Umbrella Contest 2020 Round 3: Antique Umbrella

2 more out and 23 still in
1Johannes Brahms
Hungarian Dances

1. Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is orchestral. Medieval, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern, Contemporary, and Orchestral film soundtrack all work. I will NOT be counting baroque pop, chamber pop, symphonic metal, or any popular genre "mixed" with classical. I want the real deal. Recommend me 1 movement, not an entire symphony, otherwise, I will only listen to the first movement.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise, you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Tuesday night, so if you're late, you're out. My 2 least favorite recs will be eliminated each round.

***The winner of the competition can recommend me whatever 2 albums they want and I'll listen to them no matter the album as long as it's not impossible to find..***
2Exuma
Exuma

Ryus
“Exuma, the Obeah Man”

I like the percussion. The vocals are cool, they kinda remind me of Dr. John, whom I like. This album has been recommended to me a bunch of times, but I always forget to check it. Yeah, this is cool.

4/5 (Passed to next round)
3Joni Mitchell
Hits

Divaman
“The Urge for Going”

Joni always had such a pretty voice. This is very simple and I can’t say it’s grabbing me completely since the guitar isn’t exactly gripping. I’ve heard way better from her honestly.

3.3/5 (Passed to next round)
4Phil Ochs
Pleasures of the Harbor

Uzumaki
“The Crucifixion”

Wow, that intro was jarring. Not bad. I know this is irrelevant, but I always found Phil Ochs to be pretty cute. Look at this face: https://tinyurl.com/ya5clug2 ! The vocals seem to weirdly not fit the music, so that’s a but of a minus. As if Phil is singing a simple guitar song, but the music is crazy psychedelic stuff. Hmmm. I like it though regardless.

3.6/5 (Passed to next round)
5Jim Sullivan
U.F.O.

Sinternet
“Rosey”

This is catchy right off the bat. The best way to brighten up an otherwise boring acoustic guitar song is an engaging string section. Whoa, that pickup rules. Damn this went in a direction I was expecting. Abrupt ending, but I don’t mind.

4.5/5 (ROUND WINNER, handicap (for others) of +.05 for the next round)
6Four Tet
Rounds

Avantaganmos
“Hands”

This sounds very glitchy, but not in an abrasive way. It works pretty well for chillout music. This is folk I guess? I don’t really care for how this song is directionless though. It’s kinda boring and robotic for that reason.

2.6/5 (Passed to next round)
7Comus
First Utterance

Aberf
“Diana”

Good bass. I’m a simple man: I hear high mixed bass and I’m already intrigued. The vocals are so 70s prog haha. Okay, now I feel like I’m at some Eastern European wedding party. This was fine.

3.4/5 (Passed to next round)
8Cousin Boneless
Possession

SlothcoreSam
“Null Set, off Possession”

What the hell is this? That harsh vox is just annoying and disrupts an otherwise okay folk song. The banjo solo is fun though, I’ll give it that. This isn’t for me at all.

2.3/5 (ELIMINATED)
9Thy Catafalque
Naiv

garas
“Embersólyom”

This is folk metal? It’s mostly piano and synth though. Wait, those vocals and flute are folky and there’s the guitar. Do I like this? Hell no. Does it bother me? Nah. It kept me on my toes, so bonus points for that.

2.7/5 (Passed to next round)
10Joanna Newsom
Have One on Me

dedex
“Baby Birch”

Her voice is pretty normal here compared to other songs I’ve heard from her. This is so simplistic right now that I’m a bit bored, but I notice that this song is 9 and a half minutes, so I kinda expect this to be just a buildup. LOUD CLAPPING. Late game pickup with those drums too. This is probably the kind of song I’d like more on repeated listens. Pretty good once I knew where it was headed.

3.9/5 (Passed to next round)
11Oumou Sangare
Moussolou

Trifolium
“Moussolou”

I like the violin and the guitar here. Very rhythmic. Her voice is pretty. No idea what she’s saying, but oh well. Might overstay its welcome a bit though. Like if this were 4 minutes instead of 5, it’d be near perfect.

4/5 (Passed to next round)
12Stara Rzeka
Zamknely Sie Oczy Ziemi

Pangea
"Male Swierki"

Echoey Pink Floyd? Seriously, this reminds me of “A Pillow of Winds,” but with more reverb. The trumpet is nice. The scratches on the guitar do add some needed grit that works pretty well. Not bad.

3.4/5 (Passed to next round)
13Skinny Lister
Forge and Flagon

ReturnToRock
“If The Gaff Don't Let Us Down”

Very Irish, but they’re from England? Okay. This is so standard as folk punk, that I have trouble finding anything interesting to say about it, but it's not bad. Pleasant even.

