Ranking favourite bands: Top 10 DT albums

My personal ranking of my 10 favourite Dream Theater albums. Dream Theater is by far one of my most cherished progressive metal acts and this list contains my most beloved 10 Dream Theater albums.
10Dream Theater
A Dramatic Turn of Events

Although the mix has, fairly, received some criticism and although this album marks the start of the arguably less succesful Mangini era, it still contains some stellar tracks, especially Breaking All illusions comes to mind.
9Dream Theater
Systematic Chaos

This paradoxically named album ist still a solid outing Dream Theater. It contains James LaBrie's best vocal performances and some seriously amazing tracks; Ministry of Lost Souls comes to mind. This album certainly doesn't deserve the hate it sometimes receives. Pretty great work of art.
8Dream Theater
Distance Over Time

Funnily enough one of the first Dream Theater albums I ever owned a physical copy of (I have only recently started actively collecting albums). Altough their past discography most certainly contains far better work, this album is one of the better recently released albums. Besides, some of the riffs on this thing are exceedingly scintillating; At Wit's End anyone?
7Dream Theater
Black Clouds and Silver Linings

One of the most personal Dream Theater albums out there, which contains some of their most memorable moments. Especially some of the riffs on this albums are beyond fantastic: so groovy and simultaneously so heavy. Fantastic album overall.
6Dream Theater
Octavarium

Another quite good album in my humble opinion. It features one of the most well-written and 'headbangable' tracks Dream Theater has ever written (talking about Panick Attack of course), as well as probably one of the most mind-blowing tracks in their discography: Octavarium. Excellent stuff.
5Dream Theater
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

Experimental, profoundly proggy, all over the place, yet fantastically composed and containing some of my favourite Dream Theater tracks. Absolutely extraordinary work of music. One of the best double albums ever made.
4Dream Theater
Awake

Although this is perhaps lower on my list than it will be on other list ranking DT albums, this album is nevertheless fantastic in some many ways. Some many great tracks and moments. Remarkable album.
3Dream Theater
Train of Thought

My undisputed third-favourite Dream Theater album. Some people may dislike the somewhat more brutal and heavy approach of this album, however for me, it demonstrates a different and arguably more interesting side of Dream Theater's musical scope, which hadn't been shown in this way before. The compositional structures, the lyrical content, the mind-bending solo work, it's all there in spades. Fantastic stuff!
2Dream Theater
Images and Words

My introduction to Dream Theater and, to me, one of the finest progressive metal records ever created, which set the stage for all of the astonishing things Dream Theater was yet to present to the world. Love every track from this album.
1Dream Theater
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory

One of the best concept albums ever created. The best album Dream Theater has ever made by a mile. Just magical in every way, whether its the musicianship, the composition, the melodies or the amount of emotional severity it communicates to the listener. One of my favourite albums of all time.
