Castlevania! & Other Platformers & Metroidvanias

Been on a huge Castlevania and platformer/metroidvania binge in general lately. Games are what I've been playing lately and how I'd rate them
1Soundtrack (Video Game)
Castlevania - Original Video Game Soundtrack

8/10 - The classic that started it all! Very unforgiving, but certainly doable. Slowly getting to the point of being able to speed run this
2Soundtrack (Video Game)
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest

2/10 - Certified garbage, borderline unplayable. This is part of the NES era infamous for cryptic bullshit: at one point in the game, you're expected to equip a red amulet and crouch down by a wall for about 10 seconds to advance to the next part of the game. The game does a very poor job at telling the player where to go or what to do, and the long transitions from day to night and night to day are painful to sit through every 5 minutes.
3Soundtrack (Video Game)
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse

6.5/10 - I honestly found this one infinitely more tedious than the first game. Depending on which paths you take, you could end up in these downright dogshit platforming sections that move vertically, expecting the player to wait for sometimes up to 5 minutes to get to the next screen, all the while enemy spam is everywhere. Also stairs. fuck stairs in this game.
4Soundtrack (Video Game)
Super Castlevania IV

9/10 - Easily one of the best in the Castlevania franchise, showcasing the SNES' superior hardware with a bunch of neat visual tricks. Often cited as being one of the easiest in the series, it still is a ton of fun, allowing you to control Simon's movement mid-air and attack in all directions with the whip.
5Soundtrack (Video Game)
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood

9.5/10 - Great challenge, great atmosphere, some of the most memorable level design in the series and some of the coolest boss fights to boot. I'd actually take this one over a lot of the metroidvania style Castlevanias I've played.
6Michiru Yamane
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night OST

10/10 - Predictable rating? Whatever, this is the game that helped birth an entire genre, and arguably my favourite genre of gaming. Alucard is a blast to use, the castle is fun as hell to explore, and the atmosphere, soundtrack, boss design - it's all perfect.

The Eternal Resonance

Bloodstained Curse of the Moon
9/10 - An amazing throwback to the classics, but at the same time better than almost all of them. This game is an 8-bit masterpiece, but of course has tons of visual flair that the nes wouldn't have been able to handle. Highly recommended for anyone who's a fan of old school Castlevania or platformers in general.
8Morbus Chron
Sweven

Bloodstained Ritual of the Night
9.5/10 - Easily one of the best metroidvanias of the past decade, made by the man himself, Koji Igarashi. I was so skeptical of this game when it first debuted years ago. Igarashi received hard backlash from kickstarter backers that it visually looked plain and homogeneous, so he took the time to completely revamp the game's visual style and it paid off in a huge way. Tons of great easter eggs and a castle that nearly rivals the joys of going through Symphony of the Night. Don't pass this up.
9Christopher Larkin
Hollow Knight: Gods & Nightmares

Hollow Knight
10/10 - The best metroidvania I've ever played. Full stop. Nothing even comes remotely close to this imo. The world, the charm, the atmosphere, THE SOUNDTRACK, the combat - HK earns a gold star in every single category. The hype for Silksong is insanely high.
10Gorguts
Obscura

Blasphemous
8/10 - I'm not quite through this one yet, but I've been loving the hell out of it so far. Deeply disturbing and macabre, more so than any metroidvania I've ever played. Hope it keeps this momentum until the end.
11Jake Kaufman
Shovel Knight

9.5/10 - Probably the best modern-day platformer I've played. There's just an absurd amount of content here. Shovel of Hope and Plague of Shadows are a bit similar in that the maps don't really change, but the other two expansions are where the game gets very excited and shuffles the boards in interesting ways. Most people have probably played the original campaign, but if you haven't had a chance to check out its dlcs, I highly recommended it.
12DJ Healer
Nothing 2 Loose

Ori and the Blind Forest
8.5 /10 - Another huge success for the metroidvania genre. Unique art style and soundtrack really elevates Ori to a higher echelon than a lot of its contemporaries - also that intro will leave you choked up. Really looking forward to playing Will of the Wisps.
13Kristofer Maddigan
Cuphead

10/10 - Not really a platformer or metroidvania, although there are platforming sections within, Cuphead is more of a run and gun game, but I'm putting it on here anyway because it's a masterpiece that should be enjoyed by everyone - even filthy casuals can play it on 'simple' mode if they just want to appreciate the art (art that is painstakingly hand drawn - some of the boss attack animations have dozens of frames for one single attack). Hope we get a release date soon for that dlc
