ArsMoriendi
05.26.20 | I repeat: baroque pop, baroque rock, folk baroque, symphonic metal, chamber pop, orchestral pop and other similar fusions do not count.
Recommend me 1 movement from an orchestral composer, not a "band" or "popstar." |
JustJoe.
05.26.20 | damn i don’t actually no anything orchestral i think but i guess it’s time for some new discovery |
GhandhiLion
05.26.20 | 1 movement? That's a ridiculously hard choice. |
neekafat
05.26.20 | lmfao every time I pick a track I actually care about instead of ars-bait I die |
neekafat
05.26.20 | "musically it’s kinda plain"
m8 this is a folk round yknow that right |
Bedex
05.26.20 | ooh this is gonna be a good round
can we have 50potato and zig throw recs even if it's not for the contest thankyou |
GhandhiLion
05.26.20 | btw Baby Birch is a 10/10 masterpiece |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.20 | Lol If you think the massive umbrella of folk is plain in totality you deserve to have been knocked out |
NeroCorleone
05.26.20 | Yeah folk isnt just singer/songwriter stuff |
neekafat
05.26.20 | I don't lmfao I wouldn't like folk if it all sounded the same
I'm just saying folk isn't just about being sonically adventurousness is it
|
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.20 | For this terrible round will you accept modern classical or musique concrete? You seem to be disincluding everything remotely interesting so I'm a bit nervous |
neekafat
05.26.20 | "Yeah folk isnt just singer/songwriter stuff"
thank you for this wisdom i am forever in your debt |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.20 | "I'm just saying folk isn't just about being sonically adventurousness is it"
Exploring world music is about as sonically adventurous as it gets!
For like... modern western indie folk I get it tho |
Trifolium
05.26.20 | Omg Ars I'm super happy you liked Oumou she is so amazing. Everyone should check her out, lovely lovely voice and delicious rhythms everywhere. |

neekafat
05.26.20 | i will accept my pwnage and go im just frustrated by ars's bizarre takes yet again |
GhandhiLion
05.26.20 | @trifolium
check Ko Sira! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.20 | His takes are definitely often bizarre and quite vexing, usually amplified by his completely inexplicable assuredness. |
Trifolium
05.26.20 | Bi Furu, Ko Sira and Denw aren't easily found, they were only released on cassette 😥
Heard most of those tracks on her compilation double album though, and yeah they rule too. She hasn't released anything subpar, love her. |
GhandhiLion
05.26.20 | Ko Sira was released on CD. It is on yt too. |
Trifolium
05.26.20 | No way!!!! Any idea on where to find them? Not on Discogs...
(Physical copies I mean of course.) |
ArsMoriendi
05.26.20 | @Potsy: if by Modern Classical you mean: the non popular or jazz sections of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modernism_(music) and/or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contemporary_classical_music then sure
Musique concrete will count if it's primarily made by an orchestra such as this piece from 2018's comp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZazYFchLRI
|
GhandhiLion
05.26.20 | @Trifolium
For sale? Because I see CD issues listed for them on discogs.
I found this:

2 copies on Amazon too |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.20 | "primarily made by an orchestra"
*for*
hold on are you saying your classifier for this entire theme is that it has to be orchestral? if so, thats pretty retarded. we already aren't allowed to rec any derivative forms, i think you've neutered the round enough as is! |
Trifolium
05.26.20 | Dude you're absolutely right. I swear I looked those two up already and wasn't able to find them.
You've made my day Ghandhi! Thanks! |
GhandhiLion
05.26.20 | np :]
Discogs does say that there was a CD for Bi Furu. But it was not on a label so it probably doesn't exist. |
Pangea
05.26.20 | hell yeah improvement. not sure if i'm going to survive the next round though |
ArsMoriendi
05.26.20 | "hold on are you saying your classifier for this entire theme is that it has to be orchestral? if so, thats pretty retarded"
"2. The genre this round is orchestral. Medieval, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern, Contemporary, and Orchestral film soundtrack all work."
It's pretty much trying to capture what most people think when they hear the term "classical music" but be far from just the classical period. So, stuff made by orchestras. It doesn't have to be a large one. Supposedly, some baroque orchestras have as few as 8 musicians. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.20 | *for orchestras* |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.20 | so you are discounting the legions of classical pieces that are performed by a single dude on a piano? |
ArsMoriendi
05.26.20 | Oh no fuck, that's what you think? Solo pieces are okay too. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.20 | ok thank god |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.20 | one last question
does it have to be western classical? |
GhandhiLion
05.26.20 | I don't see what the problem is if he limited it to only orchestral pieces. Would make choosing a bit easier. |
ArsMoriendi
05.26.20 | I kinda hate the term "classical" as an all-encompassing genre since it only refers to one period and thought it might confuse people when anything from Bach to Mozart to Chopin to Tchaikovsky to Ravel to Glass to John Williams works |
Divaman
05.26.20 | "I’ve heard way better from her honestly." Ah, but the idea was to rec you something you haven't heard. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.20 | "I don't see what the problem is if he limited it to only orchestral pieces. Would make choosing a bit easier."
same problem as if this was a jazz round and he said "big band only". its an arbitrary limitation that makes it less fun and more homogenous. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.20 | so will you accept indian classical like a boss or is this white ppl hour |
garas
05.26.20 | Oh boy... does neo-classical influenced dungeon synth count as orchestral?
I'm pretty sure I'll be dropped in this round. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.20 | "Oh boy... does neo-classical influenced dungeon synth count as orchestral?"
lol i love you
but if he was going to count that while not including the baroque and chamber fusions i'd have to flip a table |
GhandhiLion
05.26.20 | There are way more orchestral classical pieces than big band jazz songs. Shortening the criteria to big band for jazz is way more limiting for jazz.
"Classical Music" has too much breadth for me to decide on just one movement :[ |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.20 | "There are way more orchestral classical pieces than big band jazz songs.
"Classical Music" has too much breadth and periods for me to decide :["
that's a 'you' problem. |
garas
05.26.20 | Well, did you expect anything else from me, Potsy?
I'm curious...since so many great VSTs exist, it is pretty much possible to compose "orchestral" music if you can use a DAW~ |
Divaman
05.26.20 | You're probably familiar with this one, but if not:
James Horner - Main Title from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDW5-VczFHo&list=PLH9C08qrQ7S7XKQ9tuYR90d5NhE8cGpqv

