parksungjoon
02.11.19 | capital punishment destroys, rest in peace big pun |
Hawks
02.11.19 | Late 90’s-early 00’s is seriously so under appreciated. I love late 80’s/early 90’s too but this is the era I remember most fondly. |
Keyblade
02.11.19 | yea same, this is what i grew up on |
Hawks
02.11.19 | I remember getting Country Grammar on cassette when it first came out. Fuck time flies. |
rabidfish
02.11.19 | early 2000's nostalgia starting to set in already, wouldn't surprise me to see many of these revisited in the next 2-3 years.

EyesWideShut
02.11.19 | awesome list and your description of Stillmatic is spot on haha but why no mention of that infamous pigeon in the corner yo.. |
EphemeralEternity
02.11.19 | There was actually an assload of good shit released during this time, I suppose the novelty’ of rap/hip hop had blown over after the explosion in the early- mid 90s.
I guess a lot of the greats were firing blanks relative to their earlier output too, tho I’m thinking that often with hip hop more so than other genres people stick to the artists classics so they don’t even give other releases the time of day or go into them with such tainted expectations. |
Trundle
02.11.19 | baaaaaaaaaaam, list is tight |
brainmelter
02.11.19 | god bless |

02.12.19 | DO YOU WANT A REVOLUTION? (WOO WOO)

02.12.19 | List also needs The Pimp & Da Gangsta by Dirty. Prob the most under appreciated rap classic ever. Everyone jam if you haven’t yet. |
Keyblade
02.12.19 | haven't even heard that, looks dope |
Hawks
02.12.19 | BRO GET ON IT NOW.
Top 10-15 rap album ever for me hands down. |
Hawks
02.12.19 | Actually 2001 is prob the most underrated year for rap in general to me. So many classics released that year that don’t get enough attention. |
EyesWideShut
02.12.19 | can add Mystikal's Lets Get Ready and for an underrated joint Young Bleed's My Own. |
Ecnalzen
02.12.19 | Heck yeah, love me some Aaliyah, Outkast, Missy E, and Lauryn Hill.
"Mos Def - Black on Both Sides" and "Roots - Things Fall Apart" both released in 1999 if you are into it, unless you are trying to go for the more obscure side of the years. |
Hawks
02.12.19 | Take It or Squeeze It by The Beatnuts is another one from 2001 that doesn’t get enough love damn. |

Storm In A Teacup
02.13.19 | I didn't look at what was on the list all I'm saying is "90s rap lol" |
Keyblade
02.13.19 | well yea, '90's rap' usually just means 'early to mid 90's' rap...which is what i was trying to illustrate here
it's like hip hop died in 96 and was revived by kendrick in 2012 or some shit if u were to believe the internet |
SmurkinGherkin
02.13.19 | fuck yeah craig david

Verm, take a look around. we're on a major music review/discussion site and 2 for example doesn't even have a review and ~50 ratings. a 7x platinum album. ofc a lot of these got love in their day and even today from regular peeps and heads alike, but not from "music heads" for whatever reason
anyway, how u feeling about my boy OGS? |
JasonCarne

Keyblade
02.13.19 | I tried to move the focus away from the underground, as a lot of those u mentioned are the few that are appreciated on music sites anyway
also I foolishly tried to keep it to 66 albums so there's that lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.14.19 | For me these are the last years of a lot of golden era artists good material, or when they were already getting bad, and when new hip hop was staring to go one of the worst routes |
bigguytoo9
02.14.19 | Man I used to own a MA$E record back then. Fuck yeah! |
random
02.14.19 | Aqua's "Aquarium" and "Aquarius" are probably both on Amazon for 1 cent now. |

03.01.19 | Hieroglyphics is so good |
Drifter
03.01.19 | Jammed the second half of Blueprint 1 today. Classic classic album |
theNateman
04.19.19 | Claims 97-01 most underrated year in hip hop. Completely leaves out MF doom, Atmosphere, El-P, cannibal ox, deltron 3030, mos def, and Doc Octagon. |
Keyblade
04.19.19 | MF Doom debut, 900 ratings and 4 reviews
No Way Out, 50 ratings and 0 reviews
that's the point I was making. those guys u mentioned get plenty of love in the internet era whereas the records that went diamond at the time are forgotten |
GodLovesUgly
08.08.19 | Dope shit! |
Keyblade
08.08.19 | my man
u just reminded me i need to turn this into a playlist |
Drifter
08.08.19 | 98 probably is the most underrated year in hip hop. It was like the second 96 everyone was dropping some kind of project, especially those on no limit lol |
Keyblade
08.08.19 | lmao autechretoolaesop, that combo tho |
VlacDrac
01.08.21 | Great list. |
Keyblade
01.08.21 | thanks dawg. should make a playlist of this one if these days |
ieatbabies795
01.08.21 | Where’s Busta Rhymes, his early stuff was great
Great list, maybe it’s overlooked because some of these releases were overshadowed by the ‘bling-bling’ era? |
ieatbabies795
01.08.21 | I’ve fallen out of hip-hop as a genre but I’m gonna revisit some of these and maybe check out ones I haven’t heard |
combustion07
01.08.21 | Definitely a solid era for rap and the era I really came up on. Ludacris- Back for the First Time was the pinnacle for me back then. Props for 11 too. Love that album |
VlacDrac
01.08.21 | I'm listening to Harlem World right now, it's a decent album with good beats, but Jealous Guy it's fucking horrible. |
VlacDrac
01.08.21 | Nevertheless, this is a good list and I'll check some more albums on it, as you said, this is an overlooked era in rap, especially when it comes to the bigger names in the genre back then, not necessarily the underground stuff as you have pointed out before. |
VlacDrac
01.08.21 | 25 is fucking crazy, tho. Amazing album and way ahead of its time. |
Keyblade
09.07.22 | man it's crazy, when I first started listening to 60 back in the day I felt hip, now I feel like a boomer lmao |
