The Umbrella Genre Contest Round 10: Rainy Day Umbrella

2 more out and 4 still in. NO MORE HANDICAPS!
1Tom Waits
Rain Dogs

The rules are simple:

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is blues! Country blues, blues rock, jump blues, delta blues, electric blues, even punk blues. Sad simple music that follows those classic 12 bars.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Thursday night, so if you're late, you're out.

***The winner can recommend me whatever album blah blah you know***

Metaphorical Music

“The Final View” (Minushuman24)

This is chill and trip hoppy as hell and I like the sax and piano. Maybe jazzy even? This is simple so there’s not much else to say here, but it’s super pretty and everything is tightly done and relaxing.

3.8/5 PASSED!

Broken Love Letter

Broken Love Letter (SandwichBubble)

I like crackling in trip hop stuff, so in this hip hop track it’s also pretty pleasant. The rapping isn’t bad or anything, but I’m very neutral on it, just like I am with a lot of rapping. The piano is nerve wracking, but in a good way. Oh this second rapping is kinda annoying actually. Not much variation in the instrumentation though. BUT there’s record scratching which is actually something I love, so bonus points for that! If I liked hip hop more, this would get a fairly high score, but for now it’s just a…

4/5 ROUND WINNER! But Handicaps are gone

Atrocity Exhibition

“Ain't It Funny” (ZombieToyDuck)

Well this is obnoxious. The music is blarring, but not too interesting and his voice is actually not that annoying somehow. Maybe I’m just used to it after hearing him on 2 songs from Wildflower. The music video was cool though. Not my thing at all.

2.6/5 FAILED!

Black on Both Sides

“Mathematics” (bgillesp)

Funky sample with a deep bass, nice! The rapping again I’m neutral on. Yup record scratching is great too. Very simple despite it’s length, so there’s not much else for me to say.

3.8/5 PASSED!

Nigga Please

“Got Your Money” (Grimlin)

Weird voice, but that bass sample is super nice. Simple generic drum beat though. Oh no those R&B vocals are very bland in the most 90s pop way ever. Yeah the sample rules, but this chorus sucks.

2.5/5 FAILED!

“My Story” (NeroCorleone80)

Very modern production and samples. The percussion sounds very thin and tinny. The vocals seem a little lazy. Maybe just lax, but I don’t like it. The jangly sounds just aren’t clicking for me, I don’t know man.

2.2/5 + 0.5 = 2.7/5 PASSED!