|
garas
05.26.20 | Ahhhhhhhh, fair point. |
ArsMoriendi
05.26.20 | @Potsy: Doing some googling to make sure it makes sense AND
From what I'm looking up, India, Iran, Turkey/former Ottman empire, Korea, and South East Asia all seem to have classical traditions that span hundreds of years. So yeah, it doesn't have to be European/American
Just don't confuse it with Indian folk music since apparently they're vastly different according to people who study the 2.
Indian classical is usually split into Carnatic and Hindustani (and includes the mode raga)
Whereas Indian folk has a lot of genres including Bhangra, Sufi, and others I haven't heard of.
Pick the classical and you'll be good, pick the folk and you'll lose points |

05.26.20 | "Oh boy... does neo-classical influenced dungeon synth count as orchestral?"
No. Bro, you're from the country that Béla Bartók and Franz Liszt, I'm sure you can think of something |

Aram Khachaturian: Gayane - lullaby
Wonderful composer and I’d rec the entire Gayane suite they play on this album, but just going with the lullaby will give you a nice idea of the composer. No lie, the album that this is from, that’s featured in my YouTube link, is actually the first CD I ever owned. |

protokute
05.26.20 | I agree I would be a little bit worried to rec you a 20 min song, to be honest, but this song hits me in a really special way, and I love how ludic the imagery created by the vocal harmonies and flutes can get, makes me think of child days, and I was totally comfortable sharing you that. Maybe it has more appeal when listened in the context of the album? If the prettier bits caught your attention maybe you should try listening to the album, that goes by the same name of the song. anyway........................................................
for this round, I'll admit I'm not a big listener of classical music, and my knowledge is pretty much scarce, unfortunately, apart from the big classic classical movements, but I'm a fan of gregorian and byzantine chanting, so I'll go with:

Is Manowar covering Flight of the Bumblebee in a rock style? If so, it doesn't work, but if they break out the violin or flute only it'd work EXCEPT I know Flight of the Bumblebee (Doesn't everyone?)

Bersarin Quartett - Die Dinge sind nie so wie sie sind

ArsMoriendi
05.30.20 | Is this the link? "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7mqKGGAXaY" If so, from my skimming, this does not sound classical to me at all
It'd work for the eventual electronic round though, so I guess you could save it for that |
Sinternet
05.30.20 | it's ambient with orchestral instrumentation
i mean i'm really not sure what is and isn't allowed here, you've basically given the most broad and unhelpful description, so some clarification might be good |
ArsMoriendi
05.30.20 | I'm just gonna round it down to the main reason I don't want to count it: those drums, which are super prominent, arguably even the leading force, don't sound like orchestral instrumentation at all.
-----
EXTRA non-TLDR stuff:
I could see ambient classical being an idea I'd count, but maybe leave pop/rock/hip hop elements out of it entirely? I'd say leave out electronic elements too, but Wendy Carlos' Bach covers seem pretty damn classical...
That's why I said: "baroque pop, baroque rock, folk baroque, symphonic metal, chamber pop, orchestral pop, and other similar fusions do not count." I don't want contemporary pop conventions to be the leading force for why I like a song [this round] since it feels like cheating. I just want classical (which could mean anything from Bach to Debussy to John Williams, or Ravi Shankar and other Eastern classical traditions as Potsy pointed out.)
If it helps, this is likely to be the nitpickiest of the rounds.
