03.15.20 | it’ll definitely be a contender along with cyberpunk and last of us
nothing else seems immediately apparent as goty material |

03.15.20 | Looks okay. I might buy it in a year for half price. Too many games over this two month period so I've made my decisions and am only getting Nioh 2, Animal Crossing, Granblue Fantasy Versus, RE3, and FF7.
RIP money. |

03.15.20 | My favorite game franchise of all time. I was there at the beginning in 1993. |

Pikazilla
03.15.20 | Same. My first game ever. |
Pikazilla
03.15.20 | My only gripe is that they are basically forcing you to do glory kills for health and ammo. Takes away some of the fun when I just want to blast stuff with the guns. |
Demon of the Fall
03.15.20 | Weirdly I’m not as hyped for this as the last game, guess I satisfied my nostalgia kick already. Not sure how many new things this will really bring to the table, also would’ve liked a reimagining of Snapmap. |

03.15.20 | Doom 2016 was the shit. Ima wait a couple of years and pick this up when it tanks to £15. |

03.15.20 | I kinda like that the game pushes you to do glory kills. Adds a layer of strategy to the run and gun. |

03.15.20 | I still remember the day. I was visiting my friends at the Milwaukee School Of Engineering, we were in one of the labs. Computers everywhere. My dude says: “Do you want to play Doom?” I said “what’s that?” The rest is history. |

03.15.20 | I was lucky enough to have an older brother that used to play doom and doom 2 with me when I was a little kid, stoked for this. Kind of hope they bring back some of the horror aspects of doom 3 as fun as the run and gun aspects of the last one was |

03.15.20 | I hope they have more variety in the glory kills. It got old watching the same animations repeat over and over. |

03.22.20 | It's easy to boost sensitivity on a gamepad. The only disadvantage gamepad has is difficulties with accuracy and, depending on the button layout, movement and face-button actions.
But playing any FPS with a M&K isn't an inherently different experience. I hate using M&K for FPS games, slightly lower accuracy doesn't bother me much. |

Yeah I don’t play single player games with mouse and keyboard. Controllers are just too hardwired into my brain.
This game is fucking brutal though. I’m getting my ass handed to me even on ultra violence but I’m gonna push on. I’m loving every second of this. |

But you can also dodge all his attacks and barrage him with gunfire

03.24.20 | Doom Eternal is just on a another level. It's leagues beyond anything any other shooter has ever achieved from a design and gameplay standpoint. It's insanely deep and nuanced, has you constantly juggling your abilities and revising your strategies by the second.
The sheer functional variety in enemy behaviors and weapon functionality makes it fit together like a game of speed chess where you have 2 seconds to make a move or you automatically lose. And on top of that, the level design gives you just enough time to recover and collect yourself with some simple puzzles and light platforming that serves the dual purpose of punctuating negative space, as well as mastering your mobility options and environmental movement in general, which is hugely important in this game. It's the best shooter ever made, and it's not even close. It's one of the best video games ever made period.
I can tell you right now, The Last of Us and Cyberpunk aren't even going to come close. Naughty Dog couldn't design their way out of a paper bag, as evidenced by how excruciatingly shallow and poorly-paced literally every one of their games are.
And if The Witcher 3 is any indication, Cyberpunk is likely to be shallow and bloated with massive amounts of negative space and non-interactivity. TW3 aged about a decade the second Breath of the Wild dropped and showed how to actually design an open world, except one bolstered by absurdly dynamic and nuanced interaction. |
Gallantin
03.24.20 | You can tell dudes havent played many action games when they talk about Doom like this

