03.19.19 | This is something I've always struggled with. I've had a very good life and don't have anything personal that yells out to me "This needs to be shared". I want to be a part of the creative process, but almost feel like I don't deserve to, if that makes sense? Most of the time when I write, it's about the experiences of other people. |

03.19.19 | Based on the albums above you wanna write sad lyrics. Sadly, a lot of the best lyric do come from real life experience – faking it is normally really obvious. Write what you know, there's more out there to write about than heartbreak and depression.
If you are a good story teller, and can write good lyrics from a third party's POV, there's nothing wrong with that.

03.19.19 | I agree brother, very hard indeed. I've always wondered what most people do. Songwriting always takes me forever because of this process and it rarely comes 'naturally' to me. I find it's typically easier to write the music, then lyrics, then melodies. |

03.19.19 | ^Amen to both of those things. I always find sad lyrics so much more engaging. Maybe it's because I'm generally a happy and optimistic person. People are always shocked when I share music with them, because it goes so hard against my "type", for lack of a better term. |

03.19.19 | Hmmm. Are you secretly Dylan Matthiesen from TMP? The name is close enough... |

03.19.19 | I can never sit down with nothing and write things out, it always has to start with a spontaneous idea, otherwise i will draw a total blank. I always have a bunch of lyrics sitting around, so most of the time ill fit lyrics ive already written into a song. once in awhile ill come up with lyrics on the spot over guitar parts i have written. |

03.19.19 | Also if you don't do a lot of writing in general – whether it's scribbling half baked ideas or penning high fantasy novels – then don't be surprised that writing is hard. It's a skill like any other, just keep writing and you'll get better at it. |

03.19.19 | @ButtBoy Oh man I wish. Lyrically, "Dakota" may be one of my favorite songs ever and actually sums up this whole dilemma quite well lol.
@AdolfChrist (What a name) That's interesting! My spontaneous writing will give me a line or tow, but never a whole song. Is that similar to what you're saying? |
Deathconscious
03.19.19 | Yeah, after the first couple lines its a little more thought out usually. But i need that initial spontaneous idea to spark inspiration and get the creative juices flowing. |
butt.
03.19.19 | Yeah, that's sometimes how it goes with me too ^ |

03.19.19 | Yeah, I have so many like three line stanzas down that I love, but just can’t expand on. Glad to know I’m not alone there.
And @Sitar I mean you’re not wrong |

03.19.19 | 99% of the time it's the song structure + melodies first. Then coming up with the words to fit those melodies. |

03.19.19 | Idea comes first, write the song around it by agonizing for weeks.
And drugs. |

03.19.19 | i usually use a pen and paper |

03.19.19 | Also yeah coming from personal experiences is essential, but personal experiences can come from a third person POV as well. Write about what gets you worked up. |

03.19.19 | I usually use words. |
Kompys2000
03.19.19 | I generally start with words and build the rest around that but I've done it the other way around too, where I have some melodic phrase or chord progression that I later write words to match. |