3/5 (Passed to next round)
14Amazing Blondel
Fantasia Lindum

Protokute
“Fantasia Lindum”

The balls on you for recommending a 20 minute song. So far the guitar and flute are pleasant enough. Those harmonies sound so nerdy. Wikipedia says they do Medieval Folk and yeah that’s why it’s so nerdy. So, I don’t mind long songs. I mean a 10 minute song won the pop round. My 2nd favorite song ever is over 18 mins, but when I don’t like a long song it feels like work because it takes so long to finish. I’m 8 minutes in and I’m already bored of this. Oh nice, a fakeout ending twelve minutes in that totally doesn’t make this feel even longer. Wait, it got really pretty 14 and a half minutes in. Dammit, why didn’t the song start here? Is it finally over? No wait, only 18 and a half minutes in. As lame as this is at points, it was really pretty at others. Please don’t recommend me something 20 minutes again.

3.1/5 (Passed to next round)
15Ichiko Aoba
0 (Zero)

JohnnyoftheWell
“Kikaijikake No Ucyuu” (from 0)

So far this sounds like typical contemporary folk. Ooh it sped up though. That’s neat and I like the acoustic bass on it too. Why does this song feel all over the place, almost like it’s multiple songs in one? I lost my focus on this one a lot.

3/5 (Passed to next round)
16Karen Dalton
In My Own Time

botulist
“Something on your Mind”

Why does she sound like a female Neil Young? I don’t like her voice honestly at all. Musically it’s fine. Nothing is really standing out.

2.5/5 (Passed to next round)
17Oren Bloedow and Jennifer Charles
La Mar Enfortuna

Lord(e)Po)))ts
La Mar Enfortuna - "Aman Minush"

Ooh, this has an epic feel to it right off the bat. I like the string section, it’s dreary in a pretty way. Jennifer Charles’ voice is sultry and captivating. Yeah, this is good.

4.3/5 (Passed to next round)
18Pitou
I Fall Asleep So Fast

budgie
“I Fall Asleep So Fast”

Simplistic acoustic folk. Those backup vocals give this song a bit of a flair. This is pretty vocally emotional, but honestly it makes me think that maybe this would’ve been a small hit in the early 2000s if it came out then and was marketed properly. I don’t find this song interesting at all.

2.5/5 (Passed to next round)
19Nick Drake
Pink Moon

Zig
“Place to Be”

Drake’s voice is so warm and the guitar is actually pretty engaging. Not much else to say about this one, but it’s pleasantness overpowers its over-simplicity. I guess that shows what a unique vocalist can do to make a song work.

3.6/5 (Passed to next round)
20Linda Perhacs
Parallelograms

bgillesp
“Hey, Who Really Cares?”

This sounds like Joni Mitchell except with a pretty whistle effect in the background.

3.4/5 (Passed to next round)
21Cocanha
Puput

GhandhiLion
“Cotelon”

This is weird and reminds me of Dirty Projectors (the Coffman period) a lot, except less indie pop.

3.9/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = 4.4/5 (Passed to next round)
22Bon Iver
22, A Million

neekafat
“666 ʇ”

I don’t like these vocals at all. The typical “indie folk whine” is not my thing at all. and musically it’s kinda plain. That electronic scratchy sound in the back works though and the bass that just came in is cool. Oh no, the inspirational indie folk drums ew. Cool electronic scratchy sounds can’t save bland indie folk tropes. I think I might hate Bon Iver.

2.1/5 (ELIMINATED)
23Big Blood
Dark Country Magic

NeroCorleone
"Creepin' Crazy Time"

Weird and echoey. I like the strings. That pickup is so bluesy ooh. I can’t say this is my favorite thing ever, but it certainly grabs my attention. An epic finish? Usually a good choice and this is no exception.

3.7/5 (Passed to next round)
24GRAND HALLWAY
Promenade

JustJoe.
“Raindrops (Matsuri)”

This definition has that “inspirational” feel. The pickup with the trumpet is nice. Not the first rec this round helped by trumpets. Eh, kinda boring actually, but not terrible.

2.9/5 (Passed to next round)
25Purple Mountains
Purple Mountains

Minushuman24
“Snow is Falling in Manhattan”

I already know 2 songs on this album: “Nights that Won’t Happen” and “Margaritas at the Mall.” Those vocals make me think of Leonard Cohen. More trumpets! This is fine, but like the last one, it didn’t really grab me. I like his voice here though.

3.1/5 (Passed to next round)
26Simon and Garfunkel
Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme

ZombieToyDuck
“Patterns”

Those are fun bongos. I’ve heard so many Simon and Garfunkel songs, but not this one. This one seems weirdly more stripped down than most of the stuff I’ve heard from them.