thedoom
03.24.20 | Comparing Doom to The Last of Us and Cyberpunk is useless honestly. It's like comparing completely different genres of music, it's all down to personal preference. |
Gallantin
03.24.20 | Yeah, dumb comparisons, all three games (four if we include RE3R) are completely different genres. You got FPS, action adventure, RPG, and survival horror. All four genres and games will have different strengths and weaknesses that can't be applied to the others. |
Gallantin
03.24.20 | Doom Eternal is like plenty of things. Weirdly, it mostly resembles Japanese character action games. It's kinda like Devil May Cry crossed with Vanquish. Style based action shooter that encourages player expression alongside weird platforming you wouldn't usually expect. It's cool, it definitely has me more excited than Doom 2016 which got super boring super fast. |
CosmicPie
03.24.20 | Just got to Daeg Ranak's Agaddon Hunter. |
TabulaRasa6
03.26.20 | "Comparing Doom to The Last of Us and Cyberpunk is useless honestly. It's like comparing completely different genres of music, it's all down to personal preference."
I didn't look above to see who compared these, but yeah. What you said. |
neekafat
03.26.20 | yeah it's a huge jam |
Alondite
03.26.20 | Comparing Doom to Cyberpunk and The Last of Us is perfectly fine. Being different genres with different core gameplay doesn't mean that aren't still built from the same core design concepts that define video games as a medium (mechanics, interplay, dynamics, etc.), and can be compared on the execution of those shared elements.
I can't comment specifically on Cyberpunk yet, but The Witcher 3 being "different" from Doom doesn't excuse how shallow it is. It can still be "different" and be a deep game, but it isn't because it's poorly designed. CDPR is obviously more concerned with telling a film story than they are designing engaging gameplay systems. Most of TW3 was: Listen to someone talk, ride a mile across its giant, most empty, non-functional world, mash fast attack on some enemies, ride a mile back, listen to more talking, repeat ad nauseum.
And the first The Last of Us was even worse. It actively encouraged players to avoid gameplay and actually interacting whenever possible, and played like dogshit when you actually had to fight something. No interplay, terrible AI, and no depth or dynamics to speak of. And that's when you weren't being forced to sit and watch people talk for long stretches.
No matter what kind of game it is, there are things that ALL video games can do to be objectively deeper and higher-functioning, i.e. to be better games.
|
Gallantin
03.26.20 | "Being different genres with different core gameplay doesn't mean that aren't still built from the same core design concepts that define video games as a medium (mechanics, interplay, dynamics, etc.)"
Ah yes, all games are comparable because they have *checks notes* mechanics |
Gallantin
03.26.20 | Lol at your little objectivity speech there also
You're clearly a MauLer fan |
thedoom
03.26.20 | @Alondite then how do you even begin to compare a game like Doom Eternal with for example Life is Strange? It would be completely ridiculous to claim one game is objectively better than the other... |
Gallantin
03.26.20 | Woah man, don't get him started. Both games have mechanics AND dynamics. It'd be dumb NOT to compare them.
Let's face it, we're not smart enough to go toe to toe with this mind genius. |
thedoom
03.26.20 | I guess Life is Strange only wants to tell a film story and Doom has more enemy types so it’s not even a question really... |
Wildcardbitchesss
03.26.20 | “ And the first The Last of Us was even worse. It actively encouraged players to avoid gameplay and actually interacting whenever possible, and played like dogshit when you actually had to fight something. Yeah this whole paragraph is fucking stupid. |
Alondite
03.26.20 | @thedoom I'm not even sure I'd call Life is Strange a game, per se, because it doesn't really have interplay. Its choices are about as much a gameplay mechanic as is turning a page in a book. That's not a knock against it, just that it doesn't make sense to compare a game to something that is trying to be something else entirely.
@Gallatin: So you're going to imply that a a deeper video game isn't better than a shallow one? Both The Witcher 3 and The Last of Us could be deeper games without having to sacrifice anything that they are at their core with more thoughtful design. They both leave a ton of design potential on the table.
@Wildcard: Very informative. TLoU discourages enemy encounters when they aren't mandatory and has no stealth interplay, so exactly how is any of that wrong? Their AI is also about as intelligent as artificial dirt clods. Halo: Combat Evolved has better AI...in a game from 2001 on virtually archaic hardware. Naughty Dog are more interested in their cutscenes than they are their game. |
Gallantin
03.26.20 | Depth is subjective. And depth doesn't necessarily equate to quality. The gameplay depth of Doom may be deeper to me than that of Animal Crossing, but that doesn't mean I believe Doom is the superior game.
"I'm not even sure I'd call Life is Strange a game, per se, because it doesn't really have interplay"
Have you just looked up a series of design buzzwords without any idea of how to use them? Mechanics, interplay, dynamics. You're using them but I don't think you know what they mean. |
Gallantin
03.26.20 | "TLoU discourages enemy encounters when they aren't mandatory and has no stealth interplay, so exactly how is any of that wrong?"
LOL what do you think this sentence means? What is "stealth interplay"? Interplay with WHAT? What do you want the stealth to interplay with? The game allows you to kill while in stealth. Bam, two gameplay mechanics interplaying. The game allows you to distract enemies in stealth, another two. The game allows you use sound and speed to your advantage, sightlines based on the location of Joel's chest while crouching, etc. There are dozens of mechanics interplaying in any video game every single moment. Do you know what you're even talking about?
How are you comparing Halo AI to Last of Us AI? Both games wants its enemies doing different things. You can argue about the quality of TLoU's AI, but why this comparison? It makes no sense. In what way is Halo's AI better? By what measurement are you comparing their quality?
The Last of Us isn't a stealth game. The unique thing about TLoU's stealth is that when it's broken, it doesn't feel like game over. It's not MGS or Splinter Cell where you feel the need to restart if you're caught. Stealth breaking in TLoU just means the setpiece is moving into another phase. Combat is not a consequence of poor design, it's another phase of that design. The combat in TLoU always feels pretty desparate. It's rigid and and the guns have low ammo counts at all times. It's actually one of the more meaningful third person shooter combat systems because of how its systems interplay. Broken bottles aren't used for distractions now, they're used as desparate weapons when you're out of ammo. Chest high walls aren't used for stealth anymore, they're used to stop you from dying in a couple of shots.
You can dislike these games all you want, but please stop trying to sound smart in the most idiotic way possible. |
Alondite
03.27.20 | OK, well given that you've just described basic cover and shooting mechanics as if they are somehow evidence of TLoU's quality, incorrectly used the term "interplay" multiple times, believe that depth is subjective, and insulted me because I said a game you like was bad, I'm done having this conversation.
It's clear that you lack the requisite understanding to even be having this discussion, and I've wasted my time having this discussion with people unfit to have too many times to waste my time here.
For the record:
Interplay: The back-and-forth interaction between player-executed mechanics and the game's response.
Depth: Functionally unique game states with different interactive opportunities achieved by interacting with the surface state. The more unique states achievable through repeated interaction without reverting to a previous state, or ending the interaction, the deeper the interaction. It's literally measurable. The Koopa Paratroopa in Super Mario Bros can support up to 7 unique states of increasing depth by interacting with it in different ways.
I'm not trying to sound like anything, I'm just expressing what I've observed to be true using the terminology that best describes it. But because you disagree, I'm inherently wrong and "an idiot," even though you've done nothing to prove otherwise and are just begging the question. And spoiler alert: It's OK to like mediocre games. Not sure why you're so threatened by liking a mediocre game that you have to insult me, but whatever. You exemplify the Dunning-Kruger effect.
If you can get over your ego and painfully wrong assumption that you actually know what you're talking about and are interested in actually learning something, then here are the best game design resources available anywhere

