The Umbrella Genre Contest Round 7: Straw Umbrella

2 are out and 10 are in.
1Ween
12 Golden Country Greats

The rules are simple:

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is ja....COUNTRY! Everything from traditional country and western, to bluegrass, to country pop to americana. Even southern rock, cowpunk, and rockabilly should be fine.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Thursday night, so if you're late, you're out.

***The winner can recommend me whatever album blah blah you know***

“Final Escape” (bgillesp)

The rattly intro is kinda cool and I always appreciate cello. Why does it sound like she’s singing with something in her mouth though? This is so minimalist. If you know my taste, minimalism isn’t a common thing that’s seen in my taste. This is okay trip hop, but I’ve heard far better in the genre.

3.4/5 PASSED!
3David Sylvian
A Victim of Stars

“Bamboo Music” (Frippertronics)

Hmmm post punk electronic. It’s like a more emotional Gary Numan. I love Gary Numan… well at least the 2 albums I’ve heard by him/Tubeway Army. I was about to say this got boring, but then it jingled into randomness hmmm. This is kinda of cheesy actually and i’m not sure if it’s in a fun way. This was fine, the jingles made this interesting enough. Also, I don’t think the album is in Sput’s database, so I picked a compilation by Sylvian for the picture.

3.2/5 PASSED!

L'Espionne Aimait La Musique

“Mercenaire Solitaire” (SandwichBubble)

This one is very catchy and I like the chorus. You guys are really going for the poppy stuff hmmm. This was okay as a whole… good chorus as I said earlier.

3.2/5 PASSED!
5Susumu Hirasawa
Kyuusai no Gihou

“Banshou no ki Yoru - Strange Night of the Omnifence” (RikRoach7)

I like the beat. It sounds kind of backmasked and the strings sound oddly futuristic. Plus that raga influence is really neat too actually. Good drums actually also. I feel like this would make for a great soundtrack.

3.6/5 PASSED!

EP02

“Beta” (ZombieToyDuck)

Oh man this is building up. Is it gonna drop? Here we go! Wait that drop was barely there haha. Man this percussion is kinda weak. Zombie, you’ve been doing so well in this competition, but wow you’re really striking out this time. Man this is really annoying actually. Sorry man.

2.3/5 PASSED!
7Luciano Berio
Sinfonia

“Chants Parallèles” (AlexanderMR)

Well this is bizarre warbling so far. This is like a dark futuristic hell. The Jetsons have been slaughtered brutally. Even little Elroy. Torn apart by mindless uncaring turquoise blobs from across the galaxy. It serious sounds so uncaring and alien, like a transmission from outer space. This reminds me a far less poppy version of the album I Hear a New World by Joe Meek, a landmark 1960s electronic album I like. Uh oh, that beeping is kind of giving me a headache. 10 mins in and my headache when away and now all I can think of a cockroaches when I hear this. I’m not giving you a crazy high score because this is drawn out as fuck and I will admit my patience is being tried hearing this, but it’s creative, original, and made me think of a bunch of interesting scenarios, so that means it’s at least good, y’know? Okay, now it’s just floated off into ambient space…

3.5/5 PASSED!

For Lack of a Better Name

“Strobe” (Sinternet)

So far it has a soothing piano. So, as you may have guessed, I’m not much for clubbing and this song is boring the fuck out of me honestly. Yeah I got nothing out of this, sorry man.

2/5 FAILED!
9Brian Eno
Another Green World

“The Big Ship” (Minushuman24)

Another slow opening that feels like a long buildup. Ooh it’s just an ambient piece. Not a bad one though! And it didn’t overstay its welcome.

3.4/5 PASSED!
10Legowelt
Teen Romance

“Teen Romance” (NeroCorleone80)

I feel like I’m listening to an angry duck sing over a generic club beat, but it’s lo-fi. The airy synths give it a little more personality, but I can’t help, but think this was made on GarageBand or something. Man you guys are picking a lot of super repetitive stuff. I know a lot of electronic stuff (especially th dance music) is repetitive, but I was kind of hoping people would pick the stuff that isn’t anyway haha. This song makes me think of springs for some reason. It’s growing on me. Hmmm there’s actually a decent amount of variation here actually now hmmmm.

3.3/5 +0.5 = 3.8 PASSED!

Hurry Up, We're Dreaming

“Wait” (neekafat)

So far this sounds like indie folk. The orchestral strings are nice, but I’m not sure what’s electronic about this at all. I guess there’s a synth in the background? Maybe? Neeka why do you keep picking things that barely count. Like it said in the instructions “don't pick something that's 90% guitar and drum set driven with a synth section hidden in the back, let the electronic elements be loud and clear.“ Can you even argue that this is the case here? I’m taking another penalty point and now I feel mean, but you gotta follow the instructions. Everyone else did. Also song’s fine.

3.2-1=2.2 FAILED!

“Teach Me How To Fight” (Pheromone)

Interesting percussion. I’m not too big on these vocals though. This is very peaceful sounding. As was most of the stuff rec’d this round. The percussion makes this.

3.3/5 PASSED!

Hologram_ ‎– Geometrical Keys
“Holy Haunted Box” (Grimlin)

Oh this song is about to get wild. This is engaging and high energy. It really stands out among the others in a good way. As did Alexander’s, but this one somehow does even more. I could actually probably rave to this. It sounds like it belongs at an industrial club or something haha. And THOSE are the best strings this round too what the hell? Grimlin, you’re full of surprises somehow. This just went from scary kid dance club to epic movie climax. Someone put this in a horror movie haha.

4.1/5 (ROUND WINNER!) (handicap of +0.5 next round)
