05.09.20 | BSSM and Abbey Road are albums that showed me just how important the bass guitar could be to a song. Flea and Paul McCartney were the anchors and cores of many of the songs, creating skeletons of the song which their bandmates would build off of ("Funky Monks," "Come Together"). Fantastic list. |
Rickislost
05.09.20 | Fantastic list, Fungus Amongus blew me away when I first heard.
Love Jamiroquai in there too, all of their bassists have been amazing! |

05.09.20 | No Mudvayne's L.D. 50 huh? |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.09.20 | Excellent list m8!

05.09.20 | You must be pretty good if you can play this stuff |
Rowhaus
05.09.20 | No Overkill? Type O Negative? Helmet? Dying Fetus? Mudvayne? Living Colour? |

05.09.20 | @JeffKing1992 Definitely! I'm so happy that these two huge artists are able to bring exposure to the bass guitar. This is a cliche, but the bass is the foundation of the band. A bad bass player usually makes a band sound really thin, especially live. Thank you for checking out the list!
@Rickislost YES!!! Fungus Amongus is SUCH an underrated album with some of the best bass lines in Alt-Rock. Jamiroquai is killer too and has always had good bass players in the band!
DaveT0738 I've seen some Mudvayne covers on Youtube but I never got to checking them out! I'll probably like them since I dig that Alt-Metal from the 90's.
@MrSirLordGentleman I'll check Renaissance out! Thank you!
@chemicalmarriage - Thank you! All I did in high school was literally play bass and read books so I put all my focus on learning stuff/music theory. I had to give up video games though lol. |

05.09.20 | Great list!
I love: 3, 6, 8, 9, 11, 15, 16, 17, 20, 22!!!!!!!!!!!!!, 25, 26, 33, 35, 37, 41, 44, 48, 51, and 53
Wasn't really into: 36, 40, and 55
Haven't heard the rest
legendary list, Parliament is godly
(you listed King Crimson's Discipline twice)
Have you heard Cymande's self-titled album? I think you'd love it, it's essential 70s funk |
TheGraduate
05.09.20 | @Rowhaus forgot to add Living Colour! I'm not really into Thrash Metal/Death Metal unfortunately, which is why I don't have too many of those bands. |
TheGraduate
05.09.20 | @ArsMoriendi No worries man we all have different opinions on "classic" albums. I personally couldn't get into Radiohead very much besides their The Bends work (I respect them deeply though). Thank you for pointing that out! I switched it out for a band I forgot to list hehe.
Parliament is so underrated on this website! Everybody's gotta check em out at some point, they're a really fun band. Guitarists NEED to check out Funkadelic because of Eddie Hazel.
I'll check out Cymande! I've never heard of them but any 70's funk will win me over! |
Anthracks
05.09.20 | lots of great bass playing out there and nice list. someone who is very underappreciated as a bassist is kevin barnes of of montreal. yes peddling my favorite band, but his simple catchy basslines are integral to most of his songs

ArsMoriendi
05.09.20 | I second Of Montreal
For an indie-pop band aping 60s psych-pop, their songs sure have a lot of amazing basslines
I can only really vouch for their albums The Gay Parade and Satanic Panic in the Attic though... need to check more by them |
Egarran
05.09.20 | No Korn or Manowar wtf |
Sinternet
05.09.20 | skrillex |
JeffKing1992
05.09.20 | Another band that I would have loved to have seen on here (though it is subjective, in the end) is Jane's Addiction. Like RHCP or the Beatles, Jane's secret weapon was Eric A. He built the foundation for many of the songs (see "Summertime Rolls" and "Three Days," not entirely coincidentally, my two favorite songs by them), and Perry, Dave, and Stephen just took the songs from there. |
Kompys2000
05.09.20 | Puttin shit like RHCP and No Doubt on here while Graham Central Station gets snubbed has me smackin my damn head |
Kompys2000
05.09.20 | Still good to see p funk getting some love tho so ur alright |
Inoculaeted
05.09.20 | I realize this suggestion may skew heavier than anything here and as such, may not be for you at all. Regardless, Al Cisneros is a stoner metal legend on bass in Sleep. Holy Mountain or The Sciences for the uninitiated. Dopesmoker after the third eye has been pried open. |
DaveT0738
05.09.20 | I told ya ;) also, Sean Beasley from Dying Fetus is a fucking beast, the guy does some sweet ass sweep tapping |
Egarran
05.09.20 | RATM though |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.09.20 | Oh I also forgot about this masterpiece https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kscXG8ro6hQ

05.10.20 | Egarran is very much on the money. Timmy C. did some fantastic stuff on the bass. |
JDubb
05.10.20 | No’s. 15 and 36 - Geezer and Chancellor are as close to god-tier that one can get. 56 is a classic. |
Jethro42
05.10.20 | Nice! |
Halfman
05.10.20 | you seem to be a mike watt fan. it’s a bit more off the wall but have you hear big walnuts yonder? |

05.19.20 | Thanks everyone for commenting! I just got back from a really long trip to my old college to pick up my records/other stuff and will listen to all these recommendations!!
@Halfman I am a huuuuggee Mike Watt fan. I actually have a Youtube channel that's (well, sort of) dedicated to covering Minutemen/fIREHOSE, since there aren't many tabs for his stuff. I will give them a listen!