Don't expect another response from me, because frankly, I don't care enough to continue; Doom Eternal isn't going to beat itself on Nightmare. |
Gallantin
03.27.20 | "Interplay: The back-and-forth interaction between player-executed mechanics and the game's response."
So you mean literally any action the player makes?
You're saying that these games you dislike have no "interplay", i.e. these games have no mechanics that react the player's input? THAT'S what you're trying to say?
I read that game development dictionary you linked that you've been quoting verbatim, you're so stupid you don't even understand what it means when it's telling you a dictionary definition of these words you're pretending to use. Reading this dictionary doesn't make you an expert on game design, especially when you misinterpret the definitions and examples it gives you.
Depth is subjective, and the term depth is even arguable. Just because you read an article on a website that attempts to define it (again, subjectively), does not mean that article is the be-all end-all regarding the CONCEPT of depth. Depth is not an objective measurement here, it is a theoretical concept applied to an interactive medium.
One could argue your definition of depth is actually breadth. Your obsession with this idea of depth being a indicator of quality is also bizarre.
Jesus fucking christ imagine reading a decade old gaming blog and thinking you're a fucking game dev expert because of it. Better yet, imagine believing in objectively quality between subjective elements. |

03.28.20 | couldn’t have said it better myself gallantin.
dude must be playing the game on easy or something. No one that’s played on survival or grounded especially would talk shit on the gameplay.

04.02.20 | Not sure if it was a glitch or what, but I couldn't use the yellow gore key at the Super Gore Cell. Restarted the mission... same thing. It finally worked the third try. But the third retry I made sure to blast everything. |

ConcubinaryCode
04.06.20 | Fuck, just beat the icon of sin. That bastard was hard as hell mostly because the game straight up says fuck it and puts about 20 heavies in the area while you're avoiding the aoe fire. The ballista saved my ass so many times through the campaign though. |
ConcubinaryCode
04.06.20 | Also anyone use the frost, flamethrower than sawed off combo? That was a big one for me too. |

04.06.20 | game is amazing, marauder can suck my dick tho |
ConcubinaryCode
04.06.20 | They have way too much health. When I was fucking around with codes I could instagib any demon in the game with one shot. Marauder still took 4-5 shots. It's ridiculous. I also hate their stupid ghost wolves.
That said I appreciate the ability to fly through levels to get those collectibles. Would've been nice to have fast travel from the start of the level though but that's just a nitpick. |
Pikazilla
04.06.20 | Marauders aren't hard if you know you should stay at mid-distance from them all the time. |
ConcubinaryCode
04.06.20 | They're not hard, they're annoying. It's hard to measure "mid distance too" since 80% of my time fighting them they'll either just throw a bolt or dog at you. I did find out the grenade falters them which is useful. |
Gallantin
04.07.20 | They'll only use the dog if you shoot their shield lol
Don't shoot their shield |
Gallantin
04.07.20 | i.e. use AOE weapons to shoot behind them when their shield is up so you can stagger them for a 1-2 punch with the super shotgun and ballista |
Gallantin
04.07.20 | As for knowing what the right distance is: you have a super shotgun. You, presumably, know what distance works with that gun. Stay that distance away from a marauder to avoid theirs. |
Gallantin
04.07.20 | So basically you can use the BFG to shoot over their head and behind them, or use the rocket launcher to shoot to their side and behind them, then use your super shotgun and ballista in their face. |
Element
05.10.20 | marauders are just pace breakers, they just don't play well with the design that doom eternal facilitates. |
