The strings are gorgeous and the atmosphere in general is sexy, so I’ll give the ugly voice a slight pass.

3.4/5 (Passed to next round)
14Akira Yamaoka
Silent Hill 2

Zig
“Alone in the Town”

I like that piano and those drums. More trip hop? I’m hearing Portishead vibes. No vocals? Such a shame, but honestly, it’s short enough where it still works completely. Oh wow I like that ringing bit. Man this really is like the back to a Portishead song, isn’t it? Can Beth Gibbons sue?

4/5 (Passed to next round)
15Nmesh
Pharma

GhandhiLion
“Mall Full of Drugs”

This is like some bad trip stuff. I’m gonna disregard the weird A Goofy Movie rated R furry shit in the music video when rating this song because ew. Man those swelling noises remind me of a certain time in my life. Whoa vocals that aren’t just samples came in and they sound demonic as fuck. This is actually really unique (I think?) and catchy. This is the kinda shit you hear in a movie when people are trying to predict what the pop music 80 years from now will sound like. I wonder what pop music from 2100 will sound like. Wild stuff.

3.7/5 (Passed to next round)
16The Moon and Saturn
The Moon and Saturn

garas
“II”

Sounds like 90s video game music. Like something you’d hear on a gameboy in a jungle level of some platformer. This was pleasantly quaint.

3/5 (Passed to next round)
17Minimum Syndicat
Killing Forcefield

NeroCorleone
“Bizarre Brainwaves”

Simple and dancy. Another song that’d be nice in a club, but I couldn’t see myself listening to outside of that. Meh, not bad, but not good.

2.5/5 (Passed to next round)
18Smoke City
Flying Away

Minushuman24
“Underwater Love”

I like the guitar sample and her voice. Goddamn, that samba influence meshes so perfectly with the trip hop beat. This is gorgeous and keeps my interest despite being a slow seven minute song.

4.6/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = 5.1/5?????? (ROUND WINNER, handicap (for others) of +.05 for the next round)
