12.01.18 | Copypasta of this month's theme in case you missed it!:
This month I'll carry on the themes that RunOfTheMill implemented last month, but for this month let's go for something a little more cheery. We'll build off of his with some tunes that might come from a place of darkness or sorrow, but ultimately have a more hopeful tone in the end. Of course not necessary, just trying to not have things be as much of a downer while we head into 2019 (;
Let's kick this month's ass guys! |

Rodriguez - Cause (singer-songwriter)
one of the saddest songs ever. still with a hopeful tone

12.01.18 | You're going to make me listen to Coldplay? Damn you!
Whatever, I'm still going for the weird gut.
"Ella Guru" by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band from Trout Mask Replica (blues rock/outsider music)
This song is jubilant as hell. He's in love with a guru girl! It's weird as hell like my last rec, so I expect low scores. Kinda makes me wanna vomit in a good way. :D

It's a Wonderful Life - Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution (folk punk)
For me this is the song that plays in my head when I am with someone that I have feelings for, as lame as that is. But it's a beautiful little bittersweet love song that touches me deeply. |
Papa Universe
12.01.18 | Coldplay - All I Can Think About is You
Actually, not half as annoying as I expected a Coldplay song to be. Then again, nothing much really happen in it at first. It really only picks up in the second half, but what it picks up is actually really good. The music video is much more interesting.

12.01.18 | Murder By Death- Travelin' Far (The Other Shore)

12.01.18 | "All I Can Think About Is You"
Bassy so far that's cool... it's very poppy and trying to go for the whole spacy atmospheric thing. Damn, that piano part is reminds me of Viva La Vida which honestly is overrated as hell. Coldplay, including their early stuff, is just so bland and this is no exception. This song builds up but doesn't really change much outside of that. Ugh. +.1 for the bass.
2.7/5 |
Minushuman24
12.02.18 | 1: All I Can Think About Is You -3.1 Coldplay Oof, I like that bass lots. Oof I like this lots. Ah, the last half was actually quite a bit of a let down. |

Paradox - Suburban Riot Squad(From Riot Squad)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6Vd_h4HOaI
This is probally gonna have a horrible reception. From one of those 'comeback' modern thrash metal bands, this has a lot of energy which I just can't resist. Doesn't have anything to do with the theme, but it's just such a fun jam. |

12.02.18 | All I Can Think About Is You: Kinda bland, but kinda cool. 3.3 |

12.02.18 | “Tartu”
Simple, but chill so far. It's been 4 mins so far and I think I'm listening to the same 20 second loop. Man this made for a good opener, but bad for a 6 min loop. +.1 for it being a nice loop.

12.05.18 | "It's a Wonderful Life"
I don't like these vocals at all, but the instrumentation is engaging. Also, I won't lie: I feel like I'm at a Mexican fiesta while listening to this. 4 mins in and the vocals are turning me off a lot. +.1 for show-offy strings, which is a pleasure here.

12.05.18 | Yeah that works Ars!
but yeah since this is a neeka list not taking 2nd recs until the last moment |

12.05.18 | 2. “Tartu”: Woah, I kinda love this thing. Sure it;s repetitive and overlong, but man I dig what it’s doing. What kind of music is this and why have I been digging it more lately? 4.1
3. “Ella Guru”: “Hahaha let’s just play our instruments badly and offtime so that people we’re think we’re being clever and unique instead of just a basic blues riff.” 2.4
4. “It’s a Wonderful Life”: This is kinda fun, at the same time I see exactly why “folk punk” has a bad name. 3.4
5. “Travelin’ Far”: Definitely a more convincing folk tune than the previous one, this is getting me excited to jam this album for my Cram List! Mmmmmm those strings are nice as hell, still wish it were a bit longer though. 4.2 |

12.05.18 | Sorry, but Neek pulled me back into this.

3.5/5
"Suburban Riot Squad"
Yup, this is thrash metal alright. It probably doesn't help this song's score that I don't like Metallica OR Megadeth. All this reminds me of are those 2 bands.

