10s Year Ranking - In Progress

Which year of the 10s is top dog? How high will 2019 rank come the 1st January 2020? Overall I'd say currently the '10s are fourth in my list of favourite decades behind the '90s, the '80s and the '70s. They're above the '60s because ok, the sixties are miles away from the fifties but still sound a bit too antiquated to me...so I haven't been drawn in to explore them enough yet. The '10s are above the '00s because the '00s are a bit weak in terms of depth. Percentage scores for albums taken from my AOTY account: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/doofy/
1The National
High Violet

2010:

My arbitrary score out of 10 where 1994 (my favourite year) would score a full 10/10: [5.5/10]

Current Top Ten:

1. The National - High Violet (97%)
2. Beach House - Teen Dream (90%)
3. Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest (88%)
4. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today (86%)
5. Emeralds - Does it Look Like I'm Here (86%)
6. Sleigh Bells - Treats (85%)
7. John Grant - Queen of Denmark (85%)
8. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs (83%)
9. Daughters - Daughters (83%)
10. Women - Public Strain (82%)

Current Ranking: 6th

A strong top ten but absolutely no depth in quality to it in terms of what I've explored beyond that, at least so far. Basically a more than decent top 20 then nothing. Nothing at all.
2Destroyer
Kaputt

2011:

My arbitrary score out of 10: [6.5/10]

Current Top 10:

1. Destroyer - Kaputt (100%)
2. John Maus - We Must Become... (94%)
3. Bon Iver - Bon Iver (91%)
4. Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost (87%)
5. Tom Waits - Bad as Me (85%)
6. Wild Beasts - Smother (85%)
7. War on Drugs - Slave Ambient (84%)
8. Oneohtrix Point Never - Replica (82%)
9. Nicolas Jaar - Space is Only Noise (82%)
10. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues (81%)

Current Ranking: 3rd

This year boasts the number one best album of the decade, which helps a lot. The three albums next in the ranking are all very close to my heart too. Beyond that there's an ok top thirty of releases and not a lot more from what I've explored. One of the better years of the '10s for sure though.
3Paul Buchanan
Mid Air

2012:

My arbitrary score out of 10: [2.5/10]

Current Top 10:

1. Paul Buchanan - Mid Air (95%)
2. The North Sea Scrolls - The North Sea Scrolls (86%)
3. Lambchop - Mr. M (85%)
4. Grizzly Bear - Shields (85%)
5. Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold (84%)
6. Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid (83%)
7. Niechęć - Smierc w miekkim futerku (82%)
8. Beach House - Bloom (81%)
9. Hot Chip - In Our Heads (81%)
10. Tindersticks - The Something Rain (80%)

Current Ranking: 9th (soon to be 10th)

An absolutely rotten, butt awful year where I could barely dredge up a top 10. This was the year I thought music might be dead...this is possibly worse than the worst year of the '00s!! 2012 still gives me nightmares.
4The National
Trouble Will Find Me

2013:

My arbitrary score out of 10: [5/10]

Current Top 10:

1. The National - Trouble Will Find Me (99%)
2. The Tiger Lillies - Either/Or (95%)
3. Darkside - Psychic (86%)
4. Cass McCombs - Big Wheel and Others (86%)
5. Bill Callahan - Dream River (85%)
6. Julia Holter - Loud City Song (85%)
7. Jason Isbell - Southeastern (83%)
8. The Drones - I See Seaweed (81%)
9. Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven (80%)
10. Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels (80%)

Current Ranking: 7th

Not the strongest top 10 but a solid year beyond that, I can compile a decent enough top 40 albums for this one. Also it boasts the best albums from The National and Tiger Lilles - so some doofcore legends there. Still, I'm hoping to find some more gems from this one as currently a middle hitter.
5Sun Kil Moon
Benji

2014:

My arbitrary score out of 10: [3.5/10]

Current Top 10:

1. Sun Kil Moon - Benji (96%)
2. Run the Jewels - RtJ 2 (86%)
3. Tiger Lillies - Lulu (86%)
4. Cloud Nothings - Here and Nowhere Else (84%)
5. War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream (83%)
6. Ariel Pink - Pom Pom (83%)
7. Mac DeMarco - Salad Days (81%)
8. Aphex Twin - Syro (80%)
9. Sleaford Mods - Divide and Exit (78%)
10. Timber Timbre - Hot Dreams (78%)

Current Ranking: 8th

Not good. Not good at all. 'Benji' is an absolute stunner but beyond that...we're scraping. I didn't include the Gavin Clark comp as most of that material was recorded before this decade. No, there's no getting around it, no escaping the fact that...so far I've found very little greatness from 2014. Still - it isn't 2012, it has that. Plus it boasts maybe the best pure 'rock' album of the decade in 'Here and Nowhere Else' - that's worth an extra .5 on my rating straight away.
6Oneohtrix Point Never
Garden of Delete

