Forgotten era of hip hop

the year is 1997. Aqua is dominating the pop charts, the Spice Girls make their debut, but it was hip hop that was poised to completely take over the public conscience, kicking off what is imo the most underrated era from between 1997-2001. list is favs from that era (+ some rnb)
1The Notorious B.I.G.
Life After Death

1997
the death of 2pac the previous year rattled the hip hop community and seemed to take west coast hip hop with it. g-funk was completely out of style by this point and would seemingly leave one Notorious B.I.G. with a clear path to the throne. even his untimely death later that year couldn't stop this album and its singles from dominating the charts
2Puff Daddy
No Way Out

1997
that is until Puffy came through with this pop rap juggernaut and went 7x platinum, ushering in a new era of floss raps and shiny suits. the east coast was back on top
3Mase
Harlem World

1997
Bad Boy had that year completely on lock
4Jay-Z
In My Lifetime, Vol. 1

1997
it even prompted Jay-Z to ditch his underground sound and enlist Puffy to produce on his album
5Wu-Tang Clan
Wu-Tang Forever

1997
the Wu dropped their sophomore album that year and had some classic hits like Triumph
6LL Cool J
Phenomenon

1997
4,3,2,1 introduced the world to a young DMX and featured a high profile beef between LL and Canibus
7Missy Elliott

1997
great debut with sick production by Timbaland that broke all kinds of records going 6x platinum
8Three 6 Mafia
