The Umbrella Genre Contest Round 9: Stylish Umbrella

2 more out and only 6 in!
1The Avalanches
Since I Left You

The rules are simple:

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is hip hop! While rapping is in most hip hop, not ALL hip hop needs it. Things like record scratching and creative sampling can also make a song hip hop. Gangsta rap, alternative hip hop, trap, grime, trip hop, instrumental hip hop, plunderphonics, and even hip hop heavy nu-metal all work.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Thursday night, so if you're late, you're out.

***The winner can recommend me whatever album blah blah you know***

Fanfare for the Warriors

“Barnyard Scuffle Shuffle” (SandwichBubble)

Off the bat, this is dissonant as hell. Oh shit that sax is cool. Bass is top tier stuff too. I feel like this is the theme to a dissent into a Greek mythological underworld. Crossing the River Styx or something. A lot of piano banging and sax and trumpet blowing. It shuffles between standard jazz and free jazz or something. Fun song!

4/5 PASSED!
3Sonny Rollins
Our Man in Jazz

“Oleo” (bgillesp)

Ballsy move picking a song over 25 mins! Here’s to hoping I don’t get bore! The jazz is exciting enough and the drums remind me of a rush of hair. The bass is going at it, but I can’t help, but wish it was mixed higher. Research told me that the original version is only 5 mins, but you chose the 25 mins one anyway, damn. 6 mins in and it’s been a jam so far. Not many changes so far though, it’s just powerful force. 16 mins in and this drum changes things up in an interesting way. Man this is LONG. See, the thing is, I like the general idea of this, but in practice it’s just so drawn out. I feel like I’d appreciate this far more live in concert. Or maybe if I was at a jazz party. This is NOT sit down music, right?

3.7/5 PASSED!

“Theme for the Eulipions” (Minushuman24)

Harmonica jazz? Ooh that piano is pretty and that lady’s voice is cool as hell. Good bass again and the sax is exactly as I’d expect it in a 70s jazz jam, but the piano and drums are standing out in a extra nice way. Those soulful vocals are my favorite part actually. I like soul. I need to get into more soul. The vocals really give this so much personality oh my god.

4.2/5 PASSED!
5Bill Wells
Lemonade

“Lemondale” (Pheromone)

Jazz pop with pretty vocals of some sort of accent? Also Sputnik put the title wrong as “Lemonade” haha. It’s straightforward and piano focused, but charming. I do like the weird squeaking in the back.

3.6/5 FAILED!
6Nina Simone
Nina Simone at Town Hall

“Wild Is The Wind” (ZombieToyDuck)

You don’t know what you just did. “Wild Is the Wind” is my FAVORITE David Bowie song, his version of it is so damn passionate, and wow Nina’s renition is awesome too. Her voice is so deep and pained. The piano is simple, but aids her voice in the best way. The bass and drums are kinda plain, but who cares? All of the focus is rightfully on her voice. I think I still prefer Bowie’s, but Simone’s vocal power is undeniable.

4.1/5 PASSED!
7Bohren & Der Club Of Gore
Black Earth

“Constant Fear” (Grimlin)

This is very dreamy sounding so far. Simple and creepy, like it belongs in a desolate wasteland. And the bass is mixed well! I won’t lie though, this makes me think of the loading screen to a video game. Maybe also to a DVD menu. This was okay…

3.2/5 + 0.5 = 3.7/5 PASSED!
8David Sylvian
Dead Bees on a Cake

“I Surrender” (RikRoach7)

Electronic jazzy stuff hmmm. Feels like the term “adult contemporary” would fit well here. Pretty flute part though! It’s got a bit of a funk guitar in it too. The organ is nice enough too. Electric piano works well here, though I’ll be honest, this isn't really my thing. Also the fact that the trumpet seems to have replace the flute is kind of disappointing.

3/5 FAILED!
9Last Exit
Last Exit

“Crackin'” (NeroCorleone80)

So far this is just bass wankery, but I like it. Holy fuck he’s playing that bass in a way I’ve never heard before, what is going on??? Wait there’s the sax and it’s screaming. This is so crazy that it makes Naked City look like Miley Cyrus. You could torture war prisoners with this, but you can’t torture me with it!

4.8/5 ROUND WINNER! (handicap of +0.5 next round!)