2015:

My arbitrary score out of 10: [6/10]

Current Top 10:

1. Oneohtrix Point Never - Garden of Delete (96%)
2. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell (95%)
3. Destroyer - Poison Season (88%)
4. Everything Everything - Get to Heaven (87%)
5. Father John Misty - I Love You Honeyboo (86%)
6. The Membranes - Dark Matter Dark Energy (85%)
7. Elvis Depressedly - New Alhambra (85%)
8. Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat - Most Important Place... (82%)
9. Kendrick Lamar - To Pump a Butterchurn (81%)
10. George Clanton - 100% Electronica (79%)

Current Ranking: 5th

Ok, the years from 2015 on have the dubious advantage in that I was signed up to Sput and RYM from this point on. Depth is improved, obscure choices enter the picture to a greater degree. 2015 boasts my favourite electronic and my favourite folk release of the 10s...so it ranks pretty high. The quality does dip alarmingly after the top 9...but it sort of stabilises to the point there's an ok top 50 from this one.
7Lambchop
FLOTUS

2016:

My arbitrary score out of 10: [7.5/10]

Current Top 10:

1. Lambchop - FLOTUS (95%)
2. Nick Cave - Skelton Tree (93%)
3. Bowie - Blackstar (91%)
4. Radiohead - Moon Shaped Pool (89%)
5. Cass McCombs - Mangy Love (87%)
6. Drive-By Truckers - American Band (86%)
7. Niechęć - Niechęć (86%)
8. Run the Jewels - RtJ 3 (85%)
9. Stimming - Alpe Lusia (85%)
10. The Drones - Feelin Kinda Free (85%)

Current Ranking: 1st

The year everyone died...but music rallied. Some big big hitters for 2016, and this time my increased exploration resulted in me finding a solid top 50, maybe even top 60. The first time in this list I've been sad a few albums didn't make the top 10 (Tindersticks, Richmond Fontaine). Definitely a top four year of the decade you'd think?
8Cigarettes After Sex
Cigarettes After Sex

2017:

My arbitrary score out of 10: [7/10]

Current Top 10:

1. Cigarettes After Sex - Cigarettes After Sex (95%)
2. The National - Sleep Well Beast (90%)
3. Destroyer - Ken (89%)
4. Mark Eitzel - Hey Mr Ferryman (88%)
5. Ariel Pink - Dedicated to Bobby J (86%)
6. Fleet Foxes - Crack-Up (86%)
7. Aimee Mann - Mental Illness (86%)
8. Tiger Lillies - Soho (86%)
9. Flotation Toy Warning - Machine That Made Us (85%)
10. Everything Everything - A Fever Dream (85%)

Current Ranking: 2nd

A slightly underwhelming pick for top album of the year compared to the very best of the '10s...but beyond that weakness I'm seeing a strong selection, down to maybe an ok top 70. Definitely another of the better years of the 10s.
9Exit North
Book of Romance and Dust

2018:

My arbitrary score out of 10: [6.5/10]

Current Top 10:

1. Exit North - Book of Romance and Dust (95%)
2. Ben Howard - Noonday Dream (92%)
3. Paddy Hanna - Frankly I Mutate (91%)
4. Thom Yorke - Suspiria (88%)
5. Ex-Isles - Luxury Mass (87%)
6. Tropical Fuck Storm - A Laughing Death... (87%)
7. Gurrumul - Djarimirri: Child of the Rainbow (86%)
8. Low - Double Negative (86%)
9. Eleanor Friedberger - Rebound (85%)
10. A.A.L. (Against All Logic) - 2012 2017 (85%)

Current Ranking: 4th

Not the greatest was it? But...and this is important, I REALLY delved into this year like never before so I'm convinced I have a rather acceptable top 100 for this year. For that reason alone it gets a 6.5 out of 10.
10Lambchop
This (is what I wanted to tell you)

2019:

My arbitrary score out of 10: [?/10]

Predicted Top 10:

1. Lambchop - This (is what I wanted to tell you) (100%)
2. Sleaford Mods - Eton Alive (95%)
3. Cass McCombs - Tip of the Sphere (90%)
4. The Delines - The Imperial (85%)
5. Jessica Pratt - Quiet Signs (85%)
5. Deerhunter - Why Hasn't... (85%)
6. Modest Mouse (85%)
7. My Bloody Valentine (85%)
8. Mark Eitzel (85%)
9. Chromatics - Dear Tommy (85%)
10. Tool (85%)

Current Ranking: 10th

Just a bit of fun with the predictions...will this year be a winner? Watch this space.