12.07.18 | 2: Tartu - HMOT - 2.5 Kind of a trance track that loops over and over. Way too long tbh.
3: Ella Guru - Captain Beefheart - 2.7 Cool dirty guitar that kinda jams. Oh it's over. Now this one is way too short.
5: Travelin' Far - Murder by Death - 4.0 Oh man, thank you for this. I love it.... I just only wish it were a bit longer... hm.
6: Suburban Riot Squad - Riot Squad - 2.3 This riff is okay-ish, the vocals aren't great, but I like the production on them a bit, horrible chorus. Oh jesus christ this is 5 minutes?! I'm three minutes in and bored outta my mind. If this were shorter then it would be better, take out the entire middle chorus and keep the shredding end.
7: Farewell Transmission - Magnolia Electric Co - 3.7 This song is definitely great, but It's.... just a bit too long.
I guess I'm having a big trouble with all these run-times this month |

Perhaps not the cheeriest of songs, but one of the most hopeful I've ever heard put to record. An attempt to vindicate (or, at least, understand) someone who lost the trust and support of millions. Party's Fall: Don't have much experience with Goth, but this reminded of the Cure. And I love me some Cure. 4.0
Times of Trouble: Man, these past few tracks were really good and this one is too. Some great grunge here. 3.8

very unique black metal mixed with other genres (post-hardcore? sludge? 12.19.18 | You should... rate it (; |
Egarran
12.19.18 | Snakerhythms - It didn't instantly scare me away which is probably a sign of good jazz. 3
Tonya Harding - Oh Sufjan, my nemesis. He always confronts me with my irrationally hateful side. So if someone ever says 'no one can hate Sufjan' you can direct them to me. 2.8
Scott Street - Cute li'l ditty. 3.5 |

Minushuman24
12.20.18 | 8. Black Woman - Judy Mowatt - 3.8 This is so good, I can see it growing on me further
9. Antares - Stella Luna - 3.3 super fucking spacey and dreamy.
10. Apkallu Counsel - Melechesh - 3 This feels a bit disjointed, but it does have desert vibe, so that's really cool.
11. Cause - Rodriguez - 4 One of the most underrated artists of all time. This is a such a great song.
12. Party's Fall - Siouxsie and the Banshees - 4 I love her so much
13. Times of Trouble - Temple of the Dog - 4.1 This is 90's as heck in all of the best ways.
14. Airwave - Lofty305 - 2 - pass
15. Fly High - The Mad Capsule Markets -
16. Snakerhythms - The Mackrosoft - 3.6 - This was really cool, I just wish there was a bit more? I don't know what my emotions are about it, but I like it.
17. Tonya Harding - Sufjan Stevens - 3.4
18. Scott Street - Phoebe Bridgers- 3.8 This is really pretty
19. Banana Rays - Silver Bullet - 3.2
20. Release - Anacrusis - 3.3 I like this one |

12.20.18 | Snakerythms: The only jazz I was able to get into was Charles Mingus and this reminds me a bit of that. But I can already tell this isn't my type of music. 3.0
Tonya Harding: Those generic vocals put me too sleep, rest is really meh. 2.5
Scott Street: Beautiful. 4.0
Silver Bullet: Decent Indie, not much to say about it. 3.0 |
Metalrain
12.21.18 | The Horror: Sounds like OST music, almost like a disney villain song. Pretty awesome buildup to that climax. 3.8 |

12.22.18 | "Silver Bullett"
Boring forgettable indie's poster child?
2/5
"Release"
More metal great! lol but in all seriousness, the bass is easy to focus on. Gross growling 2 mins in though. Not my thing honestly.
2.4/5
"The Horror"
You know, I actually heard a full album by these guys before because it was one of the winners during one of my 2 pitch contests. The Scarlet Beast O'seven Heads... I gave it a 3/5 and while I far from loved it, the song Disney truly impressed me. So fat the strings here seem very cinematic and not in a cheesy annoying way, so it's off to a good start. Not exactly my thing, but well made regardless.
3.5/5 |
bgillesp
12.22.18 | Silver Bullet- 3.2, A little boring, but not that much. Its still pretty and nice.
Release- 3.8, Nothing too special but definitely some solid proggy thrash.
The Horror- 4.0, I checked this album when it came on because of Papi's review and dug it, but that was a while ago and I'd forgotten what it sounded like. On second listen of this song, I still quite like it with its whimsical feel. |
Papa Universe
12.22.18 | budgie thing: 3.5
The Home Team - She's Quiet: 4 |
ArsMoriendi
12.23.18 | "She's Quiet"
Meh, generic guitar riff so far. An there's the pop punk vocals... ugh. Hate this entire subgenre honestly. Oh no a cheesy acoustic section. Why? :(
2.3/5
"The Curve"
This is dissonant so far hmmm... might as well be perfect compared to the last song so far. I don't like these vocals much though. Kinda bored of this now that I'm in 4 mins in, but somehow it's not actually bothering me. Atmospheric ending is better I guess. +0.1 for that.
2.9/5 |
neekafat
12.23.18 | Eg, I love you, thank you for the ratings, but not putting them into the spreadsheet made me have to update all the avgs twice lmao |

