Round 4: Season 2: Continental Rec Tournament

Alright Diva comes back from the dead and stays alive with a pretty risky pick but somehow manages to stay in. Let us now go to the land down under and find some good Australian music.

Another one that took multiple listens to grow before I could really appreciate it. At first this seemed limp-dicked and without a lot of edge. Over time the variation keeps me coming back to Stoneage Romeos. What it lacks in intensity (as far as punk rock goes I guess) it makes up for in different styles and sounds. There is a gargantuan difference between songs like Death Ship and Zanzibar and Arthur. Very catchy tunes with an abundance of solid melodies and a charismatic sort of slightly overconfident laidbackness that permeates the vibe. Not what I was hoping for or even expecting but a good one nonetheless.

The most ass-kicking of the round. Doesn’t really let up for the entire record. But don’t let that fool you into thinking this is some sort of noisy slopfest. This is a clever little record that has a lot to give. For instance I’m pretty sure their name is a reference to the Sex Pistols. The songs are hard but smart and catchy. Lots of cool brass instruments make cameos as well as some keys and shit. Mostly this record bangs you over the head very viciously and quickly but doesn’t it in memorable way. Not a bad song in the bunch and the closing track God Squad with its wah wah solo, biting lyrics, creepy church opening, general intensity, and it’s musical scope have made it one of my favorite current songs. Pretty much exactly what I was looking for this round and more.

Another one of divas pop rock albums. They can be pretty hit or miss for me. It’s eother 80s pop perfection or 80s pop putrid puke. This ones the former. Super delicious guitar all over this record. Absolutely gorgeous work here from that guy. Even in songs that totally suck like Lost he can completely save with just one cool lick. I liked this one right away and it keeps getting better. Songs might be a tad too long and a little melodramatic but that mostly just adds to the overall feel. It is one of those albums you need to be in the mood for but when you are in that mood it hits just right. Great music to drive to as well.

Well... you had a good run sloth but this was a complete dud and the competition was way too stacked for you. This seemed more indie rock or emo than punk to me. The songs are all about serious things like relationships and siblings and shit like that with a bunch of fucking ship metaphors and whatnot. It’s got a little bit of punk rock energy on the music and some of the riffs are even kinda cool but usually the vocalist ruins it with his over the top earnestness and bare honesty. The songs are so goddamn long with the B side consisting almost entirely of 5+ minute songs. I felt embarrassed listening to this. I get why people would like this and maybe I would have even liked this when I was younger and depressed but this doesn’t do anything for me and every time I put it on I just want it to end. Sorry my dude.
