06.12.19 | I don't necessarily agree, it must depend on the artist/genre. That Deathspell record (for instance) has 221 votes already despite only being out a few weeks. Their previous record (released in 2016) achieved 180 votes between 31st Oct (the date of the first rating) and the end of Dec. i.e. a longer time-frame.
I've noticed it with other artists in the past too... maybe it's a metal thing? Not sure. |

Then again there is some bias to that, albums that have been around for longer obviously gather more ratings over time, including from temporarily active users. Still get the feeling that the user count is going down - would be interested to know how many active raters there are left on here. I don't know of a single 2018 album that reached 1000+ ratings. There's still a significant number of peeps around - 2017 Brand New has over 1.6k ratings -, but very few albums reach more than a couple hundred ratings now |

I'm ok with the community being small (in the few thousands) because as you say it is quite obscure music we talk about here. In fact I wouldn't want the site to gain 100k users that would completely shift what the community likes and what albums are well rated. I don't like that that small user base to start with is gradually going even smaller though. |

I think the count is low among us, but if anything since I've started a couple years ago the community feels tighter with a lot less trolls. I think it's low but that it'll rise up again in a few years, I'm sure it comes and goes no?

could also be that users' tastes and digs rarely converge, thus their ratings are spread thin across a multitude of albums, whereas with staple bands like those everybody rates the same album and the total number of raters becomes more visible as it adds up. Probably a combination of both tbh

I don't entirely disagree with this (I'm sure it happens) but there are surely other factors too. Personally when a release gets hyped and has an exceedingly high average, I check it almost regardless of genre, that means I'm often listening to stuff I'd usually have little interest in and thus the results are a mixed bag. i.e. this often results in me awarding lower ratings. |
