Favorite European Films

topic is european films, some of them are not the most well-known ones but they are Aileen's choices. description is not professional I am bad at writing. and list is ranked! if you wanna explore something more official Sight & Sound poll and BFI ranks can maybe help, but they don't list these items. recommendation or comments or discussion are very welcome. I can collect all the comments (if there will be any) and make an exclusive sputnik user film list!

Everchanger

Subway (1985) France
Adventure / Crime / Romance
Luc Besson, fantasy in paris undereground, lots of charming weirdos in this.
10Sleeping With Sirens
With Ears to See and Eyes to Hear

A Room with a View (1985) England
Romance / Sightseeing
James Ivory, it is all about elegency
9Woe, Is Me
Number[s]

Les choristes (2004) France
Kids / Teaching / Music
Christophe Barratier. you know, sports and music are important elements of national unity. okay it is not related to the movie. but most of the time it works. eye-leaking film
8Hands Like Houses
Ground Dweller

Die Blechtrommel (1979) Germany
War / Surreal
Volker Schlöndorff. Jean-Claude Carrière as screenwriter
visual translation of the epic book. how could it be possible? though i have my complain about the missing content of the book, this is the best magic realism ever made.
7Tides of Man
Dreamhouse

Profondo rosso (1975) Italy
Crime / Thriller
been considered as best giallo film, best of Dario Argento, surprisingly, I do agree.
6Emarosa
Versus

La boulangère de Monceau (1963) France
Romance
1st tale of Eric Rohmer's six moral tales, don't overrate morality. you need a big heart to go through the moral tales. it removes the masks bit by bit till the ugliness in humanity is there completely naked. this is the only tale which is told in a confession way, very shocking effect.
5Call It Home
Just A Dream

Asphalt (1929) Germany
Romance
Joe May was actually from Austria i just knew, one of German expressionism's best, imo, it is very not well-known. the scale is not as epic as Metropolis, the place in history not as important as Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, but that year the film industry in Berlin was mature enough even with giant studio set to reach a breathtakingly smooth road traffic scene. costed lots of money back then. so it is technically well-made. silent films are greatly enjoyable to me because such performance could not be found again nowadays. and the actress in this one can just remote control your emotion by her facial expression.
4When Bears Attack!
Elisha

Il postino (1994) Italy
Romance / Poetry
maybe the best romance i can ever think of. but it is way more than that. you know you don't want the film to lecture you all the ideas of epicness, freedom, love, friendship, humanity stuff. but it just form the strength in your mind. you will get it so naturally after the tale. beautiful one.
3Hands Like Houses
Unimagine

Tesis (1996) Spain
Thiller
sometimes I wonder if Alejandro Amenábar is a genius since forever. he did everything in this. script / directing / score / camera. it is also his thesis work of movie school. the speechless-level talent in this one is flooding out of the screen for it is just too much
2Emarosa
Emarosa

Turks fruit (1973) Holland
Romance / Comedy
it is an erotic movie! yes, but it is actually the romance with deepest emotions. they were so in love! after this one Paul Verhoeven went to hollywood and seemed never back to the root to tell the charm of Amsterdam. also no one reached the level of being bold like this one ever reached. but it is cleverly softened with humor.
1Call It Home
Unfamiliar

Deep End (1970) England
Romance
it is another erotic movie!! no it is not. The whole tone is very charming, the lens captures the heartbeat of first love. I think everyone will be related so it is ranked as no.1. the end is unbelievably dramatic. but that's still the most brilliant ending Aileen has ever seen.
