The Umbrella Genre Contest Round 6: Umbrella.jpg

2 more are out and 12 are still in!
1The Knife
Silent Shout

The rules are simple:

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is electronic. Synth pop, techno, house, trip hop, and even ambient! If it's electronic at all it works, even if it's fused with a more organic sounding genre. Okay, like don't pick something that's 90% guitar and drum set driven with a synth section hidden in the back, let the electronic elements be loud and clear.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Thursday night, so if you're late, you're out.

***The winner can recommend me whatever album blah blah you know***
2Johannes Brahms
Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98

“Movement 3” (bgillesp)

I actually know this one, but it’s hard to tell by titles. WAIT NO, I KNOW THIS BECAUSE IT’S COVERED ON YES’S ALBUM FRAGILE. I already like Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No.5. There’s so much life to his music It’s exciting and varies. Off to a good start.

4.2/5 PASSED!
37 Angels 7 Plagues
Jhazmyne's Lullaby

"Jhazmyne's Lullaby” (JustJoe.)

A simple piano solo. It’s pretty, but kind of boring. Not my thing at all. It makes me think of the pian to R.E.M.’s song “Nightswimming” though which is a fantastic song. Maybe if someone sang over it...

2.7/5 FAILED!
4Clint Mansell
Requiem for a Tower

Death is the road to Awe (Minushuman24)

This one seems like it’s the soundtrack to a depressive episode. It also reminds me of that song from Requiem for a Dream, which he also wrote. Hmmm. Album isn’t in Sput’s Database, so I’m using one of his that is. I was pretty entertained by it for the first 4 mins, but it’s kind of getting repetitive. Maybe I just have a short attention span though. The drums caught my attention at the end though!

3.2/5 PASSED!
5The English Concert
Handel: Water Music

“Ouverture (Largo - Allegro)” (SandwichBubble)

Sandwich, you rec’d an entire 31m in symphony when the instructions clearly stated to only do 1 movement, so I’m only listening to the 3 min overture. With that said, this overture is elegant, vibrant, and cheerful. I like the violins, clarinet and harpsichord exchanges with one another.

4/5 PASSED!
6Gottfried Huppertz
Metropolis, Op. 29

"Prelude: Freder and Maria" (Frippertronics)

Pretty relaxing so far, but far from boring. It’s so cinematic sounding like the opening credits to a film. Is this from the movie Metropolis? I once saw that one on a sorta date (sorta date because I was not into the guy at all.) It was amazing for its time. Scary to know that Adolf Hitler adored that film and found inspiration in it. Ominous and effective abrupt ending geez.

3.6/5 PASSED!
7Hans Zimmer
The Prince of Egypt

"The Burning Bush" (neekafat)

Aw, I used to watch this movie all of the time as a kid. This one also seems like an epic part of the movie, but not the intro. If it’s based on the burning bush scene, I guess that it’s toward the beginning of the film since that’s before the plagues happened. It invokes a talk with God I guess. The angelic choral vocals really sell that idea too. Well made stuff.

3.7/5 PASSED!
8Kevin Penkin
Made In Abyss Original Soundtrack

“Tomorrow” (Aberf)

This feels like a march hmmm. It feels kind of gaudy for some reason. Something about this rubs me the wrong way. The vocals are okay. This ominous ending the the horns and strings is the best part and makes me like it more. This is kind of a mess, but i don’t hate it.

2.8/5 FAILED!
9Zelda Reorchestrated
Four Swords Adventures

“Frozen Hyrule” (ZombieToyDuck)

I swear I’ve heard this in Smash Bros. It’s so full of life and the pan flute allows it to stick out among other choices. This makes me hyped for the next Smash haha. Piranha Plant here I come!

4/5+0.5= 4.5 PASSED!
10Claude Debussy
Jeux, L. 126

“Jeux” (AlexanderMR)
Ooh that cello sounds downright sinister. An that xylophone! Is this a villain theme? Who’s mother is about to get murdered? Bambi’s? Those violins are so jarring in a really cool way too. It calmed, but something still seems off, like it’s the eye of the hurricane and things are about to get crazy again. Risky picking such a long one, but this hasn’t bored me yet! Seriously, why does this keep reminding me of Bambi! And damn it just got so happy! What a mood change hmmm.

4.1/5 PASSED!
11Masakatsu Takagi
Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki OST

“Oyoste Aina” (Sinternet)

This feels like a little kid’s song for some reason. One you’d sing in elementary school in Japan or something. The piano is playful, but I don’t love this.

3/5 PASSED!
12Steve Reich
Pulse/Quartet

“Pulses” (Pheromone)

Only listening to the first one as the rules state. This makes me think of a Pink Floyd song minus the rock elements. Specifically “One of These Days” from Meddle. It also makes me think of spinning around in a living room. It’s unique to say the least.

3.3/5 PASSED!
13Iannis Xenakis
Metastaseis

“Metastasis” (NeroCorleone80)

This crescendo is making my back tense up in a painful way. I’m not even kidding; what the fuck? The calm section is just as jarring as the loud section, hmmm. I looked it up and this is considered to be musique concrete. The only musique concrete I know is Zappa’s dabblings in it (of course.) Man this is like Hitchcock horror soundtrack stuff. Are you sure Bernard Hermann didn’t write this? This is hands down the craziest one so far, and I mean that in a good way, but wow I need a massage after hearing this back tensing nightmare! And it ends with a bee swarm sound… interesting!

4.6/5 ROUND WINNER! (handicap of +0.5 next round)
14Kanno Yoshihiro
Tenshi no Tamago OST

“Tensi no Tamago Main Theme” (RikRoach7)

Soothing Baroque styled stuff. This is like the antithesis to Nero’s choice haha. I feel like I want to elegant dance to this at a ball.

3.5/5 PASSED!
15Sigh
Scenario IV: Dread Dreams

“Waltz Dread Dreams” (Grimlin)

Yup, this is short, sweet and regal. Not much else to say, but I do like the violins. The abrupt ending is a little odd though and unfitting.

3/5 PASSED!
