Kompys2000
06.02.20 | It's better than being openly on the side of the police I suppose but it really feels the barest of minimums from a lot of people who have the means to do much more |
JWT155
06.02.20 | Wait, so if someone doesn't "blackout" their page now are they an enemy?
Does this apply to Facebook and Instagram and your direct friends?
I'm all for protesting peacefully, but this rhetoric of pitting people against each other and forcing people to pick a side is antagonistic and will cause a civil war.
99.99999% of the country finds what happened to George Floyd vile and those repsonsible be prosecuted to the fullest. I don't need to post a black picture and conform to any narrative to prove my allegiance or beliefs. |
Kompys2000

on a small friend-to-friend scale it won't matter. but it's a bigger moment than when the "we're with france" terrorism moment happened - because of the pandemic/recession pileup. people can tell if you're being a faker about it so support however you wish. small businesses have been been silent on everything else until now so for all that groundwork your favorite brand had put in to reach out and humanize can't risk losing face.
"this rhetoric of pitting people against each other and forcing people to pick a side is antagonistic and will cause a civil war."
maybe if the president stops dog whistling
"99.99999% of the country finds what happened to George Floyd vile and those responsible be prosecuted to the fullest."
how are you gonna throw that number out like that when shit is where it's at. for sure a majority are in accordance, but there's still thousands of racists existing in america dude where are you at? they're in uniform, they're swinging bats, hammers, shooting arrows at people, running people over. that and the motherfuckers who wanna participate in burning the world don't care what happened to the man, they're abusing the chaos.

06.02.20 | It's virtue signaling from your couch in suburbia. It's all insulting when white people working remotelly from their couches are supporting "protests" that turn violent and decimating urban areas.

06.02.20 | I agree with JWT. I think stuff like this provides a false sense of validation while simultaneously alienating those most affected by the problem. Maybe if we push all these disingenuous measures off the table we can open a legitimate dialogue about the issue. |
Relinquished
06.02.20 | thing is if you participate and have a good circle, you can see that people are amending the actions of those seeming disingenuous yet well-intentioned
like how on instagram the blackboxes started off as #blacklivesmatter but that was bumping off actual blm posts so people have been campaigning those posts to change their tags and it's been working. people are trying. |

Kompys2000
06.02.20 | Idc if my cousin posts a black box on FB or whatever, it's not all that productive but yanno it's the thought that counts.
What gets my goat is all these paltry token gestures by people/organizations who have enough influence to actually potentially change the state of things-especially when it serves to distract from active complicity with harmful systems in their personal and/or professional lives |
Kompys2000

JWT155
06.02.20 | I mean my comment is a generalization in and of itself. I think there are perhaps plenty of people peacefully protesting, I applaud them.
I also know of plenty of very "priviledged" individuals, as the left would define them, that have very staunch stances of being pro-protest/looting, making excuses for the violence and looting from the comfort of their own home without any actual skin in the game. |
Keyblade

06.02.20 | You're right, I don't, maybe we should give a platform to all the small business owners and employees of large retail chains who's areas are being directly affected the opportunity to share their thoughts on what's going on. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.02.20 | The self righteous moderation it takes to get distracted/upset about people and businesses posting a black box like it is detrimental to the cause and cant be performed simultaneously with other more meaningful/impactful actions is inspiring. I think I'll stop signing protesting, donating and signing petitions and focus more on shaming people for expressing solidarity. |

06.02.20 | I have nothing against people coming together and unifying for justice for George Floyd and mending our communities, I'm 100% for that.
What I'm not for are people who justify and advocate the looting and violence that's occurring, and there are plenty of people justifying the vile acts that are going on. There is no excuse, just as there is no excuse as to why George Floyd is dead at the hands of a despicable cop who should rot in jail for the rest of his life. |
Keyblade
06.02.20 | swear at least 50% of jwts politics is getting mad about virtue signalling. who fucking cares dude |
JWT155
06.02.20 | Because words and ideas have meaning and hold weight.
You may find it trivial, but I do not know how you can have a civilized society when a vast majority of people advocate for the looting and destruction of private property along with assaulting anyone in your way.
You may think what's going on is no bid deal, I on the otherhand have been horrified by the actions I've seen by both the cops and protesters/rioters/looters over the past week, and unless actions are taken by both sides to come together that this very well may be a tipping point for our country. |
