10 Metal albums EVERYONE should hear

Not just for the metalheads. IDGAF if you're some pencil thin hipster with 37% indie rock in your pie charts. If you like music, you need to hear these 10 albums to better understand music as a whole.
1Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath

This is the first metal album ever, so obviously this makes sense. It's also still one of the best nearly 50 years later.
2Black Sabbath
Paranoid

Black Sabbath expand on and define their sound with one of the best rock albums ever made, featuring several songs that are still being talked about today.
3Iron Maiden
The Number of the Beast

Another fantastic release featuring front-to-back classics in the metal genre, from one of the genres most important bands. A lot of what makes metal what it is can be heard here.
4Metallica
Ride the Lightning

This album took metal to a whole new level, with riffs that were at the time monstrous and are still now worth a good headbang. Everything that made Metallica the top of the metal game can be heard on this album.
5Megadeth
Rust in Peace

Ranked the 9th best album OAT by this very website and the #1 best album OAT by The Onion, it would be foolish to overlook Megadeth's fourth album that took thrash metal in a very technical and precise direction.
6Slayer
Reign in Blood

This is where shit gets real. Back when it first came out, nothing had ever been as heavy. This album took metal to the extreme, and has since become one of the most important albums in the rock genre.
7Pantera
Vulgar Display of Power

Like many others featured on this list, Pantera's 6th album is still being talked about to this day. Most of modern metal can be traced back to this very album, featuring some of finest moments of legendary guitarist Dimebag Darrell.
8Opeth
Blackwater Park

Opeth are a different beast compared to the other bands on this list. Blackwater Park views metal in a more artistic light, one that has made it appreciated as one of the finest metal albums ever made.
9System of a Down
Toxicity

One of the last big mainstream metal bands also put out one the last great metal albums. Though nothing too revolutionary, Toxicity features a very unique sound that helped it punch through to mainstream listeners while also staying planted firmly in the hearts of metalheads.
10Death
Symbolic

Last but certainly not least is the 6th album from the godfather of death metal, Death. Frontman Chuck Schuldiner really outlined the power and beauty that extreme metal was hiding. If you ever have to hear one death metal album, make it Symbolic.
