Mupp's 2020 Q1

Top twenty seemed appropriate
1Loathe (UK)
I Let It In And It Took Everything

4.4 [Alt Metal, Metalcore, Shoegaze]

I know this wasn't everyone's cup of tea here, and I certainly see the gripes. But I can't help but come back to so many of the songs here; it just does it for me.

Top Tracks: Screaming, A Sad Cartoon, T/T, Heavy Is The Head...
2Invent Animate
Greyview

4.1 [Metalcore, Post Hardcore]

I hadn't listened to this band before this record, though I'd seen their name floating around on here. I can't say I was disappointed! Only shortfall here is a slight lack of variety between the songs. Though, to be fair, they do their sound very well, so is there really a need?

Top Tracks: Monarch, Secret Sun, Shapeshifter, Fireside
3Hot Mulligan
You'll Be Fine

4.0 [Emo, Pop Punk]

The band has a certain penchant for writing emotive yet extremely catchy songs, and that's enough to garner a good portion of my attention nine times out of ten.

Top Tracks: *Equip Sunglasses*, BKYRD, Feal Like Crab
4Polaris (AUS)
The Death of Me

3.9 [Metalcore]

Some misses here, but the highlights more than make up for that. Again, some superbly catchy riffs on display here.

Top Tracks: Hypermania, All This Is Fleeting, Landmine
5Higher Power
27 Miles Underwater

3.8 [Hardcore, Alt Metal]

Higher Power move slightly away from the more punk inspired sound on previous records and take more of a 90s post hardcore or alternative slant for this one. It's a sound I like. again, the biggest problem with this recored is that the songs tend to sound a bit samey.

Top Tracks: Low Season, Shedding Skin, Lost In Static
6Four Tet
Sixteen Oceans

3.7 [Microhouse, Ambient]

The first half of the album is so much stronger than the back half, it makes me wish this was an EP. Still, a lovely record no doubt.

Top Tracks: Baby, Romantics, Love Salad
7Fleshwater
Demo

3.7 [Shoegaze, Alt Metal]

A side project of some of the members of Vein, exploring a different sound, and I am really getting behind this. I love everything about the tracks on display here. Only wish it was longer.

Top Tracks: This, If Anything, What Was Really Said
8The Motion Mosaic
Avant-Garbage

3.7 [Mathcore]

This really came out of nowhere. It's exhausting, as all good mathcore should be.

Top Tracks: Blue Skies Over Bedlam, Muad'Dib, Broke Roads
9Noon
Nobody Nothing Nowhere

3.6 [Downtempo]

Some of the songs overstay their welcome a bit, or take slightly too long to build and evolve, but the highlights are my favorite moments in electronic music this year so far

Top Tracks: Bergenske, Spektrum
10Deserta
Black Aura My Sun

3.5 [Shoegaze, Dream Pop]

Just supremely well done shoegaze in the vein of My Bloody Valentine. What's not to like?

Top Tracks: Black Aura, Paradiso, Monica
11Psychonaut
Unfold the God Man

3.5 [Prog Metal, Post Metal]

2018? 2020? Who cares? It's good.

Top Tracks: The Fall Of Consciousness, Nexus
12Yppah
Sunset in the Deep End

3.4 [Trip Hop, Downtempo]

Twinkly post rock tinged electronic shit that Pots hates but I sometimes love.

Top Tracks: Tree Ghost, Dreams Like You
13Jon Kennedy
Mmxx

3.4 [Trip Hop, Downtempo]

Not twinkly post rock tinged electronic shit that pots hates but I sometimes do. I like this one a lot though.

Top Tracks: Four Borders, Once Upon A Time
14Nine Inch Nails
Ghosts V: Together

3.3 [Ambient, Dark Ambient]

Count this entry as being for both sides of this, essentially, double album. It's dark and moody and apocalyptic and it couldn't have come at a more fitting time.

Top Tracks: Your Touch, Still Right Here, Turn This Off Please
15Dogleg
Melee

3.3 [Emo, Post Hardcore]

The slightly more visceral and abrasive cousin to Hot Mulligan's record further up the list. It's fun.

Top Tracks: Prom Hell, Kawasaki Backflip
16A.A.L. (Against All Logic)
2017-2019

3.3 [Tech House, Post Industrial]

Took longer to grow on me than his last album, but has some truly satisfying moments throughout. That said, some of the tracks with sampled vocals were actually quite annoying to me.

Top Tracks: Deeeeeeefers, Faith
17Old Man Gloom
Seminar IX: Darkness of Being

3.3 [Sludge Metal, Post Metal]

Mostly just a bunch of really solid riffs and cool ambient parts sprinkled in.

Top Tracks: In Your Name, Heel To Toe
18Bambara
Stray

3.3 [Post Punk, Punk Blues]

Not something that would normally catch my eye, but this album is very very solid. I love the vocals, but they definitely lend to it being a little on the homogenous side, as there's not much variety there.

Top Tracks: Heat Lightning, Death Croons, Stay Cruel
19Code Orange
Underneath

3.3 [Metalcore, Industrial]

Overrated? Yes. Overhated? Yes.

Top Tracks: Erasure Scan, You And You Alone, Cold.Metal.Place
20Holy Fawn
The Black Moon

3.3 [Shoegaze, Post Metal]

Not as good as their last full length, but both full songs here are more than worth your time.

Top Tracks: Candy, Blood Pact