neekafat
12.23.18 | yeah that was pretty good. 22 was not
I wonder if ars looks at his ratings and then at the avgs and realizes that he has objectively bad taste |
ArsMoriendi
12.23.18 | "and realizes that he has objectively bad taste"
It's more like you guys pick the same boring shit over and over and tend to give low scores to anything too outside the box |
ArsMoriendi
12.23.18 | Sorry, that was too harsh
I tend to like Zombie and Butcher's picks a lot, and Minus's usually fare well with me as well.
It's a shame 2/3 of them never rate SotD anymore |
neekafat
12.23.18 | I like to think I have a pretty wide range of tastes
I'd argue that you don't since it's like "eh folk sucks" "I don't get metal therefore it's a 2.3" |
neekafat
12.23.18 | And to be fair that noise rec you put out last month was abysmal even though I dig other stuff in that genre |
ArsMoriendi
12.23.18 | I mean I just 4'd a folk album Nero rec'd me 2 days ago, but okay |
Minushuman24
12.23.18 | I was honestly gonna use Fear's "Fuck Christmas" as my second rec, but since we're past Christmas on the timeline I don't know if that'd work really.
So, I'll go with probably my favorite song of the year, though I know Neek has heard it and I used it in Ars' contest.
How Simple - Hop Along https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOZx5T1zDf0

12.24.18 | "The Raging River Of Fear"
Wow that's the epitome of a 70s rock riff. Haha nice cowbell. Nothing too unique, but it's still a fun listen. Reminds me of Deep Purple. Hmmm proggy jam section, especially with those vocals. Good enough for me.

12.26.18 | The Curve: 3.3, kinda boring but still some cool sounds
Raging River of Fear: 3.5, more interesting but not quite coherent for me

How Simple: 4.3, i like this album but thought it was overrated for my first few listens. this song makes me want to try again because it rules ahrd |
Metalrain
12.26.18 | She's Quiet: I'm not that much into pop punk and that production is compressed to hell. A little fun, but that's about it. 2.5

Raging River of Fear: Those riffs are solid as hell, fun song. 4.0

Hangover Sq. - Grapetooth {indie rock} My good friend from Ohio recommended me this track last month. It's just a nice, enjoyable, yet relatively unknown track. Kinda reminds me of coasting around in a car for fun. |

12.28.18 | all recs are up! |

12.28.18 | Silver Bullet - Just got up but now I wanna go back to sleep. 2.6
Release - Ouch. I'm not at all cool with the sound on this. Is that a FUCKING TAMBOURINE ON THE BEAT?? That is inecxcusable, sir! 2.4
The Horror - 3
She's Quiet - My main problem with this genre is that every song is so generic. It was spoiled to me when analysts pointed out all pop punk is just slightly up-tempo nursery rhymes. 2.6
The Curve - 4 m/ |
Metalrain
12.29.18 | Love is Political: Those vocals and lyrics are a bit too dramatic for me, but some solid instrumentation on here. 3.3
Overloos: What's the deal with black metal and overlong outro's? This was still pretty great, some solid instrumentation again. 3.5 |
ArsMoriendi
12.30.18 | "How Simple"
I swear, I've heard this before. Was this rec'd to me during the umbrella comp? Her voice is nice enough, and but music is pretty plain, but not boring. Solo gives it personality too.
3.6/5
"Love Is Political"
So far there's bad vocals and the production is loud and annoying, but on the bright side: the bass is easy to focus on, so I can drown the rest of this out. ROOOOOAR THE ANGUISH AND PAIN IN HIS VOCALS AS HE CUTS HIS WRISTS BECAUSE HIS MOM WONT LET HIM STAY OUT PAST CURFEW! ITS NOT JUST A PHASE MOM! But yeah, the bass is fine. WAIT! this is a Zombie rec? I'm so confused, I usually like his recs.
1.8/5

ArsMoriendi
12.30.18 | "Oeverloos"
For fun, I'm gonna compare and contrast this to the last song. For starters the drums are WAY more audible and enjoyable on this one. The vocals are pretty easy to tolerate an may as well be Freddy Mercury's compared to the last one. However, the bass on this one is NOT audible. :( Is it just me or do black metal bands not care for bass? Man, this is a long one though. I bet most people only sample the songs that are over 10 mins, but not me. I listen to 'em from beginning to end. Man, can someone explain to me what's appealing about burped vocals? Clearly people like them, but I'm just "they're burping...that's weird, and not even for comedic effect." This is some SERIOUS burping. Burping his feelings! I think I may need to listen to some nice 70s soul music to erase the burps from my ears. They're talented burps though. Like, I can't burp like that. Burping like that takes practice! Dedicated, serious, emotional, practiced burps to fuzzy loud guitars with inaudible bass. I'm only 5 mins in? FUCK. I'm trying to say all of the positive stuff I can about this so I can trick myself into liking this, but all I got so far is that it's way better than the last song (sorry again Zombie.) I wonder if this guy burns down Churches... that's not cool, even in protest. So, "oeverloos" is apparently Dutch for Untouched. I wonder what this song's about. Clearly SOMETHING is untouched, right? OH wait 8 mins in and we got a slow down structure change oh boy, this are building! Here comes to atmospheric section 9 mins in. Gotta build that up right. Black metal fans eat that shit up, right? Like a cold forest in various shades of gray in the middle of January. Maybe there's a dead moose lying there with no other animals around. Do black metal fans like dead mooses? That'd be kinda weird. This song makes me think of a dead moose in a colorless forest honestly. Maybe there's a log cabin nearby, but it's abandoned. I wonder how that moose died. THE MOOSE CRIES OUT IN AGONY FOR HE IS ACTUALLY NOT DEAD, BUT ONLY SLOWLY DYING AUGHHHHHH. God is not kind to him. Death is not quick. Mercy is nowhere to be found. Song, just let the moose die, It's been 13 mins. Let him go to moose heaven, so he can see his moose wife. That's right, his wife died years ago and she can't wait to see him. The angels gleefully sing as he ascends into the great beyond! He was untouched after death. OH YEAH a tie-in with the song title!
I had a lot of fun typing this up:

12.30.18 | "Sakura"
That 80s synth influence though. Not really much else to say honestly. Being Japanese won't make your post punk any more interesting. Neither does that random 3 seconds of chimes. I had WAY less fun listening to this than Papa's rec, so I'm afraid I'm going to have to give it a lower score.

Sounds like The Smiths. Seriously, this is pretty much just a Smiths song. Maybe with a goofier voice.
2.9/5
"Secret World"
Very 80s so far. The bass is synthy and jittery and kinda meh. The piano is kinda pretty though and his voice is very... heartland rocky honestly. Not the music, but his voice. Like he makes me think of Springsteen or something. The emotion's strong I guess. Not really my thing, but it's well made enough.

12.31.18 | 21. The Horror - Get Well Soon - 3.5
22. She's Quiet - The Home Team - 3 I have such a hard time telling if I like this or not. I've got such a soft spot for pop punk, but it's really hit or miss. And this fits somewhere in between. OH SHIT there's even the acoustic guitar cliche haha. This reminds me of something... maybe early Wonder Years...
23. The Curve - Castevet - 2.9 I thought this was gonna be that one emo band, and I'm a little disappointed. I might not be in the mood for this, but this feels very flat. The guitar is cool, probably the best thing in the song by a mile. The segment from 4:30-7:00 is fantastic really.
24. Raging River of Fear - Captain Beyond - 3.5 I feel like I should be in Yellowstone with my friends getting fucked up listening to this.
25. Christmastime - Smashing Pumpkins - 2.9 I really hate Christmas music, but this wasn't too bad, mostly cause the Smashing Pumpkins rule.
27. Love is Political - Birds in Row - 3.8 This band well and truly rules, I really need to hop on this last album of theirs.
28. Oerverloos - Fluisteraars - 3.7 holy shit this sounds like the guy from Leftover Crack/Choking Victim. The melody of this song is strong. This one may be a bit too long.... I'd like it a bit more if it was ten minutes.
29. Sakurai - Buck Tick - 3.3 This grew on me the longer it went, I liked it. yeah.
31. Secret World - Peter Gabriel - 4.1 Wow, he really does sound Springsteen-esque, which is not a bad thing in the least. The first half is great in itself, and then it transforms into an even better song, I kinda love it. This is great way to end this year's Song of the Day. |

12.31.18 | "Born to Run" was one of my first 5's, def one of my favorites. He's very different music, but it's there in the voice. The music itself is also really great, it makes me wanna check out more of his work.
Also yeah, that is definitely what Oeverloos is. |
